Desde días no paro de escuchar de camino al trabajo "Dear Y´all", una selecta colección de demos que Eddie Hinton grabara entre finales de los 60 y a lo largo de los 70 en varios estudios (Quinvy, Fame, Muscle Shoals...), y que el sello inglés Zane publicó en 2000.

 

Recuerdo que en su momento, y tras leer varias críticas entusiastas, estuve tentado de comprarlo. Conocía a Eddie Hinton en su faceta de compositor y músico de sesión, e incluso tenía su fantástico Lp "Very Extremely Dangerous", pero al final no me hice con una copia, craso error. Mi único consuelo es haber subsanado esa equivocación a tiempo, más vale tarde que nunca...

 

Hablar de Hinton es hablar de un compositor, guitarrista e INTÉRPRETE excepcional. A mi modo de ver, ningún blanco ha llegado nunca a capturar la emoción y los matices absolutamente negroides de sus cuerdas vocales (los cantantes de R&B británicos de los 60 son un mal chiste comparados con el bueno de Eddie). Al igual que su amigo y colega Dan Penn, su talento como compositor y músico en los estudios de grabación no le dejaron prácticamente tiempo para desarrollar una sólida carrera en solitario.

 

Al margen de varios discos tardíos a principios de los 90 (Eddie murió en 1995) y el irregular "Letters from Mississipi" (editado sólo en Suecia y grabado en 1986 tras una época complicada), su discografía en vida se ciñe al mencionado "Very Extremely Dangerous". Para más inri, no presentó este disco en directo ni lo promocionó, y el sello Capricorn se fue a pique al poco de editarlo. Con todo, el LP es excepcional, un clásico crepuscular en los anales del soul sureño.

 

Quien lo escucha a ciegas y no está familiarizado con la figura de Hinton, ni en lo más remoto se puede imaginar que el cantante de los surcos sea blanco, confusión acrecentada por la portada (en la que aparece un negro ocultándose de un coche de policía en un callejón). Tampoco ayuda la semejanza en el nombre con Joe Hinton, intérprete de soul negro como un tizón.

 

Llegado a este punto, "Dear Y´all" es como un regalo caído del cielo, que el sello Zane ha completado en años recientes con otros dos cd´s de sesiones complementarios ("Playing around" y "Beautiful dream", este último publicado hace escasos meses).

 

El Cd contiene 19 temas y una mini entrevista. En ella, un lacónico Hinton confiesa que su disco favorito de cuantos había grabado como guitarrista de sesión es "Be Altitude: Respect yourself" de las Staple Singers, para Stax)

 

Ya dese el primer corte, Build your own fire, uno sabe que se va a topar con material de primera...Dangerous highway suena como Sam Cooke sin endulcorar; It´s all wrong but it´s alright parece una demo a medida de Otis, mientras que We got it y "Get Off in it" (que más tarde grabaría en "Very...") contienen el fraseo característico de Womack. Esas son, entre otras, algunas de sus influencias e inspiraciones, pero su manera de cantar es absolutamente natural, no se percibe ni un atisbo de que fuerce su voz en ningún momento.

 

Sin más acompañamiento que su guitarra y una harmónica, "Comin´ after you" es 100% R&B escuela John Lee Hooker, al tiempo que "Super Lover" suena más funky, grabada ya en 1980. De esta última sesión, es dificil no sucumbir a un tema como Hymn for lonely hearts ("Himno para corazones rotos") una emotiva canción que para si hubiese soñado componer un Tom Petty de turno.

 

El cierre con "Dreamer", tema que logró colocar como cara b de un single producido por Dann Penn en 1980, nos muestra un nuevo registro vocal de Hinton, que ya a estas alturas del CD podría cantarnos el listín telefónico que seguiría entusiasmando.

 

Ante esta sobredosis de talento, no queda otra opción que ir agenciándose sus otros dos CD´s para Zane...en esas estamos.

When we become dependent on an external source of food for our souls, we were extremely vulnerable, since all forms of dependence on fragile and lead to compromise of principles and values, only to gain acceptance of others.

 

Taking care of yourself is the first step to being a strong self-esteem, as this is the best guarantee against deprivation of affection. Begging for love reduces the chances that awakened the admiration and respect for others are essential conditions for this feeling can flourish.

 

When, instead, we stand before the world confidently, expressing our best qualities safely, we become much more attractive and can give any concession to have the love and admiration of others. They will simply come as a reflection of our own light.

 

"Never think in terms of others that they love you. This is a wrong attitude, rooted in childhood. A child just waiting to be loved. And, of course, is natural for a child, because as a child can love? A child of one day old - how can she love? She can not even hold the mother's finger. She can not fix your eyes on the mother, everything is cloudy. She does not know who the mother and who is who. How you can expect it love? It just takes love.

 

Little by little she learns one thing: what others have to love it. That's good childhood, but one has to go beyond - and then you become an adult. A man becomes an adult on the day he begins to feel that now he has to love. It's not a matter of someone to love him.

 

... You're not a kid anymore. You are behaving in an infantile pattern. Start loving. The more you love, the more you will see that more people are coming up to you to love him, because love attracts love like hatred attracts hatred.

 

If you hate, people will hate him. If you love, people will love it. But do not worry if others are loving or not. Simply love. Love is such a pleasurable activity - who cares if there is any return or not? It's like singing. You sing and delight. If anyone applauds, great. If no one applauds, is a question of them. Do you delight in the same way.

 

Start loving. And do not ask for love. Love is a natural consequence ..... He's cute. It's a gift. He comes because all existence is full of love. Not because you have ability, not because you have some value as he comes to you. No, he comes to you because the whole existence is full of love. Existence is made of the stuff called love. It's just like the air around it. You simply breathe in and out and that continues.

 

So forget about deserving. Start to love, and you'll see the love coming, thriving. He has a thousand times more. Simply share and continue to meditate. "

Aqui nas terras tupiniquins, o rock e a MPB ganharam uma sobrevida com o Mangue Beat e o som regional repaginado, ganhando cada vez mais a mídia e adeptos, os caras pintadas eram a nova força da juventude pós-Diretas Já, interessada não só no próprio umbigo, mas também no que surgia longe dos grandes centros, como Raimundos, Chico Science, Nação Zumbi, e a bandeira da legalização da maconha com o Planet Hemp.

 

Retro - Prepare-se para uma viagem ao tempo, da discomusic dos anos 70, passando pelo rico anos 80 e duas horas de sets só com musicas dos anos 90.

Soul Serenade (Columbia) by the Derek Trucks Band is one of the best albums I have heard this year(2003). It won't matter how this album is classified, either, because it has it all. For those who liked Allman Brothers guitarist Trucks on his eponymous band's major-label debut, 2002's Joyful Noise, will find this CD to be even more impressive. Soul Serenade was actually recorded three years ago, before Joyful Noise, but is being released only now. It's been worth the wait because the Derek Trucks Band is hitting on all cylinders from start to finish.The album begins with covers from two musical music legends-King Curtis and Bob Marley. Trucks uses "Soul Serenade" by Curtis and "Rasta Man Chant" by Marley to deliver one of the more exhilarating musical moments of the year. Trucks' guitar-sling and the fine work of his band show that the difference between the rock-steady beat of Jamaican reggae and Afro-American soul is so slight that it hardly matters. The next track, "Bock to Bock," is even better. Bassist Todd Smallie and drummer Yonrico Scott set the table for the band to deliver a powerful yet subtle swinging blues number. Trucks is on the case with his ax, and his band stays tight and focused at all times, letting the guitarist roam where he needs. The magic of this album doesn't end there although the first two songs will leave you awestruck.The Derek Trucks Band then pumps the soul classic "Drown in My Own Tears," with Gregg Allman providing a heavy, blues-drenched vocal, which is followed by a tricky version of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue." By this point you will have no doubt about the importance of Derek Trucks and his band. They defy category. They challenge those preconceived conclusions that often muzzle music, and they will leave you wondering why this album had been held up for so long.-Brian Gilmore For More 5 Star Reviews Soul Serenade

A portrait of the very talented Gary Burns from a gig at Krafty Brew in Leith tonight.

 

I first ,et Gary in 2006, while photographing a gig featuring the Dead Sea Souls (the band he was in), who were terrific.

 

I crossed paths with the band several times over the years. Sadly, DSS (as they were also known!) are no more (but in an entirely amicable way).

 

Gary is now working on some solo music and will have an EP getting released later this year.

Recupero un extenso artículo que escribí hace 2 años repasando la escena independiente

de entonces. Aunque obviamente no es de rabiosa actualidad, me ha parecido interesante

incluirlo en Soul Portrait. Lo ideal sería completarlo con un dossier sobre lo acontecido en

2004 y 2005, pero la vagancia me impide ponerme a ello.
