This picture was taken on the island of Flores (Azores) in the Bay of Alagoa.
A few month ago I uploaded a picture from this rocks by daylight. We slept in our tent nearby and I left the tent after midnight. I was stunned - without any synthetic light they are hundreds and thousends of stars easily visible.
On the hills was a little orange spot light - this is the reason why the clouds shimmered orange.

It was time to go. We wanted to go to Gythio, for the lighthouse there in particular and see what we could get out of it. We were losing darkness fast by now. We picked up our gear, a quick check to make sure we did not forget anything and there we were, walking at the beach under the starlit sky, on our way back to the car. I stayed behind. I turned for a last fleeting look at Dimitrios, to thank it and say my goodbye. It was standing proudly there in its solitude and it was like wishing us its farewell. Somehow, the camera and a small tabletop tripod that I always carry with me, found their way into my hands. One last shot I thought. My goodbye to the ship. Until we meet again...

Perceid meteors over Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, Georgia.
Having some fun with the twisted shape of one of many large, dead trees on the beach which present an eerie scene in the starlit night. I immediately thought of one of the "bugs" from the 1997 movie Starship Troopers when seeing this particular tree. Admittedly not the greatest dark sky viewing with much light pollution coming from a lighthouse and port visible a few miles to the left of the scene but it did help with foreground illumination.
Jupiter is the bright object to the right of center and Saturn is slightly dimmer, up and to the right of Jupiter.
Of course A.E. Housman (1859-1936) occured to me:

in hedgerows low beneath the shadows
of great trees that stand tall
you'll find these miracles of life
even though they are so small
yet they are many

to know life is so plentiful

Beneath the starlit sky, the towering gate stands in solemn vigilance, its weathered stones whispering of knights long vanished. Their footsteps have faded into silence, leaving only their echos to the imagination.
I have seen many castles in my travels, but very few that can rival Raby Castle. Every section is amazing and it starts with walking through these massive 14th Century gates.

Simply standing in this spot was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. The moon was nowhere to be seen, giving way to the starlit sky. We camped at Panther Falls in Sequoia for only one night, and this is my final photo from this trip.
I like to retain as much detail in night photography as possible, even if I have to combine better lit shots. In this case, I let the camera sit from sunset on til midnight, taking a shot every 30 minutes or so. I ended up only using four well-lit foreground/background shots and two star shots.
