Statue of St Radegund above the entrance of the church dedicated to her. Thuringian by birth, St Radegund was a queen of Chlothar I (r. 511-561). In 550 she turned to the contemplative life and later founded a convent at Poiters, which took the name of the Holy Cross after receiving a piece of that relic from the Byzantine emperor Justin II in 569. Radegund died in 587. The convent still exists and preserves the relic.
I had never realized that my grandparents lived on a hillside beneath mountains--the Aurunci Mountains. I did hear tales of my grandmother riding a burro but did not quite put a mental picture together. I placed a note around the tower of St. Peter's in the middle left of the townscape. View large to see the tower. I'll post another image that shows a better view of the town and tower.
A woman identified as M.B. described how early Methodists sang hymns withouth hymn books. She "lined" songs for us -- meaning that she sang a song, line by line. We would repeat each line after she sang it. Early Methodist worship would include perhaps two hours of singing in each service.

St Jude's has had an important part to play in the life of the local community since the church was built in 1894.
7 Jan was a perfect snowy day in Hampshire, with bright blue skies (except in this shot), exceptionally clear sub-zero air over frozen snow, and little wind. I started at St Cross because it's easy to reach from main roads: side roads were white and icy.
The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty was founded in the 1132 by Bishop Henry de Blois for 'thirteen poor men, feeble and so reduced in strength that they can scarcely or not at all support themselves without other aid'. It is still an almshouse and also still distributes a 'wayfarer's dole' of bread and beer to any passer by. It has this magnificent chapel, started in 1160 and slightly modernised in the 14th and 15th centuries.
I played with various combinations of the chapel and the trees, but preferred the simplicity of this one in the end. I particularly like the clear, cold light, and the indirect light in the shadows, especially the transept wall.

Roman Catholic church. 1937-38, by Reynolds and Scott. Buff brick (roof not visible). Modernist Byzantine style. Nave with low central tower, west narthex with south porch, tall north and south aisles, north chapels and vestry, chancel and apse. Very high nave with pilastered parapet stepped up in the centre to meet chamfered corners of low tower which has 3 small round-headed lancets at parapet level and a band of small rectangular windows below the cornice (alternately blind); tall south aisle in the form of 3 gabled transeptal bays with narrow links (the gables false), a square-headed doorway to the centre bay with stone surround flanked by small square-headed lancets, 3 similar lancets in each of the outer bays, and above these openings in each bay a tall round-headed lancet in a round-headed blank arch. Tall gabled porch to left with doorway like that in centre but including a statue in a niche, and an oculus above. Tall narthex with similar west doorway, and west window above like those of the aisle. North aisle similar to south aisle but with low chapels attached to centre and west bays.Interior: 3 sail-domes with transverse arches on wall-piers pierced for aisle passages and by semi-circular arches at the tops; north aisle chapels formed of 3 low semi-circular arches diminishing in succession; apsidal sanctuary with mosaic arcading ceiling depicting the Holy Spirit as dove, side chapels and altars also with mosaics. Similar to Church of St Dunstan, Moston Lane, Lightbowne (q.v.), also by Reynolds.

St. Boniface window in St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 256 N. Ohio in Wichita Kansas. Built in 1902-1905 by the German Catholic community to serve the German speaking population in the parish. It is considered the oldest catholic church in Wichita.
The stained glass windows are very rare. They cannot be replaced today. The pigment is burned into the glass and the process is no longer used today. The windows were made in Germany, packed in straw, loaded on boats and shipped to America. Once in Wichita, workman followed a diagram to piece the windows together. Most of the inscriptions on the windows are in German.
The parish was originallyh named for St. Boniface, patron saint of the Germans. The inscription reads: "To the memory of H.H. Debrecht.
St. Peter's Basilica has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world and is regarded as one of the holiest Christian sites. St. Peter is held to have been buried here, and many popes are also buried here.

As an aside, St. Peter's Square was designed by Bernini. I love Bernini.

Pfarrkirche St. Rochus
Nach dem Abriss der baufälligen St.-Rochus-Kapelle aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert (1869) wurde etwa 70 Meter moselaufwärts 1869-70 durch den Koblenzer Baumeister Hermann Nebel die neugotische Kirche erbaut.
Sie erhielt 1910/11 durch Peter Marx einen neugotischen Anbau und einen massiven Turm. Ebenso wurde zu dieser Zeit das benachbarte Pfarrhaus errichtet.
Die Kirche ist dem hl. Rochus geweiht, dem Schutzpatron der Pestkranken und der Haustiere.
Erst 1999 wurde die St. Rochus-Kapelle durch Weihbischof Schwarz konsekriert und in den Rang einer Pfarrkirche erhoben.
