Made in Toledo, this cleverly designed stem can be flipped or rotated to provide four different bar height positions. An interesting side note of this stem is that it was standard equipment on Hearsey Special bicycles of Indianapolis. The founder of Hearsey Bicycles, H. T. Hearsey was the individual who entered Major Taylor in his first race in 1893 from Indianapolis to Matthews.

A cutinized epidermis overlays a two-layer cortex consisting of an outer zone of thick walled collenchyma and an inner zone of loosely packed parenchyma cells. During the first year of growth the underlying activity of the cork cambium begins to replace the epidermis and outer cortical tissues with a protective layer of cork rich periderm. Many cells in the periderm contain dark staining tannins.

 

Primary growth results in a ring of discrete vascular bundles that divides the parenchymatous cortex and pith. Xylem of each bundle is oriented towards the center of the stem and the phloem to the outside, with fascicular cambium in between. Phloem is heavily capped with sclerenchyma cells and sided by medullary parenchyma.

 

Due to meristematic activity the vascular bundles expand to form a cylinder consisting of a narrow outer ring of primary phloem, a middle single layered ring of vascular cambium and a deeper large ring of primary xylem. The phloem becomes overlaid by heavy continuous ring of sclerenchyma.

 

Bulging into the pith are small masses of the first xylem consisting of small protoxylem cells overlaid by a few larger, heavier walled cells of metaxylem. Above this and extending to the cambium are columns of primary xylem divided by narrow rays, extending from the large parenchymatous pith to the phloem.

The event aimed to reinvigorate, inspire and engage high school girls who may be struggling with, or are not fully engaged in, STEM education.

 

Activities included competitions and challenges, a telescope stargazing party, a scavenger hunt, speed networking, movie night and more.

In an era when the workplace is shifting toward the promise of innovation and creativity for future generations, diversity must be a critical component of success. Nowhere is this more vital than in STEM fields, where women are still underrepresented.

 

The event featured STEM leaders who have demonstrated success in creating environments that encourage and advance women in STEM careers. The day included dynamic morning presentations, enlightening panel discussions, candid question-and-answer dialogues and afternoon breakout sessions.

Middle and high school girls from across Albuquerque visited the museum to learn about STEM from Sandia scientists and engineers. The event coincided with Museum Day Live! and Women's History Month.

In this young hollow stem of a buttercup (Ranunculus sp.), a dicot, the conducting tissue is contained within separate vascular bundles, forming a peripheral ring around the stem.

 

Most of the tissue of the stem consists of thin-walled packing cells called parenchyma. Between the vascular bundles and the outer epidermis is a region known as the cortex. Here the parenchyma cells are relatively small and contain chloroplasts for photosynthesis. Inside the ring formed by the vascular bundles, the parenchyma consists of larger cells. This region is called the pith. In many plants, like this specimen, the pith is hollow

 

Cells of the parenchyma support the stem by their turgidity. In older stems the support role is achieved by growth of new tissues, in a process called secondary thickening.

 

The diameter of the largest xylem vessel is about 30 µm.

Using the main stem piece as a template to shape the 2 doublers. A pattern routing bit (with a bearing) is used.

 

Having gone to all this trouble, consider now whether you want to make an outer stem to cover the ends of your boards. If you do it is good to prepare for the making of the pattern now while you have the stem available to trace from easily. It is more simple to mold the curves of the stem on a bench than on the boat in my opinion, so I traced the outline of this piece onto some stout ply, and this will eventually support the mold pieces for the lamination of outer stem layers. Put the piece of ply away carefully and don't let anyone tidy it up because it may be months before you get around to making the outer stem.
