Happy Macro Monday! Meet my meatball lunch to satisfy the theme of "forks". Wishing you a lovely day and I am happy to report I didn't burn anything with the incense other than my lungs.
Missouri Pacific GP38-2s No. 2024 and 2030 pull a train of empty hoppers from Geneva Steel through the outskirts of Lehi, Utah the afternoon of Feb. 28, 1986. While the terrain looks relatively flat, the 1.18% grade is taxing the relatively low horsepower 38s, pulling at a steady 15 mph on the approach to 4812 ft. Mount Summit.
I had a fun evening with a few photographer friends a few nights ago. Incense cones were placed inside the skull creating the smoke. I added a texture to the image.

A controlled Prairie burn which helps control weed and invasive species from growing. You really can't do every year in the same place or could wipe out native plants.
Canadian National C40-8M #2418 smokes it up coming out of the siding at Acworth, GA with CSX ethanol train K421 after a meet with northbound Q144.
A westbound BNSF vehicle train thunders through Mullan Tunnel at Blossburg, Montana, on September 6, 2003. The train is led by a point helper of Montana Rail Link EMD SD45-2 No. 311 and former Southern Pacific (obviously) SD45 No. 7555. MRL calls these point helpers “unmanned” helper sets as they utilize the road crew that was once in the cab of BNSF 8207 upon arriving at Helena. These locomotives are normally set out on the west side of the pass at Elliston, for another train or helper set to pick up and take back to Helena. They smoke it up pretty good coming through the confining bore at the summit of Mullan Pass.
This was taken from Surprise Corner Viewpoint, a short walk from Banff town centre.
The Banff Springs Hotel is nestled in the foreground and in the distance is the Rimrock Hotel. The smoke is probably from a controlled burn.

"I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
That's the impression that I get"

Smoke in the sky from a nearby burnoff made for interesting textures as the sun was going down.
South Cant. New Zealand.
To clean our spice grinder Gay loaded it with coarse salt and powered it up for some 30 seconds. When the lid came off she noticed how the pulverized and heated salt crystals went airborne forming these intricate patterns. She *suggested* how I might want to photograph it and the rest was just pure fun. : ))
P.S. Pixel peepers will be able to easily see how this "smoke" is made up of a many very small specks of salt.

I tried a couple of new things with photo editing today and was surprisingly happy with the end results. It's not perfect by any means, but it was yet another learning point. [read more...]
