SM Pride was the annual day of action for Countdown on Spanner, the defence group set up to protest about the prosecution of 16 gay men for acts of consensual sado-masochism. The BDSM community argued that if we have the legal right to have our ears pierced or to be tattooed, we also have the same right to make other decisions about what we do with our bodies in a sexual context.
SM Pride achieved support across the gender and sexuality spectrum from gays, lesbians, bisexuals and heterosexuals.
As a result the Spanner Trust was set up: www.spannertrust.org/documents/spannerhistory.asp and is still active today.
