Visiting me for lunch with her momma yesterday baby Socrates would stop every so often to stare at and think about what impresses her. This occurs often, she always wants to know the how and why. She knows I’m the weak link and food will find its way into her mouth, so she bides her time and waits. A tiny drool is visible at the corner of her mouth. She also “shops” in my house and ran off with a tiny seal carving my dad gave to my mother. We never even saw her take it, The noises she makes of grunts and whistles is hilarious. Always entertaining like her cousin baby reptilian shapeshifter she is a joy.

"We Are Nomads, We Are Dreamers" by artist Suchitra Mattai

From the park's website:

"We are nomads, we are dreamers is a solo exhibition of newly commissioned works by Suchitra Mattai that celebrates the migratory oceanic journeys of past, present, and future diasporic communities. Inspired by the Park’s position along the East River, which flows into the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, this exhibition features a series of soft sculptures made from vintage saris collected from women of the South Asian diaspora. The exhibition’s title reflects upon transatlantic migration experiences, including Mattai’s ancestors who traveled from India to British Guiana (now Guyana) as indentured laborers in the early twentieth century, as well as the artist’s own personal migrations.

At the center of the Park, six futuristic pods, reminiscent of continental forms, emerge from the landscape, reflecting the dynamic interplay of the shifting sky and ecology. Draped in vibrantly colored saris, meticulously hand-woven together, these monumental forms transcend static existence, subtly evolving and adapting within their waterfront ecosystem. Here, new living beings and elements like sun, rain, and wind interact with the textiles, enriching the pre-existing lives embedded in the saris, which carry the memories of the women who wore them. These artifacts from the future serve as an ever-evolving testament to the human experience of migration and adaptation—a monument to the journey of becoming. "

I hope all of you had an amazing Christmas and spend some great time with you loved ones. We had always passed through the two northern most state parks in the Big Sur coastline in search of the more epic roadside vista points. From the pacific coast highway theparks don’t look as interesting as the southern part of Big Sur where the road is hugging the rugged coastline. This shot was taken at the beautiful Point Lobos state park on our first day. Due to the state preserve rules we had to get out before sunset and we didn’t have a lot of clouds to work with but the setting sun during golden hour provided some beautiful lighting on the coastline and the haystacks near the coast.

I used a longer focal length to make this shot and my goal wa just to get the golden light and the little bit of fog that was starting come in. No filters were needed here as the sidelight was just magnificent. If you zoom into the image you will be able to notice that the rocks are teaming with wildlife. I missed my telephoto lens sorely here but thankfully the longer end of my 70-200 came in handy.

Hagia Sophia was first named "Megale Ekklesia" (The Great Church) as it was the largest church in Constantinople (Istanbul today). The historian Socrates indicated that the church was named Sophia during the reign of Emperor Constantius. The name given to the church symbolized the second divine attribute of the Holy Trinity. Originally, Sophia, which means "Holy Wisdom", was a name given to Christ by 4th century theologians. For centuries it stood at the heart of two of the world's great religions: To Christians it was Hagia Sophia, Church of the Holy Wisdom, mother church of the Orthodox faith, and of the thousand year old Byzantine Empire. To Muslims, it became Ayasofya Camii, Mosque of Holy Wisdom and jewel of Istanbul. Today its one of the two most important Museums in Turkey.

As for this shot, it is all about location !! When choosing hotel in Istanbul I made sure that at least one blue hour (particularly the morning one) could be taken from a place as close to the hotel as possible. At the end this shot was taken from the hotel's top terrace, therefore I only had to go 2 floors up. I only wish all morning blue hour shoots would be so easy, plus that delicious breakfast with such a view after I finished with the photography was just an added bonus.

Probably there was a city jail. Socrates probably died here. He probably looked in this direction. Last. He was not acceptable for Athens. He was not acceptable for democracy!
