Many years ago and in another life, my work took me to almost every prison in the state. Some were grim places, others places of opportunity and positive energy. One such prison had a dairy, piggery, bakery and the prisoners farmed their own vegetables. They also had magnificent flower gardens.
Which brings me to today's theme, flowers from the prison garden. Taking photos of inmates was forbidden, but I managed to get a shot of this Spider who was serving a life sentence with no chance of parole. Apparently he had been the central figure in a web of deceit that claimed many unsuspecting victims. Do the crime and do the time, as they say.
One of the commonest spiders you can find around the house is the zebra spider, Salticus scenicus. You can find it sitting on the wall or on a window-frame but it is not so easy to spot. It is a tiny spider with a body size that doesn't exceed 8 millimetres. The zebra spider belongs to the jumping spiders. It does not make a web but stalks its prey. It will use a silk thread as an anchor. When it spots an insect it will slowly try to approach it. Now and then when it is out of the victim's sight the zebra spider will run. When it is within reach it will jump and paralyse the prey with its venomous 'jaws'.
To be able to capture prey like this jumping spiders rely on superb eye sight. Their eyes are truly remarkable. The front pair is the most impressive. They can be regarded as the best eyes you can find in any arthropod. They work as a telephoto lens. The retina inside the eye can move in 3 dimensions enabling the spider to look in all directions and focus on a subject. When you approach a jumping spider it will position itself so it can observe you. The 6 other eyes are positioned around the head for a 360 degrees vision.
THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT AND FAVES

Jumping spiders use their legs to pounce on their prey, which is typically other insects. Amazingly, jumping spiders don't have special leg muscles, like grasshoppers, to help them leap. They propel themselves by suddenly changing the blood flow in their body. Terminix
Jumping spiders or the Salticidae are a family of spiders. As of 2019, it contained over 600 described genera and over 6000 described species, making it the largest family of spiders at 13% of all species. Jumping spiders have some of the best vision among arthropods and use it in courtship, hunting, and navigation. Wikipedia
I bought this the other day, and will soon plant it in a pot outside. It's seen here on my kitchen counter, in a 55-frame focus stack. I blended the images with Helicon Focus.
I just about walked face first into this little spider trap trying to capture some floral images. This spider seemed to be in a bit of a contented mess... all exposed!
This spider decided to visit me last night I am sorry I had to hit it with the fly spray as it was inside my home. It was very big!

This small spider feels immortal in her own universe.
Thanks for taking time to comment, fave and look at my work. I really appreciate.
This is the Tiniest little spider! I didn't even know it was upside down until I downloaded and processed. What drew my attention were all the tiniest little water droplets in it's web. To give an idea as to it's size, that is the tip of a blade of grass that it's hovering over. Anita and I have a different sort of adventure planned for today. We are going to attempt to deliver a goat safely to a sanctuary about a two hour drive north of me. I've had a special cage built to fit in the back of my little "bubble truck" and the weather is fine today so here we go! LOL Will try to catch up with everyone tonight. :)
t is not often that these little 10mm jumping spiders sit still long enough for a focus stack. Luckily this one did. 10-image focus stack, tri-pod mounted. Even though this was at closest working distance (i.e. 270mm), they are so small that I still had to crop a fair bit.
Most spiders get bad reputations from the true dangerous spiders but no spiders are purposefully out to hurt humans. Most bites are in an act of self defense and their venoms true purpose is for preying for food.
[Adorable in my opinion ;) ]

Garden spider (Araneus diadematus) sitting on her web at Gloucester park. September is a great time to spot spiders outside and inside, although not everyone I know agrees with me that there's anything great about spiders!
