It was a pleasant day for Stormtrooper Bruce in spite of all the pitiful rumors about a new mission to some planet with petrifying conditions. At one point he piped in about the one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eaters. The gasps of horror were totally priceless. Three points for STB, he thought as he chuckled privately. But now, he had to prepare for tonight. And as usual, the universe had other plans.

PP: Surprise, Unka Dude! We're early - hope you're prepared!

STB: A pleasant surprise to be sure. So, who are you today, Little Dude?

PP: Today I'm Pete the Pirate! And Unka Pappy here is my First Mate, Peppy Pappy!

Palpatine: Now nephew, I'm NOT your first mate. I'm only here to check on the progress of your daily alphabet project.

PP: And...

Palpatine: "sigh* And... to tote the most pentabulous Poster you've ever made.

STB: Wow, Pete, your poster's perfect! And - I'm pleased to see you two. I've been planning all day for tonight's pizza party, but wasn't expecting a party of three. There's plenty to go around, sir. I can grab an extra plate if you'll honor us with your presence.

PP: No problema, Unka Dude. Who can say no to pepperoni?

Palpatine: Actually, my precious Pete, I can. I have a power point meeting to prepare. And for the last time, he's not your uncle, I am.

PP: And for the pajillionth time Unka Pappy, it's only pretend.

In spite of this kid thinking my name is Elma (also that I am the wife of Elmo) as well as thinking I have flight capabilities, he's fairly intelligent! After being the subject of the many nauseating photos you see here, he wanted to give it a go.

Subject matter: Understandable

Technical Skills: Not quite there yet

Considering the camera was nearly as big as he, I think he did a great job...

Verlane: JamesPort, NY: 05 July 2006

I should be working and instead I did this just in spite, I reckon.

I've bought those arches for something completely different but they didn't work as I thought where I wanted them. And then just when I was about to toss them aside I thought they would make an interesting cowl for a modified version of Adam's T-bucket - the window piece sits here the other way around, with studs facing forward. And while said cowl doesn't make a proper T-bucket as desired, it works well enough for the Saxon I've built a while back.

Offsetting the grille mask by half a plate gave me a little headache but eventually I did it, so I can visually "kill" the square corners of the hood from just about any angle. And since I was on the job, I've also squeezed the proportions a little so I can fit the wheels I originally wanted for this car. They're still a little bit too small in diameter, but I like a lot how they feel and work on this car.

Toot-toot!

In spite of dreadful dreary weather, and the potential to have 2 black bricks on the head end, I ventured down to Carrollton to take a look at the stone train operation on 12/22/2020. It had been at least 20 years and I wanted to scout out the access to the tunnel at Robertsville for future better days. There aren't many railroad tunnels in the state of Ohio and this one is in the county where I grew up. But it almost wasn't here anymore. A few years ago a caboose that was being moved was stuck when part of the tunnel collapsed and it was over a year before it was cleared and the tunnel repaired. Fortunately, the friendly crew hid the black GP38's behind the 111 so i at least had a nicely painted nose for the couple of shots that I did. This section of the Wheeling & Lake Eire dates back to the narrow gauge Connotten Valley of the 1880's.

Happy Halloween everyone. In spite of the rain there has been some trick or treating around my place. This morning, when I took the photo, the fierce winds overnight had died down a bit but there were several piles of leaves on the ground from the gum trees.

So ends October and another 31 day Challenge. It was a month of travelling, rain in Melbourne and fun. Thanks Judi for inviting me again. But I don't know how people manage the 365 challenge.

. . . in spite of man.

Granddaughter Elizabeth and I rode our bikes to the park where she likes to play. One of her favorite things is climbing through the suspended rings which, in spite of what it looks like from this angle, get progressively smaller as she moves from that far end toward me. Oh, and notice that the little daredevil is balancing without holding on with her hands.

it seems right to me to close this adventure of the Stone curlew with this photo. A photo that certainly does not make people cry for its beauty, but it is a miracle for what it represents. The strength with which nature in its simple and stubborn desire to resist "in spite of everything" will never cease to amaze me.

Since I found the eggs, at the shed placement, at the photo sessions, our first concern was the safety of the nest. May was a terrible month from the climatic point of view, cold and rain have hit Parma incessantly. in a weekend more than 70 mm of water fell and temperatures reached 6 degrees. Sudden floods threatened the nest without anyone being able to do anything about it. Nature must take its course. We couldn't help but think of those poor birds hatching under the weather to protect their eggs. Our families now followed curious and worried the evolution of the brood, we were all rooting for them. Someone believed they couldn't do it, including me.

But nature takes its course "despite everything". Yesterday this wonderful surprise awaited us at the nest. The time for greetings, for wonder and a goodbye. Who knows, maybe in a few years I'll photograph them intent on hatching their nest.

NONOSTANTE TUTTO

If I put my hands around your wrists, would you fight them?

If I put my fingers in your mouth, would you bite them?

So many things that I would do if I had my way with you.

I can keep secrets that I know that you want me.

You could dig your nails into my skin and you won't stop me.

You could twist and scream into the air but no one can hear you here.

And there will be no tenderness, no tenderness.

There will be no tenderness, no tenderness.

I will show no mercy for you,

you had no mercy for me.

The only thing that I ask, love me mercilessly.

Thank you so much for stopping by and for all the kind comments and favs. They are very much appreciated!

In spite of the name, this is a very uncommon species that is found in many locations. However it is only my second sighting over the last couple years here in Trinidad.

In spite of it's soft appearance no one was interested in sitting on this bench. The temp was 35 degrees and rain mixed with snow was coming down hard.

I ain’t as clever as I seem

In spite of the fact

That I am learning every day

I know it ain’t all bad

I know that ain’t all bad

If I look in the right direction

In my mind

In the castle where I am the king

I will build up my arms

Until I cross my borders to conquer the world

On my one way crusade

I ain’t as beautiful as you

But I may return though

To see the beauty of it all

I know it ain’t all bad

I know that ain’t all bad

If I look in the right direction

Always a delight, in spite of the crowd and everything.

Well that is unavoidable!

In spite of several hard frosts, these ferns grow protected in the forest and still brighten the browns which are so dominant this time of year.

Definitely one of our showier moths, in spite of its tiny size

This gives new meaning to the expresssion "in over my head" as an Yellow Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly is buried head first in a freshly opened Hosta flower to drink the sweet nectar deep inside.

Good morning. Just a single posting today of the only butterfly photo I've posted that was actually taken in my garden this past summer. I made this one an exception due to the unusual nature of the shot with the Swallowtail positioned deeply in the flower blossom to feed. And unusual sight, and I was really amazed how the butterfly in spite of it's size was able to land and then climb inside. All while still fluttering it's wings since the flower was not sturdy/strong enough to hold it's full weight.

Take care...and I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday and upcoming weekend.

Milou usually gets what we call “wind on the brain”, but so far he’s been pretty calm and happy in spite of windy weather on the island of Schiermonnikoog.

One of the things I've learned is that you have to live in spite of. Although, one must eat. Although, one should love. Although, it must die. It is even often the self that pushes us forward. It was the despite that gave me an anguish that unsatisfied was the creator of my own life.

(Clarice Lispector)

In spite of the constant grey overcasts and smog, I did get a couple of half-decent shots of Victoria Harbour. Being from Sweden, I had never seen skyscrapers touching the clouds before. Really, it was an amazing experience.

The moai or Easter Island heads or Easter Island statues, represent the most important pieces of Rapa Nui art and they have become its trademark. However, in spite of their abundance, there are around 600 moai distributed throughout the whole island and 397 are in the Rano Raraku quarry, there are still plenty of unanswered questions regarding these stone giants.

Even though oral tradition states that it was Hotu Matu’a, or the seven explorers that reached the island before him, who brought the first Moai to the island, the most accepted theory is that it was the first Polynesian villagers who started sculpting stone once they were settled.

These stone giants were created by the Rapa Nui to represent their ancestors or past rulers, who after dying had the ability to extend their mana (spiritual power) over the tribe to protect it.

The Easter Island statues were at first sculpted out of basalt, trachyte and red scoria, but the preference soon switched to volcanic rock from the Rano Raraku quarry. At first the moais were small, with wide heads and short ears, but little by little the styling was changed to include long torsos and rectangular heads with long noses, thin lips and long ears, who’s imagine is so characteristic. Also, with the passing of time the sculptures increased in size to proportions that, it is believed, would have been impossible to transport.

The master carvers sculpted the stone with basalt or obsidian chisels and it’s calculated that a team of carvers could take 2 years in finishing a big moai. First, the front side was carved with all of the details except the eye sockets. Then, the back was chiseled to dislodge the stone statue from the main rock, stand it upright with the help of ropes and place it in the previously prepared pits.

Once upright, the sculpting was completed and the Moai was ready to take one of the four “Moai paths” that would lead it to the ahu (altar) it was destined for. Though many theories have been stipulated, the transport of the Moai is still the biggest unresolved mystery of Easter Island.

Once the Moai was set up in its ahu, the eye sockets were sculpted and, in a ceremonious ritual, the eyes made from white coral and red scoria were placed; from this moment on it was considered that the Moai’s mana could project over the tribe. Finally, an enormous red scoria cylinder called pukao was placed on top of its head. The meaning of the pukao is ambiguous, on one hand it is believed to have represented the tribe’s hierarchy and on the other to have symbolized the long hair that the islanders used to wear up in a bun.

The average height of a Moai is 4 meters. However, on the northern coast of the island one has been found that measures up to 10 meters and has an approximate weight of 82 tons. Also in the quarry, still attached to the rock, is the biggest Moai, almost 22 meters long and whose weight is estimated between 250 to 300 tons.

Though the majority of the Moai are male representations, because it is believed that all of the chiefs were men, it’s noteworthy that there are approximately twelve moais with feminine traits, such as pronounced breasts or sculpted vulvas.

One of the most well-preserved Moai, sculpted in basalt, is known as Hoa Hakananai’a and is found in the British Museum. This Moai shows all of the Rapanui beliefs’ symbology on its back.

Another year, another Bake Off, but Stormtrooper Bruce never gives up! In spite of never winning First Prize, in spite of some of the most atrocious prizes imaginable STB keeps entering because resistance is futile!

TK-1110: No offense, bro, but that is not the cake you had us taste test last week!

TK-432: Helloo, he does this every time. Bakes hundreds of cakes, makes us sample them until our tastebuds go numb, hours on end... and then in the end comes up with something completely different to enter!

STB: You do tend to exaggerate don't you. But I'll have you know, this is the cake you sampled last week. I just added extra layers and different decorations, that's all.

Chewie: Geois soipwsjme, hiesa doi grrtds!

Fett: Now Chewie, we do this every year. You know the only way you can get inside is wearing your ghost costume! And no talking allowed, otherwise you'll give yourself away!

STB: Uh oh, I think I hear the P's nephew inside, squealing about something! I bet he's behind all the Haunted Alley's decorations again this year.

TK-1110: I can remember when this used to actually be scary, now it's just kinda...

TK-432: Dude, are you kidding! There's that creepy little Jawa at the entrance. And did you read what's doing the photo booth?!? No way am I getting my picture taken with that thing!

STB: OK, settle down everyone, I think they're about to let us in. Remember, since attendance is mandatory, we schmooze around, and then as soon as the Bake Off is over, it's back to my quarters for Movie Night!

In Spite of Fire

Gregory Scott

Digital Abstract, 2025

A volatile current courses through this composition — orange flames curl into darkness, while black fissures resist with equal force. Yet, from within the tangle, a subtle momentum rises: not escape, but endurance.

In Spite of Fire explores the emotional geometry of conflict — where opposing forces collide not to destroy, but to forge. The palette burns with intensity, yet the forms surge upward, fractured but unyielding. It is a meditation on struggle without surrender, beauty found within the blaze.

In this work, fire is not the end — it is the crucible.

Red-winged Blackbird

Present throughout Canada during the nesting period, the Red-winged Blackbird nests in all the southern regions of Quebec and the Maritimes, and increasingly spends its winters in the northern United States. It prefers to settle in open and humid places, such as ditches, reed mace marshes and stream or river banks, but will also nest in drier terrain, in pasture and cultivated fields. Its diet varies with the seasons, but it feeds mainly on insects and cultivated seeds, including corn. Besides, it is a menace for farmers who find their fields ravaged by this bird. But in spite of everything, it still does them some great services, such as attacking the insects that destroy their newly-planted crops. The Red-winged Blackbird reaches 19 to 26 cm in length.

In spite of the name of this village, as best I can determine, Storm Desmond has not caused flooding here. Let's hope not.
