When does street art end and fine art begins? It is hard to make that distinction anymore, and the pieces seen at ABHK certainly reflects the trend.

For over 40 years, two artists in the UK collaborated under the name “Gilbert & George,” which is comprised of Gilbert Proesch (b. 1943-09-17 in San Martin de Tor, Italy) and George Passmore (b. 1942-01-08 in Plymouth, UK).

This mixed media painting titled “Jacksie” were done in 2008, when both artists are well in their 60s, but there is no shortage of WTF in their work—which has elements similar to that of graffiti seen on the streets of London except that they are shown in well known galleries.

It is awesome to find a partner in crime—life long marriage in art. Sweet.

Designed by Arquitectonica, the building complexes at 貝沙灣 Residence Bel-Air located at 數碼港 Cyberport feature many of the key ingredients in Hong Kong’s luxury residential properties, as well as some WTF sceneries:

+ “風水洞 Feng Shui Hole”, the hole in the middle of the building which allows the dragon to fly through.

+ High density which soars to the sky. Higher density means more space around for scenery. This allows everyone to have a good view.

+ Ocean view. No one wants to be looking at humans when they are indoors. Well, I don’t.

+ Clothes hanging dry on the balcony. Hong Kong does not have a lot of space so everyone regardless of their income level dry their clothes outside. Truly WTF, yes I know.

+ Swimming pool with a view. This seems almost standard. There is a swimming pool at my place, too. But alas they are always surrounded by buildings so if you are super-private like me you will never swim there. Public swimming pools actually are more private because at least no one can see you.

Pictured is the view from the balcony of one of the apartments at 貝沙灣 Residence Bel-Air. Stitched together using 16 RAW captures with the 6D + 17-40 f/4L, processed with Autopano Giga 3.0 and Lightroom 4.

More work from A.R. Penck (Ralf Winkler) seen at the Art Basel Hong Kong which I liked.

The primitive cave paintings at Lascaux are often considered by art historians as the beginning of art, and in many ways Penck’s stick figures and his flat and pictographic symbols resemble that of the past as well. In some ways they remind me of the drawings by Keith Haring, but obviously Penck came from a completely different line.

It looks almost like an artefact justifying the “ancient aliens” theory by many ufologists, but of course it was painted rather recently. It is fantastic though.

The elevated footbridge in Central near Exchange Square. Here you see one expect about pano which makes things interesting—it is possible to capture the same person twice. The guy on the right is the same person walking in the middle ground. The seams are not perfect because it is handheld but it shows just how extensive the footbridge network is in Hong Kong.

Chinese imperial roof decoration (檐獸 yán shòu) was only allowed on official buildings of the empire. Along the ridges, near the corner, a row of small figures is placed. The imperial yellow glaze is reserved for the emperor.

At the tail of the procession will be an imperial dragon, representing the authority of the state. At the head of the procession will be a man riding a Phoenix, one legend suggests that this represents a minon of the emperor who grew greedy for power and was hanged from the roof gable for treason.

In between will be mythical beasts, usually an odd number of them. The mythical beasts are set to pounce upon the man and devour him should he stray from performing his duties with faithfulness and rectitude.

Pictured is the imperial roof decoration seen at the Hall of Supreme Harmony (太和殿), featuring the maximum nine mythical beasts. The order of the beasts are: 1. evil-dispelling bull, 2. courageous goat-bull (獬豸), 3. wind-summoning fish (狎魚), 4. storm-summoning fish (狎魚), 5. mythical lion (狻猊), 6. auspicious seahorse, 7. heavenly horse, 8. lion, and 9. chiwen (鴟吻, a son of dragon). Additionally, an immortal guardian (行什, hangshi) is in front of the dragon holding to a sword like a cane.

A few people have commented that the previous motion series was a bit “sinister,” [1] so here I give you another rendering, where I was completely oblivious to the surrounding even now I am logically aware of my intention…

There are still a few of these which I haven’t gotten the time to work on but thanks to my data serialisation methodology I can still find it in my 100,000+ RAW Lightroom catalog…

The Public Domain Review continues to dump out bizarre images onto its archive.

Shown here is a Japanese woodcut by Kamekichi Tsunajima titled “Ryūkō eigo zukushi”, or “A Fashionable Melange of English Words”. The print shows images of animals, activities and objects each with their Japanese and English names. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) some spelling mistakes have given rise to some interesting new activities such as “Refreshiug” and “Cuting Rice”, and the “Gaot”, “Hoise” and “Tea Po”. The introduction of activities (including the very Zen-like “Looking Moon”) give an interesting take on the often more object-orientated Western equivalents. Also worth noting the interesting additions of “Cross Child” rather than simply “Child” , and “Blank Book” rather than “Book”.

Ernie: Hey look there are some red stripes which matches my shirt, let’s go and take some photos!

Bert: Oh you are right it does, but did you know that it actually means something.

Ernie: Really? What does it mean?

Bert: It is an equal sign. It stands for equality—marriage equality to be exact.

Ernie: Marriage equality? I thought that everyone can get married as long as they love each other.

Bert: Well, apparently not—some gay people in America cannot because some people think that it is not sanctioned by religions.

Ernie: That makes no sense! We should support it! We have been married for so long. We should show them what love is like!

After taking some 15-minute shots, I thought why not take some 30-minute ones, and so here it is. Unlike the purple one which was shot from the horizon [1], this one was shot from the 27th floor near my bedroom window.

For this one I left the white balance at the “natural” settings, so you can see that normally the sky is just a very reddish glow . I also had a 15-minute shot for this, and for that capture you can see the clouds more clearly. But for pure illustration of the mood, you can’t beat the sky on this capture.

There is this odd streak in the middle of the frame, which I think might be a boat, but I was not looking at this capture the whole time I was photographing this so I cannot be sure.

This might eventually be reprocessed as black and white. As you can see there is really no “correct” way of setting the white balance on these night long exposure shots, which might be precisely the reason that most photographers just process them as black and white.

Two people face each other. A man on the right sitting on his own giving a glance. The woman does not gaze back—she is too busy texting on her cell phone. In between there are some form of lights—I do not know what they are. Perhaps they are traffic signs. They could also be a reference to the LED pulses of electronic devices. The three paintings are grouped together. They are connected yet separated.

Contemporary Chinese art is interesting to me as they deal with something both familiar and distant. Growing up in Hong Kong, I am well versed in Chinese history, but that of modern communist China is one which is unfamiliar to me. Chinese contemporary works root from something completely alien because the culture of Hong Kong is also very different than that in China.

A graduate of China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, WANG Jianwei 汪建伟 (汪建偉 b. 1958 Sichuan Province, China) is a Chinese artist best known for his installation and video works. ‘Connection’ (鏈接) and ‘relationship’ (關聯) have been the key phrase in his vocabulary.

Georgia Russell (b. 1974) is a Scottish artist who slashes, cuts and dissects printer matters, music scores, maps, books, newspapers and photographs into beautiful sculpted forms.

This particular piece caught my attention mostly as it bears resemblance to African masks—though its execution is abstract in nature. In some ways it reminded me of the “OMG LOL” sculpture by Michael Mandiberg [1] which I saw in 2009 at Eyebeam in New York. Both use a large hard cover book as their raw materials; both cut them out and turn them into something else. But Manidberg’s piece is one which talks specifically to the technological generation which we are in, where as Russell’s piece is organic in its formation and subconsciously references history in my own memory.

Another fine example of how an everyday object transformed through pure imagination into one such is fantastically extraordinary. Crazyisgood. SML Love.

Georgia Russell studied Fine art at Aberdeen University and the Royal College of Art and is a visiting lecturer at universities and art schools.

A man running on red tracks in black shorts and cyan sneakers.

I had originally not wanted to post this because it was shot without a model release. But it is a perfect collage of forms + human forms. So what the heck—if he happened upon my Flickr stream the worse is that he would ask me to put it down for good. Not a big problem.

Maybe what I should do in the future is find a runner who can sign me a model release but I honestly do not know where to find people to do TFCD in Hong Kong.

The National Concert Hall (國家音樂廳) is a performing arts venue at Liberty Square in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan. The buildings, though modern in function and purpose, recall traditional elements of Chinese palace architecture. The building and its twin, the National Theater (國家戲劇院) located directly across, were completed in 1987.

Clockwise from top left: Strattera, Viagra, Panadol, Nicorette. Yes these are all prescriptions.

Why do I get Viagra? Well one of the reasons I don't like to take Strattera aka the “chill pill for when interfacing with humans” is that although it halves my speed and thus make it possible for me to talk to humans in their “normal speed,” it has very severe sexual side effects. It is very challenging.

People who take psychiatric meds would understand this. Many anti-depressants have this side effect mainly because of their specific mechanism of actions (MOA). So it is rather wtf sometimes. You take meds to help you adjust your mood so you don't get depressed but then you would then completely suck in bed.

Not too good ey? But get this—the blue pill pretty much turns you into a sex god and seriously ever since I get these prescriptions there are more than enough men in New York lining up to “play” with me. Oh the crazy insane world of fun when you are certifiably crazy—like I said, Crazyisgood! :)

A collage of forms seen at the Ma On Shan Sports Grounds. Bright colors seem to be a main stay in sporting arena regardless of location in the world. Blue and yellow stripes always work. It looks like an Adidas retro sneaker to me. The circular rubber band and the curvature from the seats add a little bit of contrast without dominating.

If I could paint, this is what I would paint as well. As such this is part of the SML Paintings series also.

“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.”—Hofmann

Hans Hofmann (March 21, 1880 – February 17, 1966) was a German-born American abstract expressionist painter. He believed that abstract art was a way to get at the important reality.

Starting at a young age, Hofmann gravitated towards science and mathematics. At age sixteen, he started work with the Bavarian government as assistant to the director of Public Works where he was able to increase his knowledge of mathematics. He went on to develop and patent such devices as the electromagnetic comptometer, a radar device for ships at sea, a sensitized light bulb, and a portable freezer unit for military use. Even with such great abilities in science and mathematics, Hofmann became interested in creative studies, beginning educational art training after the death of his father.

Hofmann’s art work is distinguished by a rigorous concern with pictorial structure, spatial illusion, and color relationships.

Some captures have such a strange color cast that I often process them in black and white. But then if I wish to keep the color—as in the sunset in this scene—then I do it inside Photoshop’s Lab mode.

Unlike RGB process, Lab separates color information with the lightness curve, thus allowing you to tweak the curve to taste without affecting the colors. Then you can use the color curves: a for magenta/green and b for yellow/blue to independently tweak things to what you wish for. Lightroom also has some independent color controls but I could never get it to be exactly the way I like it as in Photoshop.

The Kowloon skyline from the vantage point on the 6th floor of Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wan Chai, where I had dinner last night.

The tallest building to the left is International Commerce Centre (ICC) in West Kowloon, a superskyscraper in Hong Kong which is also the world’s 5th tallest. In the center is the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, together with the original Peninsula Hotel, with the Intercontinental Hotel (the original Regent) on the right. On the far right, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) in Wan Chai on the Hong Kong Island side.

Stitched together using 16 RAW capture. Also handheld, but as you can see, handheld pano is doable when objects are far away.

These Chinese imperial roof decorations were seen at the 慈誠宮 Cíchéng Gōng (lit: “Temple of Compassion and Sincerity”). Although the temple was built in 1796, the color of the figures remain vibrant and theirs details demonstrate expert craftsmanship.

Two competing guilds of woodcarvers were invited to work at the temple, which might reason why the wood carves look particularly daring and intricate. It is considered a “Level-3 Historic Site” (三級古蹟) in Taiwan.

Every weekend, crew teams from different universities practice at Tolo Harbour. Pictured is the team from The University of Hong Kong (HKU 香港大學), noted by its abbreviation 港大 seen on the tank top of of of its crew members. According to their Facebook page [1], the club has been around since 1981.

I am particularly drawn to the delicate lines of the boats as well as the patterns each cox makes on the water surface.

I have attempted multiple times to capture them on video but it is fairly hard with my current setup. The 7D combined with the 100-400mm gives a combined equivalent focal length of 640mm on the zoomed-out side. This means any minute movement will result in camera shake.

At the moment I do not have any geared head and anyone with a ball head knows that getting precise positioning in a quick action shot is not really doable. I guess I will just have to get closer to the surface — but by the time I reach the ground floor they are usually gone. Tricky business.

Technically speaking, this does not really need to be a panorama stitch. But I am obsessed with details, and if I use a wide angle lens to photograph this then the resulting resolution will not be as high as I want it to be. Also, what I pictured in my head is the sheer width of the ship.

And so I made my decision to photograph 10 full-resolution RAW captures at 400mm to be stitched together after the fact. At this resolution, you can clearly make out each bolt on the aircraft as well as the rain drops on the net—details which would likely be lost if a single wide angle capture was made.

Dingling (定陵 Dìng Lìng; literally: "Tomb of Stability"), one of the tombs at the Thirteen Tombs of the Ming Dynasty site, is the tomb of the Wanli Emperor (萬曆). It is the only Ming tomb to have been excavated. It also remains the only intact imperial tomb, of any era, to have been excavated since the founding of the People's Republic of China, a situation that is almost a direct result of the fate that befell Dingling and its contents after the excavation.

Pictured is one of the tunnels inside the tomb. It is very eerie. It reminded me somewhat of the Eastern State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania which I visited a long while back.

No one can say that they do not enjoy receiving the “likes” on their feed. But I enjoy the comments more—comments which explain why they like or dislike something. I don’t mind negative comments really. If we only receive kudos and no criticisms then we will never grow.

In America, I learned the arts of being “politically correct.” The problem with that stance is that I never really know what people are trying to tell me. I prefer direct and open communication. Sometimes it does hurt quite a bit, but it only hurts when we have ego. Once we remove the self-pride (which is one of the seven deadly sins), there is nothing to be hurt about.

I would much rather you tell me that you don’t like something than telling me that “it’s nice” but secretly hating it.

Please criticize me in my face and tell me you absolutely dread this crap that I am posting. If you tell me, I will correct my course and post relevant content that is of interest to you. Of course I could also agree to disagree with you.

Feedbacks—good or bad—are always good. There is no such thing as constructive vs destructive criticisms. For me, criticisms are always good. It is always feedback. But elaborate feedback are better, because we know the why.

I went out to have a boat ride. Marks are left on the ocean by boats long sailed by. Faintly at a distance you can see a boat along the horizon.

When I first posted a time-lapse video about a sunset cloudscape [1], a few people commented that they really liked the sequence about the sunset, but they wish that it was longer. Recently, I read about doing long exposure via stack sequences, so I tried to see if I can utilise this new knowledge to render a long-exposure shot this way since I have already a long series of captures done.

For this photo, I have used 36 captures spaced at 10-sec each to create the final image. The time spacing is probably a bit too wide to render the smoothest clouds, because it was originally intended as a time-lapse sequence and not an LE stack. I used Photoshop’s Stack Median functionality to blend the transition, then I lowered the clarity in Lightroom to smooth out some uneven edges on the clouds and water. And voila. It works pretty well, so I will definitely work on more in the future.

In Beijing, hutongs (胡同) are alleys formed by lines of siheyuan (四合院), traditional courtyard residences. Neighborhoods were formed by the interconnection of these alleys, and the word hutong can also sometimes be used to refer to such neighborhoods.

The alleys are long and narrow, so while you can walk around on foot, the best way to see the hutongs is to go with one of these rickshaw rides (pictured), which functions similar to a hop-on / hop-off transport around the neighbourhoods.

I did not begin to appreciate the magic of cloudscapes until I started working with time-lapse photography. The clouds during sunset in Hong Kong’s typhoon season is most incredible, and combined with sunset the color fidelity is second to none.

The time-lapse which I have shot in the past were output directly from camera without much processing, mainly as I did not see it possible to process each RAW capture by hand to create a video. However, a friend on Instagram recommended that I checked out LRTimelapse, which allows me to set a few shots in the RAW captures as keyframes and then batch it over the entire sequence.

With this new tool in hand, I am able to process each capture to my standards and then sequenced it together inside Premiere Pro.

The title of this sequence is by my auntie Rita Lee in Hong Kong. The soundtrack is found on SoundCloud on tracks licensed via Creative Commons. This video could not have been made without all the fantastic creative resources available. Once again, CC rocks!

This is a 360-degree panorama of the bus terminal located at the Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier in Hong Kong. Located at the south-most corner of Kowloon, it is the ideal location for bus companies to plan their last stop shuttling to other parts of Hong Kong.

The KMB (Kowloon Motor Bus) company started many of its first bus routes from this terminus, as noted by the bus numbers on the station, which ranges only in single digits — as opposed to the double- or triple-digit route numbers seen in most parts of Hong Kong.

Directly adjacent to the station (center in this photo) is the Star Ferry pier, which provides passenger ferry service to Hong Kong Island.

In this panorama, I have heightened the shadow area to expose the rust and dust of the awning covering the station. I am attracted to its geometric architectural forms and years of decay. You probably would not notice them when you walk by as they are well within the shadow areas, but as a lover for deadly objectives, it was a wonderful find for me.

Stitched together with 12 captures with the 6D + 17-40 mounted on the Manfrotto 303SPH pano head.

We stayed at the Rocks—an urban locality, tourist precinct and historic area of Sydney’s city center. Shortly after we have arrived, we found a pop-up farmers market near the hotel. So we took the time to do some shopping and sample a bit of local fruits. It reminded me a little bit of the farmers market which I used to visit a lot in Union Square in New York while I was living there.

In more academic settings, I have a particular fondness for geometric constructive forms, so many of these works speak to me — even though they are abstract in nature.

Heinz Mack (born March 8, 1931) is a German artist. Together with Otto Piene he founded the ZERO movement in 1957. He exhibited works at documenta in 1964 and 1977 and he represented Germany at the 1970 Venice Biennale. He is best known for his contributions to op art, light art and kinetic art.

# Heinz Mack

Heinz Mack was born in 1931 in a small German village. Between 1950 and 1956 he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 1967 together with Otto Piene he started a series of what were called Abendausstellungen (evening exhibitions) at their studio in Düsseldorf. This series was the initial event for the formation of the group ZERO (with Mack, Piene and Günther Uecker as its nucleus) and the international ZERO movement. Among the participants of the ZERO movement were Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni and Jean Tinguely.

In 1964 Mack, Piene and Uecker arranged the “ZERO Lichtraum (Hommage á Lucio Fontana)” at the 1964 documenta in Kassel. From 1964 to 1966 Mack lived and worked in New York where the Howard Wise Gallery presented a solo exhibition in 1966.

1970 Mack was invited as visiting professor to Osaka, Japan. In the same year he represented Germany at the 1970 Venice Biennale (together with Günther Uecker, Georg Karl Pfahler and Thomas Lenk).

For the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich he created an illuminated “Wasserwolke” (Water cloud).

In 1972 he was asked to create a 230 ft tall sculpture for the United Nations headquarters in New York (not realized).

Mack is represented by ARNDT Berlin.

This is a typical front porch of the houses in Tai O. There’s nothing special about this except how representative it is of the type of front porches from a long gone era. In some ways, Tai O is a wonderful place to visit, for it has kept all the charm that you would see as common place in Hong Kong — before that culture was swept away by the waves of modernity.

The front porches in these houses are never gated. It has two arm chairs, and a stack of plastic chairs. Usually, these chairs that are decorated are reserved for the elders of the family — the grand parents, or the great grand parents. The older generation would sit outside of the house to enjoy the fresh air. The kids will “know their place,” so to speak, and sit in the plastic chairs.

These unspoken rules are not really taught in the traditional sense — you just learned to look at the room and know where you’re supposed to sit (LOL) — both in a random front porch like this or at a dining table.

And should someone is so “uncultured” and sit at the “wrong” seat, no one would tell you either, but you’ll know — you’ll get these really funny looks for the entire time you were there so that hopefully you’ll figure it out yourself (LOL). It‘s not uncommon for parents to give their kids a “talk” privately just coz they picked the wrong seat. I know this is very funny but I never even think about these things until you realized that in some cultures, people could just sit anywhere they want to.

Chinese is a fairly hierarchical society — you are supposed to respect the elderly — so this preferential treatment does not only apply to people within your family (e.g. grand parents or great grand parents). As a culture that places emphasis in the collective, you learned from a very young age that you would respect the elderly even if they’re simply someone older than you are within the same community that you live in.

The Hung Hom Station (紅磡站), formerly known as Kowloon Station (九龍車站), is an MTR station on the East Rail Line and West Rail Line in Hong Kong. It is located next to the Cross Harbour Tunnel in Yau Tsim Mong District, Kowloon. It is one of the three Hong Kong ports-of-entry on the MTR network which connect directly to mainland China.

This 360-degree panorama was shot handheld with the 6D + 17-40 f/4L. It is handheld, so parallax error is unavoidable. I do not generally do location scouting for my photography, but with a proof-of-concept capture in hand I will definitely go back with my tripod — when I get my pano head. Any day now—seems it is a must buy item in my arsenal now that I started doing so many panoramic shots.

I went to PolyU to see a drama performance last week, and just like my sources at the university has mentioned, the bamboo scaffolding on the Innovation Tower is completely gone, and now you can see the organic forms of this magnificent architecture soaring to the sky.

As I last wrote [1], Zaha Hadid is one of my all-time favorite architects, and this will be her first permanent fixture in Hong Kong. Truly it is incredible.

I was just passing by, and it was super late at night, but here you see why usable high ISO matters. This was shot with the 6D + 17-40. It was shot handheld with 3 exposures. Without a tripod it is not really technically ideal to try at HDR but thanks to the modern marvels of technology, the features are aligned nicely.

Trust that I will go back during the daytime when I have a chance.

Whenever people are in the market for an SLR, they come by and ask me what I thought of Nikon. I really don’t have an answer for you. I have been shooting with Canon since I was a teenager, so I know my Canon lineup very well. I do not have a lot of disposable income so although I have played with Nikon cameras, I will not be considering adding a Nikon to my camp any time soon.

So “what about Nikon?” I don’t know. Go ask a Nikon guy. They will probably love it but they are likely not in the position to compare that with Canon either.

Bottom line: the two compete in the same market, their technologies are similar to one and another. Their handling is different. You get used to one and then you stick with it.

Sticking with it is key — don’t jump around the two camps. Photography is a lifetime investment. If you ask me I would recommend that you get a Canon—for starters you are free to play with my lenses if you want to. Go with Nikon? Good luck, I won’t be able to help with any of your camera purchases in the future, but I am sure that if you can find a friend who shoots with Nikon, they would know.

I am obsessed with this plant, but I have no idea what it is called. I think that it might be the same plant that people used to use in ancient times for human-powered fanning. Trust that I will go and investigate.

It is a bit hard to figure out what things are called with just a visual image. Yes I did try Google Goggles but Goggles is not really good at finding images unless there is a visual exact match.

This is essentially what Flickr is training its engines to do: associating words with images so people can search better. Yes, really. And if they are not really doing that then trust that this is what I will do if I own an image search engine.

Yes, it is planned but probably not going to be for public consumption til 10 years from now so it is useless for you to know about what is going on at the moment.

“This collection is inspired by global riot initiated by teenagers, local political and social issues. Traces of it can be seen from the pattern on fabrics, details on accessories to the vibe of the final outfits as a whole. This collection is also one of the so many ways to celebrate the waking up of youngsters from ignorance, self-egos and work their ways out against the corrupted social value, ideology and bureaucracy, of which their actions are always regarded as a form of social disturbance. on top of that, it allows me to express my own personal perspective.”—Rhyox Wan, designer

Rhyox Wan (WAN Wai-Kit): …and we live off of the unsettling soul: Look 5 / PolyU Fashion Show 2013 / SML.20130626.6D.16847

30-second long exposure with an ND filter.

Personally I would have preferred the 4-inch filters so I can drop in after I have set the focus, but I can’t seem to find them in Hong Kong. But I found this variable filter recently: the H&Y ND2-ND400 specifically. It is a screw in, and when set to minimum ND2 I can still see the scene fairly clearly as well as able to focus using the AF on the camera. After I have the parameters set, I dialled it to ND400 and expose everything manually.

I think that I should be able to push a little longer next time. What I observed is that because of the wind, the plants appear to move quite a bit and thus rendering a blur. So next time I would try to do a 2-minute if I am able to.

There is this odd-shaped building with very wonderful forms at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade (西九龍海濱長廊), a park near the West Kowloon Cultural District (西九文化區 WKCD) which was built completely on reclaimed lands [1, 2].

With its very sculpted forms and striking yellow paint, it looks almost like Bumblebee from the Transformer series [3]. I have always wonder what it was when I photograph West Kowloon from Tsim Sha Tsui.

It looks like a sculpture, but I was told that it was likely a ventilation structure for the Western Harbour Crossing (WHC 西隧), the third tunnel to cross Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong [4, 5]. Based on its architectural style, it might very well be the property of MTR, Hong Kong’s metro system, whose Airport Express passes this junction from the Kowloon station to Hong Kong station.

MTR buildings tend to have very recognisable forms like this, and is the reason why I picked that. But if I find someone in the know I will definitely ask. Unfortunately, even on Google Maps this building is unmarked.
