Another teaser / piece of my SF-1 project.
One of the first stops on our summer road trip was in Wisconson. While there we took a boat up the river at Wisconsin Dells in an area known for rock formations like this. I can imagine seeing these in Arizona or Utah, but here in Wisconsin, it was a big surprise.
This formation is known as Stand Rock, and during the summer, trained dogs will leap from one surface to the other. If you look closely, there is a net in the space between the rocks. When we arrived, it had just rained, so the demonstration was canceled for safety reasons.
Nevertheless, there is a famous image of this rock taken by HH Bennett over a hundred years ago. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._H._Bennett#Innovations_in_photog...) That image is in the lower part of the frame, and it depicts his son jumping from one rock to the other (without a net). Among other things, Bennett was a pioneer in photography because he invented the shutter which freezes motion.
Back then there was a lot of logging here. If you look closely at the old image, Stand Rock is mostly exposed. Today it's covered in a thick canopy of trees as logging has long since ceased. Anyway, I thought it was cool that not only is there an old photo of this rock, but it is related to photographic history as well.
The southwestern-most cooling tower of Ratcliffe Power Station is visible through Red Hill Fast Tunnel as 45120 hurries the 1M88 1710 Sheffield-St Pancras over the Trent on Tuesday 30th May 1978 while the pillbox atop Red Hill stands guard over proceedings. At the time if you looked immediately right when exiting the south end of the tunnel there was some interesting equipment stored in the field including a human cannonball truck & several silver projectiles looking very much like German V2 rockets.

It didn't turn out to be an exciting sunrise this morning. The sun came up for a couple of minutes and was then stuck behind the thickest lot of clouds for hours. The swell was up though along with the westerly wind. So I managed to get this wicked close-out with plenty of spray while the sun showed its colours for a few moments. I'm used to shootin the waves in daylight with a shutter speed of over 1000 to capture the speed with detail. This was shot at a shutter speed at 250 which was the highest I could go due to the low light.

Fisheye Friday
I have been tagged by Anam Cara Photography ॐ to share 8 things about me. So here goes ...
A. List 8 habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
B. Tag 8 people to do the same.
1. When I was a child I was always singing. One night I went to a restaurant with my parents and ended up on top of a table entertaining all the guests who, in return, showered me with candy. Hard to imagine now considering I can’t carry a tune to safe my life. One even more embarrassing episode was when I started singing “By the rivers of Babylon” at a funeral. My parents were mortified and I’m never going to live that one down.
2. I have got a severe dislike of nylon and it will not come anywhere near my body. At the age of 8 I decided I could not stand wearing tights any longer and just refused to put them on. I have not even touched them ever since, just the thought makes my skin crawl. And I don’t care if it is freezing outside, for me it is socks and socks only!
3. I can write in reverse so if you hold the paper up to a mirror it will display correctly. Not block letters, proper joint up writing.
4. I’ve always dreamed of owning a classic Beetle Convertible but the men in my life never let me have it. When I was 18 and bought my first car my dad, who is a mechanic, told me straight out that if I buy a Beetle he would refuse to fix it and I have to take it to a garage if something goes wrong. I suppose he had a point, they are not very practical in a country with -40 degrees and snow for 5 months. And now my husband won’t budge either. He did promise that he would buy me one if we ever win the lottery. I’ve already told him it has to be white and I want a big yellow daisy painted on the bonnet.
5. When I first came to London over 13 years ago I shared a house with 12 people from all over the world. We had Aussies, Kiwis, South Africans, Canadians, Irish and English. I stayed there for 5 years and had the best time ever. Always some kind of party going on and lots of BBQs thanks to our friends from the Southern hemisphere.
6. I need my sleep and I LOVE my bed! It has the most comfortable mattress in the world and if I only had 2 items to take to a desert island, my bed would definitely be one of them. After all, a girl needs her beauty sleep, right?
7. I love entertaining and the most pleasurable night for me is having friends around for dinner. I can spend hours going through cookbooks planning the menu and then potter in the kitchen all afternoon. So much more rewarding than going out to a crowded and noisy pub. As a result we often have friends staying for the weekend. When I was off work last summer I even started making towel animals for the guest room. One of my friends almost doubled over laughing when she saw my little towel dog and decided it was definitely time for me to go back to work before I turn into Bree Van de Kamp Hodge.
8. I’m addicted to Crispy Bacon Wheat Crunchies. I usually don’t mind sharing my food but when it comes to them, fingers off! They are mine alone. Unfortunately they only come in little 25g bags and every time I go to the supermarket I secretly hope that they have started packaging them in big family size bags. No luck so far, I’ll have to carry on wishing …

I very rarely wear heels these days due to being old and unstable plus they are very uncomfortable when walking around shops
Yes they look nice and help make the old pins look nice too but how often do you see girls during the day in 5 inch stilettos
When I started buying my own clothes I'd never dream of anything other than ridiculously high heels but as I've learnt to do makeup better I've also learnt that the clothes are just as important and flats or low heels show a woman who is comfortable and not trying to impress anyone
Next time I go out at night I'll wear them out, if I'm not in need of a Zimmer frame since it's been a while and I'm not seeing any party's on the horizon 😭
Stand tall. We are all basically here today, gone tomorrow. Make your mark on the world, no matter how fleeting it may seem. If we're blessed, we will be remembered for at least one moment when we made some lasting impression.

This stand alone cottage was where my maternal grandfather was born. It may look quite nice and picturesque here in the present day, but back then in the late 1800s it was more remote and as I understand it, he grew up in fairly challenging circumstances. Despite that. he made it to a grammar school and from there on to university in Oxford. There is a plaque in honour of him on the house, and the housing estate surrounding here that was built subsequently, has all the roads named after his academic associations. On the estate there are Oxford Drive, Cambridge Drive, Harvard Close, Edinburgh Drive, Peterhouse Close, Balliol Close and Wadham Gardens. I did take photos of all those signs but to post them would be rather dull!
I never met him, he died before I was born by a few years, but I made a point of tracking down this location and visiting it.
