ABOUT:

The 3in1 Neo Classic space set proposal "Antares" does not feature only neo classic space but the antagonists as well: Blacktrons. Since it is a 3in1 set I needed to use less black in order to reuse the bricks for other neo classic space smodels as well. So I revised the colors in a more dark gray/black look.

The Blacktron spaceship features 4 rotable thrusters, 2 retractable landing feet and a cockpit that may be repositioned (I will show that in another pic), making it look aggressive.

Please support this neo classic space / Blacktron 3in1 set proposal at LegoIdeas.

Early, possibly NAA-manufactured 1/100 scale Saturn V Command/Service Module.

Total height of the CSM ‘stack’ is 6.6875”, to include the gap between the Command Module (CM) & Service Module (SM). There is a larger center pin & smaller off-centered pin that protrude from the convex interface with the base of the CM, apparently, to make sure the capsule is properly oriented? Most likely, the model has not been assembled in ~55 years, and I wasn’t about to - literally & figuratively - push the issue.

The CM is definitely of wood, with meticulously hand-painted powder blue windows.

The black ‘Launch Escape Tower’ portion may be of the same single piece of wood as that of the CM, as I see no seam, hairline crack/separation, etc., that I would’ve expected after half-a-century. Faint hand-drawn/painted diagonal & horizontal lines representing the latticework structure of the real thing are still visible…cool.

The upper ‘Launch Escape Motor’ segment, possibly/likely also of wood, looks to be glued to the tower.

The SM is solid - notably heavier than one would expect - of either wood or resin I assume. The SPS nozzle is also solid, distinguishably machined, with a multitude of minute striations visible. Aluminum maybe?

Obviously, one of the RCS thruster quadrants is missing, which appear to be a combination of metal pins (nozzles), as rust appears to be present on most of them, which look to be embedded/inserted into possibly resin quadrant ‘hubs’. Additionally, the aft base of the SM also features an off-centered pin (for insertion into the S-IVB stage) and is indentation stamped with the numeral “25”.

Unfortunately, the incredibly prolonged contact with the inner cellulose padding of the storage/transport crate has resulted in the impregnation of large portions of the model, to include the other side of the SM, with the insidious material.

I assume a non-destructive removal of it from the affected surfaces is problematic, if not impossible. Damnit.

An assuredly early & rare specimen of a contractor (NAA)-manufactured Saturn V model.

“A model of a proposed reusable space vehicle for the post-1974 period shows one possible design of the planned vehicle. Two large propellant tanks could be attached to each side of the center spacecraft; the tanks would be jettisoned after use and the manned spacecraft would return to earth. Two separate six-month study contracts will be awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; one to be managed by the Marshall Space Flight Center and the other by the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Tex. Bids for conceptual design studies have been received from Lockheed Missile and Space Corp., McDonnell Douglas Astronatics Co., Boeing Co., North American Rockwell Corp., Martin Co., General Dynamics-Convair and James P. Natland, an individual. With the model is Charles Akridge of the Marshall Center’s Advanced Systems Office.”

Before going any further: James P. Natland??? Surely, accepting or entertaining anything from individuals, for a possible government contract was/is a rarity, no? Is that how Elon Musk got into the space game?

What little I've found is that a Mr., probably Dr. Natland, was a nuclear...physicist(?) for Boeing. Maybe not as uncommon as I ignorantly suspect. Interesting nonetheless.

AKA the ‘STAR Clipper’. This looks so dern tootin’ cool…although I would’ve expected wind tunnel testing, particularly WRT that tri-convergent nose area, to have ruled such a configuration out. 'STAR' is capitalized because the good folks at the below cited links capitalized it, which is good enough for me.

And, as you might imagine, with a design such as this, photos, diagrams & write-ups abound online. I personally consider the following to be authoritative & kick-ass:

Came across this as well. A wonderful amalgamation of STAR Clipper stuff:

Also. I seriously covet this model:

I used the same approach as kim, but I decided to use a texture, since most of my photos came out over-exposed.
