By mid afternoon there was often little still to be seen but this day there were still a few good butterflies around.

A really exciting sighting for me though it seems that I had photographed one before - on my very first Neotropical visit.

This bust is a Roman replica depicting Socrates. The head is set on a shaft with stump-like arms. It seems that this statue is a Roman replica of a Greek original dated back to the fourth century BCE. The Roman influence is obvious in the realistic features, as well as the hairdress and the beard style; while the Greek influence appears in the round face and the meditating look which has a touch of perfectionism.

Since the vast majority of the original Greek portraits were lost, collections of portraits of famous Greeks were made by Roman intellectuals and aesthetes in the late Classical and Hellenistic times to adorn their houses, libraries and gardens. The bust became a favourite form of portraiture among the Romans.

Socrates was the first great Greek philosopher, Athenian by birth. He lived during the City's golden age. He was born around 470 BCE and died in 399 BCE. As a young man, he studied the then fashionable philosophies of what is now known as the "pre-Socratic philosophers" who, in their different ways, were trying to understand the world around us. Socrates questioned what effect did nature have on our lives. He wanted to know how far the Sun was from the Earth. Our behaviour could, in no way, be affected by such knowledge, we needed to know how to conduct our lives? What is right? What is just?

Socrates did not think he knew the answers to these questions, but he realized that no one else knew them either. When the oracle at Delphi declared him to be the wisest of men, it meant nothing to him as he was convinced that he barely knows anything since he has not reached the answers he was seeking. So he went around Athens raising the basic questions of morality and politics with anyone who would listen to him, people gathered around him wherever he went, especially the eager young. He was teaching people to question everything; he became a highly controversial figure, much loved, but also much hated.

In the end, the authorities arrested him on the charge of corrupting the young, and not believing in the gods of the city. He was put on trial, and condemned to die by poison. The detailed story of his trial and death is one of the most inspiring tragedies in the history of human philosophy; he left no books which men could study following his death. He taught his followers to question and argue, to use discussion as a mean of reaching the truth, and always to seek the “good”.

Career: -

Unanimity on a single survey conducted in 2006 by Score Magazine to choose the "team of all time" of the Corinthians. Again, the only unanimously, on a survey of experts to choose the top ten idols of the history of the Corinthians. Elected in 1983 the best South American player of the year. Chosen by FIFA in 2004 as one of the 125 best living players in history and considered by many specialized publications under review, such as CNN, World Soccer and Score, as one of the greatest players of all time, was an athlete known for his elegant style. A character of the player who scored their way through the football was his skill and wise use of the heel. But it was a complete player, scoring a lack of head and out-of-area frequently. Gave assistance to his fellow perfect score many goals.

It was revealed by the Botafogo club Ribeirão Preto, where he was considered a phenomenon from the beginning, as it almost did not train due to attend medical school at the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (USP). In that time he was a champion of the first round of Campeonato Paulista League in 1977 and scorer. Also stood out in the Brazilian Championship, author of a famous goal against Santos heel in Vila Belmiro.

Socrates will anchor Corinthians in 1978, rebuilding the team with his former teammate Gerard Butter. But his great companions attack this team would Palhinha Casagrande and friend. Socrates only agreed to play in earnest after he graduated from medical school. In the Brazilian national team debut in 1979.

It was one of the stars of two of the biggest squads in world football: aSeleção Brazilian Football World Cup 1982 and the Corinthians the 80's. He had fine performances, scored two beautiful goals in the extremely difficult games against the USSR and Italy, and showed all his class. But it was not enough for Brazil took the championship.

In the 1986 World Cup was again in action, but had been optimally. This would also marked by wasted penalty against France in the decision that disqualified Brazil.

After a brief and disappointing spell at Fiorentina, hampered by the fellow who suspected that manipulate results, Socrates returned to Brazil to end his career where he would act in Flamengo, Santos and Botafogo in Ribeirão Preto. In 2004, following an invitation from a friend, he participated in a match with the shirt Garfoth Town, eighth division team in England.

Outside of football, Socrates has always maintained an active political participation, both in matters relating to the welfare of the players about the current issues in the country. Direct I campaigned in 1984 and was one of the main creators of movimentoDemocracia Corinthian, who claimed for the players more freedom and more influence in the administrative decisions of the club.

PERSONAL LIFE: -

In August 2011, Socrates was admitted to ICU of Israeli Hospital Albert Einstein because of an upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused porhipertensão portal. Also in 2011, Socrates was hospitalized again due to an alleged food poisoning, which eventually turn into a severe septic shock due to their already poor health condition. [1] The player died at 4:30 morning of December 4, 2011, due to septic shock.

Most of the greatest philosophers and thinkers of the Western world up to the 16th Century are included in the 'School of Athens' fresco. This group of figures include (from right) Socrates, Aeschines and Alcibiades.

Socrates with his prominent forehead looks much like he does on surviving ancient busts. He is expounding on something to Aeschines the famous Orator (dress in green and blue), and a helmeted and armoured soldier, usually identified as Alcibiades.

Aeschines (389–314 BC) was a Greek statesman and famous Orator. Alcibiades (450–404 BC) was an Athenian general and politician during the Peloponnesian War. Some identify this soldier figure as Alexander the Great, who while not a philosopher, had been the most famous historical figure of the ancient world and a student of Aristotle.

My dad used to paraphrase Socrates by saying " Don't bring shame to your name boy". I've always tried to honor his request.

I cannot even describe how much I love this quilt. to me it's like a study of contrasting themes:

-symmetry and asymmetry

-predictability and randomness

-consonance and dissonance

I could go on, but I'll spare you the strange journey into my psyche.

I'll just say that Chawne is the best ever, and I can't believe she quilted something so amazing for me. did I mention she hand sewed the backing? holy dedication batman!

So thanks C, I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
