The island of Sicily is a land that you never stop discovering, rich in natural treasures, artistic works, artifacts that are the fruit of human ingenuity, in its historical and cultural panorama it is the popular traditions that represent an unparalleled "eco living, static and dynamic at the same time "that exist (and persist) becoming visible, only when it is the people themselves who decide to give voice to them, traditions whose roots sink into a dark and distant past made up of stratified cultures between them, very often synonymous with wars and dominations, to throw ever green leaves in the present: this as a preamble to what I am going to describe in words and photographs, of the traditional folk festival of the "Maiorchino tournament", unique in its kind, which is is held this year in the Sicilian town of Novara di Sicilia. This ancient medieval center is an ancient village located in the province of Messina, whose name seems to come from a transformation of the ancient Latin name Noa into the Arabic language Nouah, which means "flower garden", to indicate the beauty of this territory, so appreciated by the Arabs when they settled here. The “Maiorchino Tournament” is a game that was once very popular in the province of Messina (Sicily) in the areas of the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, but which today survives exclusively in the town of Novara di Sicilia; the game-competition, complete with cheering towards the various teams, takes place during the Carnival period, it is a team competition (each team consists of three players, both men and women), which consists in throwing a heavy circular shape the precious Novara di Sicilia cheese called “Maiorchino” (cheese made with sheep's and goat's milk, whose weight varies between 10 and 12 kg); to throw the heavy cheese the players use a rope that is wound (as if it were a yo-yo) along the circumference of the cheese, a rope that is previously treated with pitch, to make it more "sticky" when it is unrolled during the launch; the route is downhill and is in stages, the total length of which is about one kilometer; to complete the entire course each team will have to do a lot of throws, the team that completes the entire course with fewer throws as possible wins. The photographs of the tournament, both for men and women, I took on Shrove Tuesday this year 2022, while the last two past editions were not taken due to the covid-19 pandemic.

L’isola di Sicilia è una terra che non si finisce mai di scoprire, ricchissima di tesori naturali, di opere artistiche, di manufatti frutto dell’ingegno umano, nel suo panorama storico e culturale sono le tradizioni popolari quelle che rappresentano una ineguagliabile “eco vivente, statica e dinamica al tempo stesso” che esistono (e persistono) divenendo visibili, solo nel momento in cui è il popolo stesso che decide di dare voce ad esse, tradizioni le cui radici sprofondano in un oscuro e lontano passato fatto di culture stratificate tra loro, molto spesso sinonimo di guerre e dominazioni, per gettare foglie sempre verdi nel presente: questo come preambolo di quanto vado a descrivere in parole e fotografie, della tradizionale festa popolare del “torneo del Maiorchino”, unica nel suo genere, che si è tenuto quest’anno nel paese siciliano di Novara di Sicilia. Questo antico centro medioevale è un antico borgo situato in provincia di Messina, Il cui nome sembrerebbe provenire da una trasformazione dell’antico nome latino Noa nella lingua araba Nouah, che significa “giardino fiorito”, ad indicare la bellezza di questo territorio, così apprezzato dagli Arabi quando qui si insediarono. Il “Torneo del Maiorchino”, è un gioco in passato molto diffuso in provincia di Messina nelle zone dei monti Nebrodi e dei monti Peloritani, ma che oggi sopravvive esclusivamente a Novara di Sicilia; il gioco-competizione, con tanto di tifo verso le varie squadre, si svolge durante il periodo di Carnevale, è una gara a squadre (ogni squadra è composta da tre giocatori, sia uomini che donne), che consiste nel lanciare una pesante forma circolare del pregiato formaggio di Novara di Sicilia chiamato “Maiorchino” (formaggio realizzato con latte di pecora e di capra, il cui peso varia tra i 10 ed i 12 Kg); per lanciare il pesante formaggio ci si avvale di una corda che viene avvolta (come se fosse uno di yo-yo) lungo La circonferenza del formaggio, corda che viene precedentemente trattata con della pece, per renderla più “adesiva” quando verrà srotolata durante il lancio; il percorso è in discesa ed è a tappe, la cui lunghezza totale è di circa un chilometro; per completare l’intero percorso ogni squadra dovrà fare molto lanci, vince la squadra che completerà l’intero percorso con meno lanci possibili. Le fotografie del torneo, sia maschile che femminile, le ho realizzate il giorno di martedì grasso di quest’anno 2022, mentre le due ultime passate edizioni non state realizzate a causa della pandemia da covid-19.

Le note sul foglio trattano di temi variegati: geometria, teoria della pittura e, soprattutto, problemi di statica. A questo tema sembra riferito il disegno anatomico di una gamba maschile sul foglio di destra. Leonardo la raffigura infatti con un sistema pilanciato di pesi, contrappesi, snodi e giunture.

The notes on the sheet deal with variegated themes: geometry, theory of painting and, above all, problems of static. The anatomical drawing of a male leg on the right-hand sheet seems to refer to this subject. Leonardo in fact depicts it with a piloted system of weights, counterweights and joints.

Il Codice Atlantico

Il Codice Atlantico è la più vasta raccolta al mondo di disegni e scritti autografi di Leonardo da Vinci ed è conservato sin dal 1637 presso la Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana di Milano, una delle prime biblioteche al mondo aperte al pubblico.

Esso è composto da 1119 fogli che abbracciano la vita intellettuale di Leonardo per un periodo di oltre quarant’anni – dal 1478 al 1519 – spaziando tra i temi più disparati: da schizzi e disegni preparatori per opere pittoriche a ricerche di matematica, astronomia e ottica, da meditazioni filosofiche a favole e ricette gastronomiche, fino a curiosi e avveniristici progetti di marchingegni come pompe idrauliche, paracadute e macchine da guerra.

Codex Atlanticus

The Codex Atlanticus consists of 1119 sheets and was donated in 1637 to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1609 and one of the first public libraries in the world. Basically Leonardo’s entire life as an artist and a scientist appears in this extraordinary collection, which covers a time frame that goes from 1478, when Leonardo was still working in his native Tuscany, to 1519, when he died in France. The folios deal with various subjects ranging from mechanics to hydraulics, from studies and sketches for paintings to mathematics and astronomy, from philosophical meditations to fables, all the way to curious inventions such as parachutes, war machineries and hydraulic pumps.

Nel luglio del 1501 Michelangelo Buonarroti fu richiamato a Firenze per una commissione dell’Opera del Duomo. Gli fu proposto di lavorare ad una statua di proporzioni grandiose per realizzare un David, con il vincolo di scolpirlo da un grande blocco di marmo che giaceva abbandonato presso il cortile dell’Opera del Duomo. Questo blocco di marmo bianco di Carrara era già stato affidato a due scultori, Agostino di Duccio nel 1464 e ad Antonio Rossellino nel 1475, ma abbandonato a causa dei “taroli”, numerose imperfezioni del materiale, che avrebbero rischiato di compromettere la statica di un’opera di dimensioni eccezionali. La collocazione del David era inizialmente prevista per uno dei contrafforti della Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, a circa 80 metri d’altezza.

Michelangelo aveva solo 26 anni, ma era già diventato il più famoso e ben pagato artista dell’epoca grazie alla struggente bellezza scolpita nella Pietà del Vaticano. Accettò la sfida nel 1501 e fino al 1504 lavorò incessantemente alla realizzazione del David, come testimoniato dai documenti sui regolari pagamenti ricevuti dall’Opera. Michelangelo affrontò con entusiasmo la commissione, lavorando senza aiuti, spesso vestendo gli stessi panni e stivali per giorni, sempre nascosto dietro una fitta impalcatura di legno per impedire a chiunque di vedere l’opera prima della completa conclusione.

This astonishing Renaissance sculpture was created between 1501 and 1504. It is a 14.0 ft marble statue depicting the Biblical hero David, represented as a standing male nude. Originally commissioned by the Opera del Duomo for the Cathedral of Florence, it was meant to be one of a series of large statues to be positioned in the niches of the cathedral’s tribunes, way up at about 80mt from the ground. Michelangelo was asked by the consuls of the Board to complete an unfinished project begun in 1464 by Agostino di Duccio and later carried on by Antonio Rossellino in 1475. Both sculptors had in the end rejected an enormous block of marble due to the presence of too many “taroli”, or imperfections, which may have threatened the stability of such a huge statue. Il “Torneo del Maiorchino”, è un gioco in passato molto diffuso in provincia di Messina nelle zone dei monti Nebrodi e dei monti Peloritani, ma che oggi sopravvive esclusivamente a Novara di Sicilia; il gioco-competizione, con tanto di tifo verso le varie squadre, si svolge durante il periodo di Carnevale, è una gara a squadre (ogni squadra è composta da tre giocatori, sia uomini che donne), che consiste nel lanciare una pesante forma circolare del pregiato formaggio di Novara di Sicilia chiamato “Maiorchino” (formaggio realizzato con latte di pecora e di capra, il cui peso varia tra i 10 ed i 12 Kg); per lanciare il pesante formaggio ci si avvale di una corda che viene avvolta (come se fosse uno di yo-yo) lungo La circonferenza del formaggio, corda che viene precedentemente trattata con della pece, per renderla più “adesiva” quando verrà srotolata durante il lancio; il percorso è in discesa ed è a tappe, la cui lunghezza totale è di circa un chilometro; per completare l’intero percorso ogni squadra dovrà fare molto lanci, vince la squadra che completerà l’intero percorso con meno lanci possibili. This ancient medieval center is an ancient village located in the province of Messina, whose name seems to come from a transformation of the ancient Latin name Noa into the Arabic language Nouah, which means "flower garden", to indicate the beauty of this territory, so appreciated by the Arabs when they settled here. Bernini riprese un mito biblico già trattato da Donatello, Michelangelo Buonarroti e Andrea Verrocchio. I David del Rinascimento trattano i momenti successivi alla morte di Golia, rappresentando così un eroe meditativo, rilassato e soddisfatto del successo dell'impresa; al contrario, Bernini prende le distanze dall'iconografia tradizionale scegliendo di dipingere David nell'istante che precede il lancio della pietra contro Golia.

Il movimento circolare implicito nella tensione del David di Gian Lorenzo Bernini attira lo spettatore nella sua orbita, invitandolo a muoversi intorno alla scultura. interessante il contrasto con la calma statica del David di Battistello appeso al muro.

The island of Sicily is a land that you never stop discovering, rich in natural treasures, artistic works, artifacts that are the fruit of human ingenuity, in its historical and cultural panorama it is the popular traditions that represent an unparalleled "eco living, static and dynamic at the same time "that exist (and persist) becoming visible, only when it is the people themselves who decide to give voice to them, traditions whose roots sink into a dark and distant past made up of stratified cultures between them, very often synonymous with wars and dominations, to throw ever green leaves in the present: this as a preamble to what I am going to describe in words and photographs, of the traditional folk festival of the "Maiorchino tournament", unique in its kind, which is is held this year in the Sicilian town of Novara di Sicilia. This ancient medieval center is an ancient village located in the province of Messina, whose name seems to come from a transformation of the ancient Latin name Noa into the Arabic language Nouah, which means "flower garden", to indicate the beauty of this territory, so appreciated by the Arabs when they settled here. The “Maiorchino Tournament” is a game that was once very popular in the province of Messina (Sicily) in the areas of the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, but which today survives exclusively in the town of Novara di Sicilia; the game-competition, complete with cheering towards the various teams, takes place during the Carnival period, it is a team competition (each team consists of three players, both men and women), which consists in throwing a heavy circular shape the precious Novara di Sicilia cheese called “Maiorchino” (cheese made with sheep's and goat's milk, whose weight varies between 10 and 12 kg); to throw the heavy cheese the players use a rope that is wound (as if it were a yo-yo) along the circumference of the cheese, a rope that is previously treated with pitch, to make it more "sticky" when it is unrolled during the launch; the route is downhill and is in stages, the total length of which is about one kilometer; to complete the entire course each team will have to do a lot of throws, the team that completes the entire course with fewer throws as possible wins. The photographs of the tournament, both for men and women, I took on Shrove Tuesday this year 2022, while the last two past editions were not taken due to the covid-19 pandemic.

L’isola di Sicilia è una terra che non si finisce mai di scoprire, ricchissima di tesori naturali, di opere artistiche, di manufatti frutto dell’ingegno umano, nel suo panorama storico e culturale sono le tradizioni popolari quelle che rappresentano una ineguagliabile “eco vivente, statica e dinamica al tempo stesso” che esistono (e persistono) divenendo visibili, solo nel momento in cui è il popolo stesso che decide di dare voce ad esse, tradizioni le cui radici sprofondano in un oscuro e lontano passato fatto di culture stratificate tra loro, molto spesso sinonimo di guerre e dominazioni, per gettare foglie sempre verdi nel presente: questo come preambolo di quanto vado a descrivere in parole e fotografie, della tradizionale festa popolare del “torneo del Maiorchino”, unica nel suo genere, che si è tenuto quest’anno nel paese siciliano di Novara di Sicilia. Questo antico centro medioevale è un antico borgo situato in provincia di Messina, Il cui nome sembrerebbe provenire da una trasformazione dell’antico nome latino Noa nella lingua araba Nouah, che significa “giardino fiorito”, ad indicare la bellezza di questo territorio, così apprezzato dagli Arabi quando qui si insediarono. Il “Torneo del Maiorchino”, è un gioco in passato molto diffuso in provincia di Messina nelle zone dei monti Nebrodi e dei monti Peloritani, ma che oggi sopravvive esclusivamente a Novara di Sicilia; il gioco-competizione, con tanto di tifo verso le varie squadre, si svolge durante il periodo di Carnevale, è una gara a squadre (ogni squadra è composta da tre giocatori, sia uomini che donne), che consiste nel lanciare una pesante forma circolare del pregiato formaggio di Novara di Sicilia chiamato “Maiorchino” (formaggio realizzato con latte di pecora e di capra, il cui peso varia tra i 10 ed i 12 Kg); per lanciare il pesante formaggio ci si avvale di una corda che viene avvolta (come se fosse uno di yo-yo) lungo La circonferenza del formaggio, corda che viene precedentemente trattata con della pece, per renderla più “adesiva” quando verrà srotolata durante il lancio; il percorso è in discesa ed è a tappe, la cui lunghezza totale è di circa un chilometro; per completare l’intero percorso ogni squadra dovrà fare molto lanci, vince la squadra che completerà l’intero percorso con meno lanci possibili. Le fotografie del torneo, sia maschile che femminile, le ho realizzate il giorno di martedì grasso di quest’anno 2022, mentre le due ultime passate edizioni non state realizzate a causa della pandemia da covid-19.

Michelangelo Buonarroti (Caprese, 6 March 1475 - Rome, 18 February 1564) - David (1501-1504) (in Piazza della Signoria there is a copy) - Carrara marble size 517×199 cm - Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence

Nel luglio del 1501 Michelangelo Buonarroti fu richiamato a Firenze per una commissione dell’Opera del Duomo. Gli fu proposto di lavorare ad una statua di proporzioni grandiose per realizzare un David, con il vincolo di scolpirlo da un grande blocco di marmo che giaceva abbandonato presso il cortile dell’Opera del Duomo. Questo blocco di marmo bianco di Carrara era già stato affidato a due scultori, Agostino di Duccio nel 1464 e ad Antonio Rossellino nel 1475, ma abbandonato a causa dei “taroli”, numerose imperfezioni del materiale, che avrebbero rischiato di compromettere la statica di un’opera di dimensioni eccezionali. La collocazione del David era inizialmente prevista per uno dei contrafforti della Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, a circa 80 metri d’altezza.

Michelangelo aveva solo 26 anni, ma era già diventato il più famoso e ben pagato artista dell’epoca grazie alla struggente bellezza scolpita nella Pietà del Vaticano. Accettò la sfida nel 1501 e fino al 1504 lavorò incessantemente alla realizzazione del David, come testimoniato dai documenti sui regolari pagamenti ricevuti dall’Opera. Michelangelo affrontò con entusiasmo la commissione, lavorando senza aiuti, spesso vestendo gli stessi panni e stivali per giorni, sempre nascosto dietro una fitta impalcatura di legno per impedire a chiunque di vedere l’opera prima della completa conclusione.

This astonishing Renaissance sculpture was created between 1501 and 1504. It is a 14.0 ft marble statue depicting the Biblical hero David, represented as a standing male nude. Originally commissioned by the Opera del Duomo for the Cathedral of Florence, it was meant to be one of a series of large statues to be positioned in the niches of the cathedral’s tribunes, way up at about 80mt from the ground. Michelangelo was asked by the consuls of the Board to complete an unfinished project begun in 1464 by Agostino di Duccio and later carried on by Antonio Rossellino in 1475. Both sculptors had in the end rejected an enormous block of marble due to the presence of too many “taroli”, or imperfections, which may have threatened the stability of such a huge statue. This block of marble of exceptional dimensions remained therefore neglected for 25 years, lying within the courtyard of the Opera del Duomo (Vestry Board).

Michelangelo was only 26 years old in 1501, but he was already the most famous and best paid artist in his days. He accepted the challenge with enthusiasm to sculpt a large scale David and worked constantly for over two years to create one of his most breathtaking masterpieces of gleaming white marble.

The Vestry Board had established the religious subject for the statue, but nobody expected such a revolutionary interpretation of the biblical hero.

Bernini riprese un mito biblico già trattato da Donatello, Michelangelo Buonarroti e Andrea Verrocchio. I David del Rinascimento trattano i momenti successivi alla morte di Golia, rappresentando così un eroe meditativo, rilassato e soddisfatto del successo dell'impresa; al contrario, Bernini prende le distanze dall'iconografia tradizionale scegliendo di dipingere David nell'istante che precede il lancio della pietra contro Golia.

Il movimento circolare implicito nella tensione del David di Gian Lorenzo Bernini attira lo spettatore nella sua orbita, invitandolo a muoversi intorno alla scultura. interessante il contrasto con la calma statica del David di Battistello appeso al muro.

Bernini resumed a biblical myth already treated by Donatello, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Andrea Verrocchio. The Renaissance David deal with the moments following the death of Goliath, thus portraying a meditative hero, relaxed and satisfied with the success of the enterprise; on the contrary, Bernini distances himself from traditional iconography by choosing to depict David in the instant preceding the stone's throw against Goliath.

The circular movment implicit in the tension of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's David draws spectator into his orbit, inviting them to move round the sculpture. Interesting contrast with the static calm of Battistello's David hanging on the wall.

A fine 2022 un elettrotreno Class 555 costruito in Svizzera da Stadler per la società Tyne and Wear Metro, che opera nei pressi di Manchester, ha raggiunto la stazione di Arth-Goldau. Su una sezione di binario della Rigi Bahn, normalmente utilizzata come deposito, si sono svolti test di messa in esercizio statica. La ferrovia del Rigi con la sua corrente di 1500V è infatti l’unica rete dove i treni hanno potuto venir testati, seppur non abbiano naturalmente affrontato le pendenze di 250‰ che portano alla montagna della Svizzera Centrale. All’imbrunire dell’8 dicembre il personale di Stadler si trovava a bordo ed effettuava diverse prove, dando modo di osservare il treno pienamente inserito ed a pantografo alzato.

Ende 2022 erreichte ein von Stadler in der Schweiz gebauter Triebzug der Baureihe 555 für die in der Umgebung von Manchester tätige Tyne and Wear Metro den Bahnhof Arth-Goldau. Auf einem Gleisabschnitt der Rigi Bahn, der normalerweise als Abstellgleis genutzt wird, wurde die statische Inbetriebnahme durchgeführt. Die Rigi-Bahn mit ihrem 1500-V-Strom ist in der Tat das einzige Netz, auf dem die Züge getestet werden konnten, obwohl sie natürlich nicht die 250-‰-Steigungen zum Berg in der Zentralschweiz bewältigten. Bei Einbruch der Dunkelheit am 8. Dezember waren Mitarbeiter von Stadler an Bord und führten verschiedene Tests durch, bei denen der Zug mit gehobenen Stromabnehmer beobachtet werden konnte.

In una serena e calibrata architettura rinascimentale san Bernardo di Chiaravalle, dedito allo studio di un libro posto su un leggio raffinatamente intagliato, riceve l'apparizione della Vergine, che si rivolge a lui indicando il libro. Ai lati si trovano due gruppi simmetrici, con una coppia di angeli a sinistra e un angelo e un santo a destra, forse un evangelista.

Le strutture architettoniche sono semplici e robuste, con un padiglione di archi a tutto sesto retti da pilastri squadrati con capitelli molto aggettanti, centrati perfettamente in prospettiva. Si tratta dello sfondo a portico tipico delle opere dell'artista degli ultimi due decenni del XV secolo.

I personaggi sono impostati a una statica e isolata monumentalità, con un colore denso e molto sfumato, che procura una forte tridimensionalità. I gesti e le espressioni sono intonate a una serena dolcezza e le fisionomie sono spesso tipiche dell'artista, come la Madonna dalla boccuccia stretta derivata dalle fattezze dalla modella del pittore, sua moglie, che ispirò anche gran parte della produzione giovanile di Raffaello.

On the sides there are two symmetrical groups, with a pair of angels on the left and an angel and a saint on the right, perhaps an evangelist.

The architectural structures are simple and robust, with a pavilion of round arches supported by square pillars with very protruding capitals, perfectly centered in perspective. This is the porticoed background typical of the artist's works from the last two decades of the 15th century.

The characters are set to a static and isolated monumentality, with a dense and very nuanced color, which provides a strong three-dimensionality. The gestures and expressions are in tune with a serene sweetness and the physiognomies are often typical of the artist, such as the Madonna with the narrow mouth derived from the features of the model of the painter, his wife, who also inspired much of Raphael's youth production.

In una serena e calibrata architettura rinascimentale san Bernardo di Chiaravalle, dedito allo studio di un libro posto su un leggio raffinatamente intagliato, riceve l'apparizione della Vergine, che si rivolge a lui indicando il libro. Ai lati si trovano due gruppi simmetrici, con una coppia di angeli a sinistra e un angelo e un santo a destra, forse un evangelista.

Le strutture architettoniche sono semplici e robuste, con un padiglione di archi a tutto sesto retti da pilastri squadrati con capitelli molto aggettanti, centrati perfettamente in prospettiva. Si tratta dello sfondo a portico tipico delle opere dell'artista degli ultimi due decenni del XV secolo.

I personaggi sono impostati a una statica e isolata monumentalità, con un colore denso e molto sfumato, che procura una forte tridimensionalità. I gesti e le espressioni sono intonate a una serena dolcezza e le fisionomie sono spesso tipiche dell'artista, come la Madonna dalla boccuccia stretta derivata dalle fattezze dalla modella del pittore, sua moglie, che ispirò anche gran parte della produzione giovanile di Raffaello.

In a serene and calibrated Renaissance architecture, Saint Bernard of Chiaravalle, dedicated to the study of a book placed on a finely carved lectern, receives the apparition of the Virgin, who turns to him indicating the book. On the sides there are two symmetrical groups, with a pair of angels on the left and an angel and a saint on the right, perhaps an evangelist.

The island of Sicily is a land that you never stop discovering, rich in natural treasures, artistic works, artifacts that are the fruit of human ingenuity, in its historical and cultural panorama it is the popular traditions that represent an unparalleled "eco living, static and dynamic at the same time "that exist (and persist) becoming visible, only when it is the people themselves who decide to give voice to them, traditions whose roots sink into a dark and distant past made up of stratified cultures between them, very often synonymous with wars and dominations, to throw ever green leaves in the present: this as a preamble to what I am going to describe in words and photographs, of the traditional folk festival of the "Maiorchino tournament", unique in its kind, which is is held this year in the Sicilian town of Novara di Sicilia. This ancient medieval center is an ancient village located in the province of Messina, whose name seems to come from a transformation of the ancient Latin name Noa into the Arabic language Nouah, which means "flower garden", to indicate the beauty of this territory, so appreciated by the Arabs when they settled here. The “Maiorchino Tournament” is a game that was once very popular in the province of Messina (Sicily) in the areas of the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, but which today survives exclusively in the town of Novara di Sicilia; the game-competition, complete with cheering towards the various teams, takes place during the Carnival period, it is a team competition (each team consists of three players, both men and women), which consists in throwing a heavy circular shape the precious Novara di Sicilia cheese called “Maiorchino” (cheese made with sheep's and goat's milk, whose weight varies between 10 and 12 kg); to throw the heavy cheese the players use a rope that is wound (as if it were a yo-yo) along the circumference of the cheese, a rope that is previously treated with pitch, to make it more "sticky" when it is unrolled during the launch; the route is downhill and is in stages, the total length of which is about one kilometer; to complete the entire course each team will have to do a lot of throws, the team that completes the entire course with fewer throws as possible wins. The photographs of the tournament, both for men and women, I took on Shrove Tuesday this year 2022, while the last two past editions were not taken due to the covid-19 pandemic.

L’isola di Sicilia è una terra che non si finisce mai di scoprire, ricchissima di tesori naturali, di opere artistiche, di manufatti frutto dell’ingegno umano, nel suo panorama storico e culturale sono le tradizioni popolari quelle che rappresentano una ineguagliabile “eco vivente, statica e dinamica al tempo stesso” che esistono (e persistono) divenendo visibili, solo nel momento in cui è il popolo stesso che decide di dare voce ad esse, tradizioni le cui radici sprofondano in un oscuro e lontano passato fatto di culture stratificate tra loro, molto spesso sinonimo di guerre e dominazioni, per gettare foglie sempre verdi nel presente: questo come preambolo di quanto vado a descrivere in parole e fotografie, della tradizionale festa popolare del “torneo del Maiorchino”, unica nel suo genere, che si è tenuto quest’anno nel paese siciliano di Novara di Sicilia. Questo antico centro medioevale è un antico borgo situato in provincia di Messina, Il cui nome sembrerebbe provenire da una trasformazione dell’antico nome latino Noa nella lingua araba Nouah, che significa “giardino fiorito”, ad indicare la bellezza di questo territorio, così apprezzato dagli Arabi quando qui si insediarono. Il “Torneo del Maiorchino”, è un gioco in passato molto diffuso in provincia di Messina nelle zone dei monti Nebrodi e dei monti Peloritani, ma che oggi sopravvive esclusivamente a Novara di Sicilia; il gioco-competizione, con tanto di tifo verso le varie squadre, si svolge durante il periodo di Carnevale, è una gara a squadre (ogni squadra è composta da tre giocatori, sia uomini che donne), che consiste nel lanciare una pesante forma circolare del pregiato formaggio di Novara di Sicilia chiamato “Maiorchino” (formaggio realizzato con latte di pecora e di capra, il cui peso varia tra i 10 ed i 12 Kg); per lanciare il pesante formaggio ci si avvale di una corda che viene avvolta (come se fosse uno di yo-yo) lungo La circonferenza del formaggio, corda che viene precedentemente trattata con della pece, per renderla più “adesiva” quando verrà srotolata durante il lancio; il percorso è in discesa ed è a tappe, la cui lunghezza totale è di circa un chilometro; per completare l’intero percorso ogni squadra dovrà fare molto lanci, vince la squadra che completerà l’intero percorso con meno lanci possibili. Le fotografie del torneo, sia maschile che femminile, le ho realizzate il giorno di martedì grasso di quest’anno 2022, mentre le due ultime passate edizioni non state realizzate a causa della pandemia da covid-19.

L’isola di Sicilia è una terra che non si finisce mai di scoprire, ricchissima di tesori naturali, di opere artistiche, di manufatti frutto dell’ingegno umano, nel suo panorama storico e culturale sono le tradizioni popolari quelle che rappresentano una ineguagliabile “eco vivente, statica e dinamica al tempo stesso” che esistono (e persistono) divenendo visibili, solo nel momento in cui è il popolo stesso che decide di dare voce ad esse, tradizioni le cui radici sprofondano in un oscuro e lontano passato fatto di culture stratificate tra loro, molto spesso sinonimo di guerre e dominazioni, per gettare foglie sempre verdi nel presente: questo come preambolo di quanto vado a descrivere in parole e fotografie, della tradizionale festa popolare del “torneo del Maiorchino”, unica nel suo genere, che si è tenuto quest’anno nel paese siciliano di Novara di Sicilia. Questo antico centro medioevale è un antico borgo situato in provincia di Messina, Il cui nome sembrerebbe provenire da una trasformazione dell’antico nome latino Noa nella lingua araba Nouah, che significa “giardino fiorito”, ad indicare la bellezza di questo territorio, così apprezzato dagli Arabi quando qui si insediarono. Il “Torneo del Maiorchino”, è un gioco in passato molto diffuso in provincia di Messina nelle zone dei monti Nebrodi e dei monti Peloritani, ma che oggi sopravvive esclusivamente a Novara di Sicilia; il gioco-competizione, con tanto di tifo verso le varie squadre, si svolge durante il periodo di Carnevale, è una gara a squadre (ogni squadra è composta da tre giocatori, sia uomini che donne), che consiste nel lanciare una pesante forma circolare del pregiato formaggio di Novara di Sicilia chiamato “Maiorchino” (formaggio realizzato con latte di pecora e di capra, il cui peso varia tra i 10 ed i 12 Kg); per lanciare il pesante formaggio ci si avvale di una corda che viene avvolta (come se fosse uno di yo-yo) lungo La circonferenza del formaggio, corda che viene precedentemente trattata con della pece, per renderla più “adesiva” quando verrà srotolata durante il lancio; il percorso è in discesa ed è a tappe, la cui lunghezza totale è di circa un chilometro; per completare l’intero percorso ogni squadra dovrà fare molto lanci, vince la squadra che completerà l’intero percorso con meno lanci possibili. Le fotografie del torneo, sia maschile che femminile, le ho realizzate il giorno di martedì grasso di quest’anno 2022, mentre le due ultime passate edizioni non state realizzate a causa della pandemia da covid-19.

The island of Sicily is a land that you never stop discovering, rich in natural treasures, artistic works, artifacts that are the fruit of human ingenuity, in its historical and cultural panorama it is the popular traditions that represent an unparalleled "eco living, static and dynamic at the same time "that exist (and persist) becoming visible, only when it is the people themselves who decide to give voice to them, traditions whose roots sink into a dark and distant past made up of stratified cultures between them, very often synonymous with wars and dominations, to throw ever green leaves in the present: this as a preamble to what I am going to describe in words and photographs, of the traditional folk festival of the "Maiorchino tournament", unique in its kind, which is is held this year in the Sicilian town of Novara di Sicilia. This ancient medieval center is an ancient village located in the province of Messina, whose name seems to come from a transformation of the ancient Latin name Noa into the Arabic language Nouah, which means "flower garden", to indicate the beauty of this territory, so appreciated by the Arabs when they settled here. The “Maiorchino Tournament” is a game that was once very popular in the province of Messina (Sicily) in the areas of the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, but which today survives exclusively in the town of Novara di Sicilia; the game-competition, complete with cheering towards the various teams, takes place during the Carnival period, it is a team competition (each team consists of three players, both men and women), which consists in throwing a heavy circular shape the precious Novara di Sicilia cheese called “Maiorchino” (cheese made with sheep's and goat's milk, whose weight varies between 10 and 12 kg); to throw the heavy cheese the players use a rope that is wound (as if it were a yo-yo) along the circumference of the cheese, a rope that is previously treated with pitch, to make it more "sticky" when it is unrolled during the launch; the route is downhill and is in stages, the total length of which is about one kilometer; to complete the entire course each team will have to do a lot of throws, the team that completes the entire course with fewer throws as possible wins. The photographs of the tournament, both for men and women, I took on Shrove Tuesday this year 2022, while the last two past editions were not taken due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Il “Torneo del Maiorchino”, è un gioco in passato molto diffuso in provincia di Messina nelle zone dei monti Nebrodi e dei monti Peloritani, ma che oggi sopravvive esclusivamente a Novara di Sicilia; il gioco-competizione, con tanto di tifo verso le varie squadre, si svolge durante il periodo di Carnevale, è una gara a squadre (ogni squadra è composta da tre giocatori, sia uomini che donne), che consiste nel lanciare una pesante forma circolare del pregiato formaggio di Novara di Sicilia chiamato “Maiorchino” (formaggio realizzato con latte di pecora e di capra, il cui peso varia tra i 10 ed i 12 Kg); per lanciare il pesante formaggio ci si avvale di una corda che viene avvolta (come se fosse uno di yo-yo) lungo La circonferenza del formaggio, corda che viene precedentemente trattata con della pece, per renderla più “adesiva” quando verrà srotolata durante il lancio; il percorso è in discesa ed è a tappe, la cui lunghezza totale è di circa un chilometro; per completare l’intero percorso ogni squadra dovrà fare molto lanci, vince la squadra che completerà l’intero percorso con meno lanci possibili. Le fotografie del torneo, sia maschile che femminile, le ho realizzate il giorno di martedì grasso di quest’anno 2022, mentre le due ultime passate edizioni non state realizzate a causa della pandemia da covid-19.

The island of Sicily is a land that you never stop discovering, rich in natural treasures, artistic works, artifacts that are the fruit of human ingenuity, in its historical and cultural panorama it is the popular traditions that represent an unparalleled "eco living, static and dynamic at the same time "that exist (and persist) becoming visible, only when it is the people themselves who decide to give voice to them, traditions whose roots sink into a dark and distant past made up of stratified cultures between them, very often synonymous with wars and dominations, to throw ever green leaves in the present: this as a preamble to what I am going to describe in words and photographs, of the traditional folk festival of the "Maiorchino tournament", unique in its kind, which is is held this year in the Sicilian town of Novara di Sicilia. This ancient medieval center is an ancient village located in the province of Messina, whose name seems to come from a transformation of the ancient Latin name Noa into the Arabic language Nouah, which means "flower garden", to indicate the beauty of this territory, so appreciated by the Arabs when they settled here. The “Maiorchino Tournament” is a game that was once very popular in the province of Messina (Sicily) in the areas of the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, but which today survives exclusively in the town of Novara di Sicilia; the game-competition, complete with cheering towards the various teams, takes place during the Carnival period, it is a team competition (each team consists of three players, both men and women), which consists in throwing a heavy circular shape the precious Novara di Sicilia cheese called “Maiorchino” (cheese made with sheep's and goat's milk, whose weight varies between 10 and 12 kg); to throw the heavy cheese the players use a rope that is wound (as if it were a yo-yo) along the circumference of the cheese, a rope that is previously treated with pitch, to make it more "sticky" when it is unrolled during the launch; the route is downhill and is in stages, the total length of which is about one kilometer; to complete the entire course each team will have to do a lot of throws, the team that completes the entire course with fewer throws as possible wins. L’isola di Sicilia è una terra che non si finisce mai di scoprire, ricchissima di tesori naturali, di opere artistiche, di manufatti frutto dell’ingegno umano, nel suo panorama storico e culturale sono le tradizioni popolari quelle che rappresentano una ineguagliabile “eco vivente, statica e dinamica al tempo stesso” che esistono (e persistono) divenendo visibili, solo nel momento in cui è il popolo stesso che decide di dare voce ad esse, tradizioni le cui radici sprofondano in un oscuro e lontano passato fatto di culture stratificate tra loro, molto spesso sinonimo di guerre e dominazioni, per gettare foglie sempre verdi nel presente: questo come preambolo di quanto vado a descrivere in parole e fotografie, della tradizionale festa popolare del “torneo del Maiorchino”, unica nel suo genere, che si è tenuto quest’anno nel paese siciliano di Novara di Sicilia. Questo antico centro medioevale è un antico borgo situato in provincia di Messina, Il cui nome sembrerebbe provenire da una trasformazione dell’antico nome latino Noa nella lingua araba Nouah, che significa “giardino fiorito”, ad indicare la bellezza di questo territorio, così apprezzato dagli Arabi quando qui si insediarono. Il “Torneo del Maiorchino”, è un gioco in passato molto diffuso in provincia di Messina nelle zone dei monti Nebrodi e dei monti Peloritani, ma che oggi sopravvive esclusivamente a Novara di Sicilia; il gioco-competizione, con tanto di tifo verso le varie squadre, si svolge durante il periodo di Carnevale, è una gara a squadre (ogni squadra è composta da tre giocatori, sia uomini che donne), che consiste nel lanciare una pesante forma circolare del pregiato formaggio di Novara di Sicilia chiamato “Maiorchino” (formaggio realizzato con latte di pecora e di capra, il cui peso varia tra i 10 ed i 12 Kg); per lanciare il pesante formaggio ci si avvale di una corda che viene avvolta (come se fosse uno di yo-yo) lungo La circonferenza del formaggio, corda che viene precedentemente trattata con della pece, per renderla più “adesiva” quando verrà srotolata durante il lancio; il percorso è in discesa ed è a tappe, la cui lunghezza totale è di circa un chilometro; per completare l’intero percorso ogni squadra dovrà fare molto lanci, vince la squadra che completerà l’intero percorso con meno lanci possibili. Le fotografie del torneo, sia maschile che femminile, le ho realizzate il giorno di martedì grasso di quest’anno 2022, mentre le due ultime passate edizioni non state realizzate a causa della pandemia da covid-19.
