The Stained-Glass Dragonfly

The stained-glass Dragonfly emerged from his cocoon to shine a light on a fragile world. Equally fragile himself, he thought it was worth the risk.

‘Go safe out there in 2017’ was his belated message, he was having his wings cleaned and window cleaners do not work on Bank Holidays.

oh, so that's what 100 comments looks like

“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”―Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Sherborne, England

Several Danaus plexippus (Monarch butterfly) clustering for overwintering amongst the withering leaves of an oak at Ernle Clark Reserve, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Smaller clusters here (a few hundred spread around this tree), but it is a lovely park and one of my favourite old haunts. While there is something to be said for the larger, denser clusters (which I've been photographing elsewhere), there is something I love about them spread out in smaller groups in the oak leaves and basking - especially when sunny (if not exactly warm) when a few will leave and rejoin, causing the perched ones to flap their wings in sympathy (yes, probably protest). I can watch them for hours.

I love the way the sun passes through those backlit wings like stained glass windows. While the background is contrastier than I like, it sort of frames the subject here.

This may be the first time I have shared a butterfly in flight as I don't like how awkward/ungainly they seem when frozen in time mid-flap. But I really like what it is doing here with wings outstretched.

Macro Monday theme: Backlit

A few years ago I built a to scale replica of the Duomo de Milan. This stained glass window is part of that model, it measures 2 inches by 1 inch.

The stained glass texture is a wild one - I am intrigued with the variations in the hues and web like shaping

Let go of dead things

autumn is a second spring

the moon and the earth

reverberate sad songs

turn the past

life starts again

I can see the clouds

the birds flying by

the falling rain

The central window in the above collage stands at the east end of St John's Church, in the Wellington suburb of Trentham (See previous photo). The window (which is actually 3 panes joined together) in turn stands behind the Altar / Communion Table and is a focal point of the church.

The rest of the stained glass windows in the Collage above fill the remaining window frames around the church...

For more information on the background to these windows, have a look at www.stjohnstrentham.org.nz/site_files/18799/upload_files/...(JuliaStuart).pdf?dl=1, pages 32 - 42.

There's quite a lot of reading within those pages, but they contain a fascinating and detailed explanation of how these beautiful windows came to be installed...

(And in case you're wondering, the photos above are my work, as are some of the photos on the church web site!). :-))

Thanks for taking the time and the trouble to leave a Comment beneath this photo Folks! It's always nice to hear from you, and your comments are always very much appreciated...!
