I found out that my new Canon EOS R8 comes with an iOS program that can connect to the camera, together with live preview with Wi-Fi — greatly simplifying the process of taking self-portraits. Today, I placed the camera on a tripod, and took a series of selfies. It’s all natural light, so the ISO is quite high (ISO 10000), but I post-processed the images with Topaz Photo AI to reduce the noise. I’m quite happy with the results.

Quite happy with the results. Will be doing more in the future!

I saw this danish when I was shopping for cakes for Mother’s Day. It was very last minute because I totally forgotten about it (LOL). I ended up just getting of tarts and danish because they looked so good!

I’m very happy with the decision. I bought these online, and the product looked nothing like the sample photo — because it looked 10x better than the product shot.

It also tastes very yummy.

When Paper Stone Bakery first came popping up in Hong Kong, I thought that it was an import. I eventually found out that it’s owned by Maxim’s, a food and beverage conglomerate in Hong Kong.

There isn’t a whole lot written about this place, but I see it as a bakery concept that focuses on making artisan bread, but with a more mass market appeal. It is slightly more expensive than the truly local mom and pop shops, but the quality is decent and relatively convenient.

I shot this at home against all the mess, so I masked out all the chaos in Photoshop. Thus the white background. Otherwise, it’s just a regular shot on the dinner table.

The cutest projector ever. I bought this to do a series of video projection with a pianist.

2024 is the Year of the Dragon. I was born in the Year of Dragon (1976), so this year is my year. 2024 is the Wood Dragon. 1976 was the Fire Dragon. So I created these images as Fire Dragons. These illustrations function both as a Chinese New Year card as well as a self portrait — with the fire dragon metaphor.

龍 The Chinese Dragon (loong, long or lung) is a legendary creature in Chinese mythology. As the only mythological creature in the Chinese Zodiac, they traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water — i.e. prosperity and flow.

May the dragon enrich your year with lots of joy and prosperity!

--- Poem

龍舞霜林燃火紅

年歲豐盈喜自隆

The dragon dances in frosty woods, igniting a blaze of red,

As the years bring abundance, joy naturally ascends.

This poem is a play on the Chinese New Year greeting. It’s structurally formed by 7 characters in two lines.

This poetic form is called 七言絕句, which translates to “seven-character quatrain.” This form is a classical Chinese poetic form consisting of a quatrain with seven characters (or syllables) per line. It was particularly popular during the Tang Dynasty.

The Tang Dynasty 唐朝 is often considered the golden age of Chinese culture — it’s ruled by the Lee Family 李, which is my family name — whether I’m related to the ruling family is a different story. (LOL)

There are aspects about this poem that I intended:

龍 Dragon. First character of the first line.

年 Year. First character of the second line.

龍年 Year of the dragon. The first characters of the two lines combined form the purpose of the greeting.

林 Forest. Made up by two characters 木 (wood). 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon.

火 Fire. Represents the Fire in the Fire Dragon, the year I was born.

I made these compositions using Stable Diffusion. I exported a custom designed typography as a PNG to drive a Canny control net. I additionally used an abstract image I made with Midjourney to drive the style using the Clip Vision IP Adapter control net. Then I overlaid my original design on top of the generated images.

This is what I eat every morning as well as late at night when I need a snack — Greek yogurt, with granola for texture, and dried fruits for natural sugar.

Chobani is my favorite Greek Yogurt brand. I learned about it many years ago ~2006 when I lived in New York. At the time, I was experimenting with frozen yogurt as a healthier alternative to ice cream.

Making homemade ice cream is something that I have been doing since 1995. It is something that I made a lot of. I love making ice cream because most of it is about making the perfect vanilla base and then throwing whatever you want into it to make it special.

The perfect vanilla ice cream I make requires 12 egg yolks per quart. It’s not for the faint of heart. You’d be full with just two spoonful.

To make frozen yogurt, you need yogurt. If you use regular yogurt, you need to first strain them with cheese cloth, which takes a long time. That’s why I usually just buy greek yogurt to speed up the process.

But then I realized that it’s a fantastic product on its own, especially when mixed with granola and fruits. I used to buy all of these things separately, but when I discovered Kellogg’s having this dried fruits and granola mix, I started buy that instead.

Quick and simple. That’s how all food should be.
