SpaceEngine - A free space simulation program that lets you explore the universe in three dimensions, from planet Earth to the most distant galaxies. Areas of the known universe are represented using actual astronomical data, while regions uncharted by astronomy are generated procedurally. Millions of galaxies, trillions of stars, countless planets - all available for exploration. You can land any planet, moon or asteroid and watch alien landscapes and celestial phenomena. You can even pilot starships and atmospheric shuttles.

This is a macro of a stamp from the Republica de Guinea Ecuatorial - commemorating Apollo 15. I thought it was neat that a massive an undertaking as the Apollo programme was, it was also immortalized on one of the smallest everyday objects (the humble stamp).

FYI time

The Apollo program was the United States spaceflight effort which landed the first humans on Earth's Moon.

Apollo 15 was the ninth manned mission in the American Apollo space program, the fourth to land on the Moon and the eighth successful manned mission. It was the first of what were termed "J missions", long duration stays on the Moon with a greater focus on science than had been possible on previous missions. It was also the first mission where the Lunar Roving Vehicle was used. The mission began on July 26, 1971, and concluded on August 7. NASA called it the most successful manned flight ever achieved. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_15

I needed to be at a work site today doing a Caracara (a threatened raptor) survey that always begins 30-minutes before sunrise. I was about 70 miles away from Cape Canaveral and knowing that the shuttle was launching this morning, I got there a few minutes early. I didn't get there in time to photograph the shuttle itself (although I saw it!), but I got to photograph the contrails it left later. As the sun rose, the sun rays on the contrails made for a cool effect. I'll post several of the shots I got over the next few days. The little puff of a cloud at the top of the photo is where the booster rockets separated from the shuttle.

The spaces at the backsides of some shops. Weird lost objects accumulate there and stay for long times. The ballpoint and the two balls of paper were still there after 6 months.

Careful space planning was required for this financial company's offices in Plantation Place, London. The brief requested an office layout that ensured good communication between departments and the final design is a untiy of architecture and art that creates a journey of events for the occupants as they move around the space.

This is the Space Shuttle Columbia after its very first flight in April of 1981. It has just arrived at Tinker AFB, Okla. on its way back to the kennedy Space Center. I remember that day very well. I was lucky because the shuttle was supposed to come through about a week earlier, and if it had I would've missed it because I was on an overseas deployment until two days before I took these pictures. It was estimated that 200,000 people through the base that day to see it.
