Today's challenge for ODC is one that my inital response was to ignore and not do - the topic?
'Our parents war'
i.e. something that depicted something they were passionate about,
or even wider possibilities..
The person who set this topic is supremely creative so I hope he'll forgive me for deciding that the freedom to think - whoever we are and whatever our history - is both simply and profoundly vital!
We are all part of this wider entity we call "Earth".
Access to sufficient open spaces to gain perspective matters!
It's not quite a space ship, but not quite a pod racer either, so I'm just calling it a space racer.
A polymer clay monster head sculpture. It has an eyelet for cording to be worn as a pendant. I like to use various beads, bits of glass or those cheesy plastic faceted gems to use as eyes and ther details...

Rethinking all the modeling for construction has been a superb challenge for me
WORST Model EVER! First, I lay on the ground to get an "UP" shot and he drools on me. Then he steps on my head (BTW, he has the grace of Captain Jack, yes, he staggers like a drunk) Then after 20 minutes I get about 50 shots that I HOPE at least one will be good only to have him looking over my shoulder the whole time and making grunting noise at all the pictures as they come up and shaking his head. "That's not my good side", "TOO close", "Is my BUTT really THAT big", "COME ON, I'M DROOLING!" and last but not least, "OMG I LOOK A HUNDRED AND TEN WITH ALL THOSE WRINKLES!"
So, I got on his "good" side, used a wider angle, cropped out his butt, magically removed the drool and used enough HIGH KEY to take the wrinkles out of Grandma Moses and her pet Shar-Pei! (Does anybody here really know just WHO is Grandma Moses anyway?) All just to get a shot that in NO WAY represents his REAL personality. If his nose goes any higher up he'll drown if it rains ... oh wait, that doesn't work here in the desert ... well, birds will nest on it then!

An homage to the classic space 886 set.
Lego system built onto a technic chassis. Has working steering and the radar dish rotation is driven through a differential from the rear wheels.
The 886+ is a single-seater exploration and reconnaissance vehicle, designed for zero-atmosphere, low gravity planetoids.
Power is supplied by a large 500kW replaceable lithium-ion battery pack located behind the drivers seat. In a 0.3G environment, this gives it an effective range of over 500KM and a top speed of 200KPH. Although this speed is inadvisable as there is no seatbelt.
The main air tanks have enough for a 24hr trip and there's an emergency 1 hour tank stowed underneath the dash.
It also comes equipped with a fast-burst RF transmitter, adjustable height steering wheel and a side tray for storage of moon soil samples.
Today's story and sketch "by me" began at five am, when I received a call from Rescue Randy saying he had received a call from his friends on Hondo an off shore oil platform in the Santa Barbara Channel, that a space craft with two escaped Martian Space Monkeys had crashed into the ocean just a few hundred feet from the platform. His friends knew Randy the most interesting living tissue crash test dummy would know what to do after a flying saucer crash. Randy at one time was stationed on the Hondo platform, as the official "ATD" anthropomorphic test device, until one night during a monsoon coming up the coast from Mexico, Randy was laying on an upper sun deck wearing a pair of white coveralls a cowboy hat and Oakley sunglasses, when he and the lounge chair were blown overboard. Randy as many of this Blog's readers know Randy laid five hundred feet at the bottom of the ocean for two years, before a group of Martian divers who were on a scuba diving vacation found Randy's barnacle covered body, rushed him to their friends at the "UCSB" institute, performed a Martianenstein reanimation procedure, making Randy the most interesting person in the Galaxy. But this morning when Randy got the call from Hondo he and JB were in another dimension on Hillry, the all female moon, a story that will have to be told another time. As you can see I responded to the call and located the two survivors, two Martian Space Monkeys had stolen the Galaxy Glider they were detailing for the Warden of The Flip Flop Resort, the Galaxies Toughest Maximum Security Prison. The two convicts were serving life sentences for hijacking a star freighter loaded with Moon Pies on route to Wonder World in Southern Florida. Martian Space Monkeys live to be up to three hundred years, and the two brothers are currently only twenty, so neither one considers washing space ships for another two hundred plus years would not be a promising career, so with a very good grasp of the gliders controls it was a near perfect take off, their trip through worm hole nine to Earth was easy, but the early exit sent them crashing into the Pacific Ocean. Below you can see they safely swam to shore, I will take them back to the man cave and wait for JB to pick them up and split the reward, until next time taa ta the Rod Blog.

I can't go out much, so I end up creating things that I can't photograph. That's...sort of pathetic. :(
The space koalas use this rover to launch satellites into orbit around their home planet. This specific launch is to test out their new eucalyptus based rocket fuel.
Ever wonder what a military version of the space shuttle would look like? I never did, until TR came up with a totally awesome contest. Then I thought fast, and came up with this little ship.
I did a bit of research on the X-Plane series, but none of it really stuck, so I ended up going off my own imagination, plus the rather cool tail from the X-15, because apparently this shape is more stable at hypersonic speeds.
But anyway... it fits a dude up front in moderate comfort, sports retractable lasers, spacial mines and a pair of nukes, safely hidden under heat-resistant panels, and it uses Solid Rocket Boosters and External Fuel Tanks to blast its way into space, just like its bigger, more friendly brother.
(I'm not gonna ask you all to be super-critical on this, it was a fairly quick and leisurely one-day build that leapfrogged its way to the top of my build queue. Just enjoy it for what it is, a cool little fighter spacejet thing.)
The Space Marine Dreadnought is a large, walking tank which carries powerful guns and lethal close combat weaponry, armoured to withstand all but the most powerful of enemy firepower. Pilots interred within Dreadnoughts are Marines who have suffered mortal wounds in battle, maimed and crippled beyond recovery - instead of being mercifully killed, the greatest heroes are instead given what is considered the honour of continuing to serve the Emperor past their normal life. Dreadnoughts can be armed with a wide range of weaponry. These include power claws, twin-linked autocannons, lascannons, heavy bolters or individual multi-meltas, plasma cannons or assault cannons. Built into the close combat weapons is often either a storm bolter or heavy flamer and one entire arm may be replaced with a missile launcher.

I started building on Friday night and completed this model last night (No, I did actually sleep 8hours in between ;)
I used Jerac's photos of his Dreadnought as a reference. Let me say that Jerac is a real Lego genius, the degree of 'engineering' in the model is impressive. I managed to clone his build from waist down, but then modified it to improve stability and strength. The torso I had to build with my own techniques, but using Jerac's exterior shell as a guide. All in all, I am very pleased with the result. Without Jerac's model, I doubt I could have designed a model of such accuracy.

Arsenal factory ( = Zavod Arsenal = Завод "Арсенал") is one of the oldest and most famous industrial factories in Soviet Union and later Ukraine. It is well known due to the famous Kiev cameras. The factory mainly specialized in optical components for the Soviet military and space programs. The factory also produced the professional grade photographic cameras but civil production played only a minor role in factory output.
The design of the Kiev-4 is firmly based on that of a classic pre-war German camera Zeiss Contax III. Kiev-4M is the modernized model of Kiev-4. All Kiev-4 produced between 1947-87.
(August 7, 1997) Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-85 mission launched from the Kennedy Space Center on August 7, 1997. The mission's objective was to launch the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere-Shuttle Pallet Satellite-2 (CRISTA-SPAS-2) free flyer.

On Machester Ave just past the I405.
Got up early to go see it while it was still dark. This is an HDR of 3 shots on a tripod, I took 4 shots at each speed, and blended each set of 4 to eliminate as many people walking in front of it as I could. I like how the policeman is just a ghost. Then blended in Photomatix4 and tone mapped using Exposure Fusion. Then in PS applied Nik Color Efex (Dark Contrast, Pro Contrast). In PS cleaned up the sky, curves, dodging and burning.

It's SPACE, but browner than ever! To my recollection, this is the first time I've built a brown fig-scale spaceship, and the first time I've ever used the orangey-brown colour at all. I mean, I don't even know the actual name of it, despite having had some since that Designer dinosaur set many years ago.
But anyway, I digress. You can probably tell that there's some TR inspiration going on here, because that guy is just too cool and I wanted to try his compact building style. But then I added my bizarre angular style, crazy internal structure, and ended up with this. I love it. Come to the NSC Leicester event, and I may even let you swoosh it.
Also, there was some discussion on AFOL 16+ that there's not enough "tough love" constructive criticism anymore, not since CSF died. So I invite you all to rip this to shreds, should you be so inclined. But constructively.
