We are enjoying the ”mountain life” today at ”We’re Here!”. The theme inspired me to go hiking in the Vaca Mountains, north of Napa, California. It was a beautiful day.

Ithuriel’s Spear is a lovely blue California native I saw in abundance today.

This is the old lighthouse in Cape Spear. I was up there very early this morning (04:30) and while the sunrise wasn't spectacular, I managed to get what I think is a nice shot of these storm clouds moving in as the sun tries to burn them off (it failed by the way).

Three JPEGs tonemapped with Photomatix all taken at 10mm with a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 which resulted in some distortion along the sides but I needed a certain amount of distortion to get the sense that the clouds were moving inwards. Majority of the worst distortion corrected in CS3.

While the shots I got this morning weren't as good as I had hoped, I don't regret the early hours for anything. If you've never stood on the most Easterly point on the continent, watching the sun rise with the ocean breeze carrying the scent of fresh juniper to your nose while a pod of Minke whales breach and blow just out of sight, well, you have my sympathies.

Still - I wish it were sunny here more often :)

Once again you can enlarge the photograph and read the display for yourself. But in summary, these spears were made for hunting. That is not to say there may not have been any clan warfare over the millennia, but generally speaking the clans lived in peace with neighbouring people as each roamed their own lands.

The long spears were usually fashioned out of Tea Tree or Melaleuca and were used for throwing over distance. The short spears were made of more rigid hardwood, possibly Dogwood, and these were used for fishing or spearing prey at close quarters.

CAPE SPEAR is the most easterly point in North America. The sun rises here before it rises anywhere else on the continent, and we wanted to get there to see it, but the heavy cloud dimmed its appearance until it rose a bit and occassionally an opening showed some light. It was snowing as I took this, hence those splotches on the lens... Fortunately hubby had a hat and gloves in his jacket pocket to loan me, since I had not thought about bringing those on our short trip.

The oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador is located at the most easterly point of land in North America . It has been restored to its 1839 appearance and shows how a lightkeeper and his family might have lived in the mid-19th century. The Visitor Centre contains exhibits on the history of lighthouses and the tradition of lightkeeping. The site is surrounded by spectacular scenery and wildlife such as whales, seabirds and icebergs in season.

Faint but visible green glow of the northern lights from this weekend at Cape Spear. Unfortunately light Pollution from the city reduced how much you could see.

This morning at Cape Spear. Cold, windy and mostly clouds. Used the Blue-n-Gold filter for this shot.
