Visitors can reach the peak of Mount Tai via a bus which terminates at the Midway Gate to Heaven, from there a cable car (纜車 缆车 pictured) connects to the summit. Covering the same distance on foot takes about two and a half to six hours. (1)
Each cable car takes 8 passengers. On the way up they forced pack us as sardines to the maximum capacity, but on the way down they let us go loosely and allows me room to do some photography.
The cable cars are completely enclosed, but there is a utility cable car which is open air (pictured first on the right). I would have loved to be able to get on that one as the plexiglass windows on the cable car are scratched due to weather battering and I could have taken some better picture if there is no window between my lens and the scene.

More WTF artworks which short-circuited my logical unit—Mickey and gas masks. Kata Legrady’s art work is a chance encounter between objects from two distinct universes: weapons of mass destruction vs that of childhood memories.
This work speaks to me mostly because I am very against warfare in the international arena—politicians candy-coating messages to instil suffer and pains to others and treating everything as child’s play. Another messaging I see is that messaging with political agenda is being inserted into mainstream media with questionable ethics. Whether these are the artist’s original intentions is unclear, but what is clear is that it summarises the current state of affairs very well.
Kata Legrady was born in 1974 at Bacs in Hungary. She studied music and singing at the Pecs Conservatoire before finally opting for the plastic arts. She lives and works in Hanover, Germany.

The 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple is situated at the top of 泰山 Mount Tai. It is a grand building complex which was built using a special combination of metal components, wood, and bricks and stone structures.
In the historic age (though I am unclear when it was actually built), workers must travel on foot to the mountain top. The temple is situated at the tallest peak—the 玉皇頂 Jade Emperor Peak—which is commonly reported as 1,545 metres (5,069 ft) tall, but is described by the PRC government as 1,532.7 metres (5,029 ft).
It is a living monument that anything—no matter how crazy—can be accomplished as long as you have the determination and the will. (1, 2)

The main reason we picked 山東省 Shandong Province as our first destination to travel to for the “中國旅遊 中国旅游 China Tourism” project was to visit the 孔府 Confucius Mansion.

The view from inside the 纜車 缆车 cable car going up the summit. Space is very tight on our way up so I took this using the G12. I typically travel with four cameras: Canon EOS 7D, Canon G12, iPad, iPhone — and now also the Canon EOS M.
The Canon G12 supports RAW so it allows greater flexibility even though it is housed inside a point-and-shoot casing. The EOS M I have found to be good at taking video shots but so far its focusing has been very slow so I would likely continue to bring my G12 with me on future travels.
I get annoyed sometimes with the reflection from the window, but sometimes those reflection makes more interesting natural contrast of forms with the scene which I do like.

“鼎香鎖愛情” (鼎香锁爱情 Ding, Incense, Locks and Love)
As previously posted, red ribbons with locks were seen all over the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple (1). Here at another temple also at 泰山 Mount Tai, the locks were affixed to a 鼎 Ding (2). According to locals, Chinese couples visit temples before they get married. Their names are crapted onto each individual lock and a ritual is performed by the monks to bind their love to eternity.

Wufenpu (五分埔) is the largest clothing market in Taipei, best known for its wholesale pricing. It is most suitable for ladies who enjoy bargain shopping. I had no interest in that, but instead gravitated to the little food vendors seen here selling knock-off versions of Taiwanese specialties, such as the fried chicken steak in the front. In the background, another Buddhist temple appears rather unexpectedly in the midst of all the chaos.

”Green cloud cave” at Taishan Mountain in Tai'an City, Shandong Province, China
位於泰山象鼻峰的東邊，洞頂巨石上寫有“青雲洞”三個大字。相傳青雲洞陰雨天時，洞內若冒青煙與白雲洞之煙雲相遇就會遍雨天下。
Located in Taishan 象鼻峰 (literally means “top of the elephant nose mountain”) to the east, the three characters “青雲洞” (literally means “Green Cloud Cave”) were written on the top of the cave boulder. According to legend, when the the green fogs inside the cave meets with the cloud, then it will be a rainy day.

The Former Residence of Kang Youwei is located at 5号 Fu Shan Zhi Lu, Shi Nan Qu, Qingdao, Shandong, China, 266003. Built as a German-style architecture in 1899, it is situated near Huiquan River. Originally it was the residence for the Governor of Germany-Austria when Qingdao was occupied by foreign forces. In 1924, Mr KANG Youwei purchased it to use as his own residence and he lived there until his death in March 1927. The site was comprehensively renovated in 2000 by the Qingdao Municipal Government and formally open to the public as a memorial museum. (SML Translate)

This is a handheld 6-image pano stitch. The path to the top is really steep and carrying my tripod with me was prohibitively dangerous. Hopefully I will have time in the future to bring an entourage of photo assistants with me. For now this is possible mostly because Photoshop cS6’s pano engine is pretty good these days.

Closed to the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple on the other side of the 玉皇頂 Jade Emperor Peak is a “Guest House” (aka hotel) which is enclosed in radio satellites. The very traditional architecture of the tower suggests that it was probably originally built as a watch tower in ancient times. But in modern days it is now filled with satellite dishes, likely for intelligence use as well as radio broadcast use.
I did not have the time to check out the facilities, but I think that if and when I decide to revisit Mount Tai for some more photography, this would be my only lodging option.

The Former Residence of Kang Youwei is located at 5号 Fu Shan Zhi Lu, Shi Nan Qu, Qingdao, Shandong, China, 266003. Built as a German-style architecture in 1899, it is situated near Huiquan River. Originally it was the residence for the Governor of Germany-Austria when Qingdao was occupied by foreign forces. In 1924, Mr KANG Youwei purchased it to use as his own residence and he lived there until his death in March 1927. The site was comprehensively renovated in 2000 by the Qingdao Municipal Government and formally open to the public as a memorial museum. (SML Translate)

Kang Youwei (simplified Chinese: 康有为; traditional Chinese: 康有為; pinyin: Kāng Yǒuwéi; Wade-Giles: K'ang Yu-wei; March 19, 1858–March 31, 1927), was a Chinese scholar, noted calligrapher and prominent political thinker and reformer of the late Qing Dynasty. He led movements to establish a constitutional monarchy and was an ardent Chinese nationalist and internationalist. His ideas inspired a reformation movement that was supported by the Guangxu Emperor but loathed by Empress Dowager Cixi. At the top of the mountain is three large red domes (pictured) and a 6-storey high rotating observation deck which provides an ideal spot for observing the architecture and harbor view of Qingdao.

We stopped by the Siberian Tiger Park (東北虎林園) at Harbin (哈爾濱) during our trip to Dongbei (東北). The park was built in 1996 and contains an open area with hundreds of tigers. At present, it is the largest natural park for wild Siberian tigers in the world.
You can definitely see the tigers up close and personal here. And there are so many of them. The ride through the open area takes approximately 30-45 minutes and is well worth it. I took my 100-400 with the 7D with me but even this photo was shot at 200mm because it was that close.

This photo was taken into Photoshop for some H+S specifically for the shadow area. The color cast is somewhat troubling so it was taken into the L*a*b mode for curve adjustments — which is by far the best method to tweak Lightness curves without affecting color information. The Lab mode additionally allows for color contrast tweaks which are more natural because it does not affect the lightness information (unlike RGB mode where color + lightness is intertwined.)

It was the first time I have been to Qingdao, and I did not realize how busy the streets at night were. The China I had rememebered visiting 20 years ago has evolved a whole lot. Which is more the reason why I feel that it is important for me to record its change through photography for my 10-year long project.
I cannot always explain why I photograph the things which I do. Photography is my canvas. I paint on it through photographing existing forms, but the forms itself may not be a representation of anything. I just like the way the lines intersect in space.
The photograph is of something, so it is not intrinsically abstract, but what I wish to say is. As such it is abstract. Often people comment on the fact that abstract photography does not exist, in reality it does — it is the intention of the photographer which matters.
This was taken on a trip to Jinan, Shandong Province, China with the Canon G12 while I was smoking outside after lunch. It is the wall of a back alley where the kitchen is.

This store is absolutely amazing! The 豪大大雞排 Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken sells fried chicken. No, it’s not the American Southern style fried chicken — rather, the chicken is slapped into a thin piece of steak-like shape (think minute steak), coated with spices and then deep fried into perfection.
Although you see only a few people lining up here, by the time I finished eating, the line was half a block long. It was super yummy. Highly recommended!
I can’t find their website but apparently they are so popular that they have opened up stores in Australia — and they do have a website: hotstarchicken.com.au/ so you can see what those chicken looks like, perhaps?

One challenge in posting pano photography on social media is that you simply don't see the details in the “normal” aspect ratio. But that's ok. I can reformat and let you see the goods. :)
Taiwan reminds me a little bit of Macau, with lots and lots of scooters. In Cantonese, we call scooters 綿羊仔, which literally means “small sheep,” as in they are not as powerful as the standard motorcycles, but rather small in stature.
These scooters run rampant on the narrow alleys of the Shilin Night Market (士林夜市), where merchants were seen using them to shuttle merchandises back and forth the busy street. While a van might seem to be more useful, the streets get so packed that it made sense to use these bikes as motor transports to navigate haphazardly among the crowds.

Symphony of Yellow, Green, and a Hint of Purple.
Great mullein, scientifically known as Verbascum thapsus, is a biennial plant native to Europe, northern Africa, and Asia, and has been introduced to the Americas and Australia. It is known for its tall, woolly appearance and its medicinal properties.
I saw these at the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney in 2014. I came here for a wedding, but ended up finding unexpected treasures through the lens.
I also met up with some friends I haven’t seen forever — a couple who both worked in interactive and arguably one of the most brilliant people I know in the world.
The husband is someone who is a synergist — he who wields design and technology professionally — They’re very rare. I know maybe less than five people like that. His only regret is that I write Python. My only regret is that he writes Ruby (LOL).
Brilliant parents have brilliant kids. Such exceptional kids. Some people energize me without having to say a word. I could feel it from the kids.
As with most of my best trips, I had no expectations, but I ended up having some of the best times in my life. It reminds me that I need to allow myself to explore more often — sometimes life is most beautiful when you don’t plan anything and just allow things to happen randomly.

I was hungry after landing in Helsinki, so I walked around to look for food. When it comes to food, I’m highly opinionated, but also very easy going.
If you ask for my opinion, I will tell you what I want, down to the preparation method and maybe even the amount of time and doneness to everything. But if you picked or cooked anything, I will eat pretty much anything.
This sushi restaurant was a block away from the Radisson Blue Seaside, where Supercell puts me at, so that’s where I went.
This has gotta be one of the best sushi’s I’ve had in recent years. I didn’t expect this at all. The place is understated, attended by staff that leaves you alone. When I dine alone, I like to eat in peace, and they let me do just that.
This quick lunch was the first meal I’ve had in Helsinki, and it left a strong impression. Highly recommended!

KHL had always used P+S in recent years. Last year he asked for my recommendation for a new P+S and I recommended the Canon G12. But it turns out that he finds G12 to be impossibly difficult to use and he went out and bought a Nikon P+S. Since I am now back in HongKong, I told him to just use my old Canon 10D. He reluctantly accepted because he said that he didn't think that he could use it. I told him that SLRs are easier to use. People always think that P+S are easier — the reverse is true. At the end of the trip I just mount the 17-40f4L on “his” 10D permanently and he was loving every bit of it. Even my old Domke camera bag has new use. This is crazy yes? I bought this 10D second-hand from a friend way back in 2005 when he “upgraded” to his 20D. This baby is still running and is at its 55,000+ cycles—crazy. SML loves awesome Canon cameras. :)
On my way up to the peak, I walked by a bridge and I thought that I would check out what is underneath. I like exploring places where I am not supposed to go, and I enjoy finding abstract forms in the trash.
Photographing trash—aka my “deadyard” series—is important to me. I do that as a reaction upon seeing photographs of beautiful people and beautiful objects which are themselves not beautiful. By choosing a subject that is intrinsically ugly, I attempt to force the viewer to react to the composition alone. If you remove the subject matter you simply see images as lines and space things will be more readily appreciated.
This capture contains a diversity of forms which contrast each other as if they are having a dialog with each other. That is interesting to me, but I am not “normal” and as such I can never predict how “normal people” will react to the things which I like.

At the garden surrounding the shrine, the pink blossoms contrast well with the green rooftops accented with red stripes and yellow dots. I am unsure which floral variety this is, but since the National Flower of Taiwan is the plum blossom (梅花), it would be my best guess.

Fruits are nothing special, right? Except the fruits found at the market in Taipei just look so juicy, and they are so vibrant under the bright light. I have never walked by the market where I felt the need to buy some fruits. But here I did. I bought some “Taiwanese pineapple” which looks like a white version of dragon fruit and tasted like mango. I had no idea what it was really. All I knew was that it was oh so yummy.

Cuverville Island, located in the Errera Channel on the Antarctic Peninsula, is renowned for hosting the largest Gentoo Penguin colony in the region.
The island is home to approximately 6,500 breeding pairs of Gentoo Penguins, making it the largest rookery for this species on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Edinburgh Pano from Princes Street. In the center is the Princes Street Gardens, a public park spanning over 37 acres and located in the heart of Edinburgh.
On the left, the equestrian statue is the Royal Scots Greys Monument. It commemorates the bravery and sacrifices of the Royal Scots Greys, a distinguished cavalry regiment that served in various conflicts, notably the Second Boer War.
The buildings to the left across the gardens is the Edinburgh Old Town, a historic and culturally rich area that represents the heart of Scotland’s capital. It’s recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
To its right is the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade (with all the flags), an outdoor area located at the entrance of the Edinburgh Castle.
The Edinburgh Castle on the right is one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks, perched atop Castle Rock and overlooking the city of Edinburgh.

Locks at Mount Tai, also known as “love locks,” are a common sight, especially at the temples and along the pathways leading to the summit. This tradition involves couples attaching locks to fences, railings, or other structures as a symbol of their love and commitment. The locks are often inscribed with the names or initials of the couple and sometimes accompanied by red ribbons or cards with prayers or wishes.
Mount Tai, also known as Tai Shan (泰山), is a mountain of immense historical, cultural, and spiritual significance located in Shandong Province, China. It is the highest point in Shandong, with its tallest peak, Jade Emperor Peak, reaching an elevation of approximately 1,532.7 meters (5,029 feet)
Mount Tai has been a sacred site for over 3,000 years, serving as a major ceremonial center in Chinese history. It is one of the Five Sacred Mountains of Daoism and has been associated with sunrise, birth, and renewal. The mountain has been a place of worship and pilgrimage for emperors, who performed the Fengshan sacrifices to heaven and earth to legitimize their rule. The first recorded emperor to perform these rituals was Qin Shi Huang, who unified China in 221 BC.
These locks were seen at the temple at the Jade Emperor Peak (simplified Chinese: 玉皇顶; traditional Chinese: 玉皇頂; pinyin: Yùhuáng Dǐng), the highest point on Mount Tai.

Love Locks, Jade Emperor Peak 玉皇頂, Mount Tai 泰山 / SML.20121011.7D.09582.C23
When our plane was about to land in Sanya, I spotted a gigantic Guanyin near one of the coastline. It turns out that it was a statue of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (better known as Guanyin in East Asia). The statue is 108-meter (354 ft) tall, and as you can see from this aerial view, it is pretty big. The locals claim that ever since it was built in 2005, the frequent typhoons affecting Southeast Asia no longer cause any troubles for Sanya—which I can neither prove nor disprove with any meaningful data.
I usually try not to pull out my DSLR when all electronic equipments must be turned off, so sneaking the EOSM out is the best I could do. Useful little mirror less camera, I have to say.
