St. Louis is an independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city. These two rivers combined form the fourth longest river system in the world. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.
The economy of metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. Its metro area is home to major corporations, including Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina and Sigma-Aldrich. Nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri are located within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The city has also become known for its growing medical, pharmaceutical, and research presence due to institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis has two professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. One of the city's iconic sights is the 630-foot (192 m) tall Gateway Arch in the downtown area.

The Saint Louis Zoological Park, commonly known as the Saint Louis Zoo, is in Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri. It is recognized as a leading zoo in animal management, research, conservation, and education. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Admission is free based on a public subsidy from a cultural tax district, the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District (ZMD); fees are charged for some special attractions. A special feature is the 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge Emerson Zooline Railroad with passenger trains pulled by Chance Rides C.P. Huntington locomotives that encircle the zoo, stopping at the more popular attractions.
The city purchased its first exhibit, the Flight Cage, from the Smithsonian Institution following the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. After the zoo was established in 1910, new exhibits, areas and buildings were added through the decades to improve care of the animals, the range of animals and habitats shown, as well as education and interpretation.
This columned state rooml with two tiers of windows is finished with Carrara marble and ormolu. In the far end, above the throne dais, is a bas-relief of St. George slaying the dragon.

The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot (192 m) monument in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of a weighted catenary arch, it is the world's tallest arch, the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere, and Missouri's tallest accessible building. Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, and officially dedicated to "the American people," the Arch, commonly referred to as "The Gateway to the West" is the centerpiece of Gateway Arch National Park and has become an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis, as well as a popular tourist destination.
The Arch was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1947; construction began on February 12, 1963 and was completed on October 28, 1965 at an overall cost of $13 million (equivalent to $80.6 million in 2018). The monument opened to the public on June 10, 1967. It is located at the site of St. Louis's founding on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

This is my neighbourhood in a small town of 12,000. We are considered rural and remote. We are two hours from the nearest city or neighbouring town. Our skyscrapers are old trees to high up cliffs or awkward for the lumberjacks to have taken over the years. We are renowned among the Quebecois as a place to reconnect with nature. I am grateful that, even on a busy, rainy day, I get to soak a little of this type of vista up while I walk to or from work. Speaking of work, I have meetings tonight so I will have to come back to comment on streams after that is finished.

I never expected to see a St. Bernard running agility. I would think that being so big would endanger them of long-term injury, but I guess that agility is the type of thing that dogs were designed to do and I'm sure that if it wasn't safe, the AKC and other agility organizations wouldn't allow it. Besides being huge, this dog was hugely cute and fun to watch.
Last weekend's agility trial was held in a covered arena that had really nice lighting, especially before the sun came up all the way, but unfortunately, there wasn't enough of it, so it was a challenge to come up with sharp shots. I started with my 400mm f/5.6, non-stabilization, prime, which I like better for outdoors, but I later switched to my 70-200mm f/2.8 and shot closer to get more light. The zoom turned out to be really handy, anyway, due to the large variation in the sizes of the dogs.
