Wufenpu (五分埔) is the largest clothing market in Taipei, best known for its wholesale pricing. It is most suitable for ladies who enjoy bargain shopping. I had no interest in that, but instead gravitated to the little food vendors seen here selling knock-off versions of Taiwanese specialties, such as the fried chicken steak in the front. In the background, another Buddhist temple appears rather unexpectedly in the midst of all the chaos.

”Green cloud cave” at Taishan Mountain in Tai'an City, Shandong Province, China
位於泰山象鼻峰的東邊,洞頂巨石上寫有“青雲洞”三個大字。相傳青雲洞陰雨天時,洞內若冒青煙與白雲洞之煙雲相遇就會遍雨天下。
Located in Taishan 象鼻峰 (literally means “top of the elephant nose mountain”) to the east, the three characters “青雲洞” (literally means “Green Cloud Cave”) were written on the top of the cave boulder. According to legend, when the the green fogs inside the cave meets with the cloud, then it will be a rainy day.

Three uniformed policemen riding on a speedboat speeds across Tolo Harbour. These speed boats are named Divisional Fast Patrol Craft (DFPC), and about 23 of them are currently in use [1].
This was taken with the 7D + 100-400, but wow it is still not close enough. But I don’t think that any of the 400+ telephoto lenses are within my affordable range right now.

Here are those fishermen seen earlier in the stream [1]. And it appears that they are in fact not one man but two women. They sailed all the way towards me so I took a series of videos of them—to be posted. Soundtrack is a big issue for videography. I am so sick of writing music just to go with these tracks. But if I don’t write them they become very boring to watch…
This is a bit of an extreme crop—lens not long enough. If I photograph enough of these I will go get a 100-400 sooner or later.

When the Snowden supporters past by the entrance o the US Consultate in Hong Kong, they ran along the entire Garden Road wrapping around the entire consulate. Frantic journalists all trying to get a good shot were fighting for good vantage points to photograph while the police tried very hard to get the photographers off the street—unsuccessfully.
To be frank, I think that there may be just as many journalists at the rally as there are people protesting…

Built in the 15th year of emperor Wanli (1587), the Soul Tower (明樓) is the symbol of the tomb. The structure and materials are similar to those of Yongling (永陵). It is an architecture with a hipped gable roof with brick arches inside. All the components, such as corbel brackets, tie-beams and eave-rafters are made of stone, with color paintings on the surface. Thus it looks exactly like a wooden structure. Inside the tower stands a stele which bears the inscription “the mausoleum of Emperor Shenzong of Great Ming” (神宗顯皇帝之陵).
Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM. Situations like this makes me regret not putting the 17-40 on the camera. But it was so dusty and I did not want to change the lens out in the open…

Taxis in Hong Kong come in three types which serves different areas. All three types serve the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA/HKG) but they have different boundaries where they can travel.
+ Red: Urban taxi. The red taxis have the highest fares among all but they serve all areas in Hong Kong.
+ Green: New Territories taxi. The green taxis are cheaper than the red cabs, but they serve only parts of the New Territories, and they cannot go to Kowloon. Since New Territories cover a large area of land, their fares are cheaper.
+ Blue: Lantau taxi. These blue taxis run exclusively on southern Lantau Island, where the HKIA is. They are also not as ubiquitous as the other ones—there are only around 50 of them.

Kang Youwei (simplified Chinese: 康有为; traditional Chinese: 康有為; pinyin: Kāng Yǒuwéi; Wade-Giles: K'ang Yu-wei; March 19, 1858–March 31, 1927), was a Chinese scholar, noted calligrapher and prominent political thinker and reformer of the late Qing Dynasty. He led movements to establish a constitutional monarchy and was an ardent Chinese nationalist and internationalist. His ideas inspired a reformation movement that was supported by the Guangxu Emperor but loathed by Empress Dowager Cixi. Although he continued to advocate for constitutional monarchy after the foundation of the Republic of China (1912–1949), Kang's political ideology was never put into practical application.

Adding things is a human fallacy. People have a tendency to create value through adding. Add more features, add more colors, add more fonts, add more things, add more people, add more likes. Everything is lost in chaos. Nothing is seen.
I photograph this, because it depicts a balance of forms, color and composition. It is a good example of how to use colors, in particular. Colors are utilized as accents. If you want to accent anything, use it sparingly. The pipes of the ceiling forms are in a relatively neutral off-gray, with strokes of red and blue just here and there, the overall composition is formed. It has contrast. It is balanced.
The same principle can be used in design. Use one font, make one huge, make others small. Use red sparingly, contrast with sea of black. Of course, the reverse is also true. If you fill the page with red, you can accent by having a small point of white also. Everything just need to have contrast. Without contrast everything is just a blur.

Design Interact: Web Site of the Week (www.designinteract.com/sow/122004/)
Week of December 20: Project Rebirth Web Site
Project Rebirth is an online chronicle of the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. As immediate and compelling as a physical visit, this project gives people the opportunity to observe and share in the progress of the reconstruction.
Newly released at the time the team was considering technical specifications, thisProject Rebirth Web site site uses the FlashMX development environment to full effect. Functioning as a portal to extensive content, the beauty of this Web site lies in its ability to be current and historical. With a visual design that appropriately takes a back seat to the content, it records ideas, images and interviews in their original context while also allowing for their evolution.
Primary content consists of a series of video images (presented in a timeline format) captured by six, 35mm time-lapse cameras positioned by Project Rebirth around the World Trade Center site. They shoot one frame every five minutes—and will continue to do so for ten years. The images enable the viewing of the rebuild as it occurs on any date; in seconds, visitors can see the footage of a single day. There are also interviews with reconstruction overseers, journals by filmmakers and video of major milestones in the redevelopment efforts.
Project Rebirth Web siteThe key challenge for the developers was to create an interface that would incorporate what would ultimately be ten years of film footage, that didn’t inundate visitors and yet communicated the passage of substantial amounts of time. Their solution is an interactive, XML-driven timeline that delivers fluid viewing of time-lapse footage. It provides an appropriate time-based metaphor that also does a nice job of integrating video, audio, imagery and text-based content into a single interface. The time-based experience allows access to any moment in time and provides the ability to navigate the Web site by date and/or event. Our one complaint: The link from the home page, to this main feature, looks far too much like header art. We would have liked to see billing more in line with its importance.
This collaborative effort between Project Rebirth and IconNicholson began in the summer of 2003 and the site launched in September 2004. On average, visitors are staying on the site 19 minutes, which is significant in comparison to Internet-wide stays at sites with similar content. Interestingly, international users comprise 30% of all visitors.

Identifiable humans in photos have traditionally caused me problems in the past because of various laws covering model releases for licensing. But I have now identified the solution to this—photographing their legs only, with caps, thus completely anonymous but yet add every bit of life to otherwise cold forms.
人氣 (literally human air) is the technique used in Chinese traditional paintings. The idea is that having a human figure, no matter how faint, adds a bit of life to the composition. And it seems to be working better now.
I really enjoy this collage of forms seen at a public housing development near me. There are very interesting lines moving the eye across different parts of the image, while the person gives it a bit of suggestive motion leading off the page.

I used to do my own photography for my designs. But sometimes it was challenging to get something together quickly last minute and so I ended up using stock, which is never really in a way that I want them.
So I thought that I would just go and photograph some stock for myself to use, which is why there are a bunch of very minimalist abstract forms on my stream now.
I have had a fairly difficult time finding a good angle for this because the basketball courts are surrounded by these very tight green frames, but also because of that, they added a bit of front bokeh to these captures, which is interesting to me.
I might just have to reserve a court next time so I can photograph these properly, but at least it helps to figure out where this is available nearby.

This is a handheld 6-image pano stitch. The path to the top is really steep and carrying my tripod with me was prohibitively dangerous. Hopefully I will have time in the future to bring an entourage of photo assistants with me. For now this is possible mostly because Photoshop cS6’s pano engine is pretty good these days.

Closed to the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple on the other side of the 玉皇頂 Jade Emperor Peak is a “Guest House” (aka hotel) which is enclosed in radio satellites. The very traditional architecture of the tower suggests that it was probably originally built as a watch tower in ancient times. But in modern days it is now filled with satellite dishes, likely for intelligence use as well as radio broadcast use.
I did not have the time to check out the facilities, but I think that if and when I decide to revisit Mount Tai for some more photography, this would be my only lodging option.

This video is done for my 人流 Human Logistics series. What I tried to do is to show that even without specific signage or directions, we as humans also travel in the flow similar to the flock of birds and school of fish.
This particular video is assembled using footage shot from the ground level. Some parts are more successful than the others. But in some earlier videography shot from the aerial view, the pattern and formation are very obvious.
This is a 10 year project of mine. And I hope that at the end of the decade I will be able to assemble enough clips to make a feature film. The soundtrack is written quickly inside Ableton Live.
Everything is licensed via Creative Commons. The video should be downloadable from Vimeo and the soundtrack from SoundCloud.

My mom suggested that instead of photographing seagulls from the 27th floor, I should just go downstairs and get a better view. Seems she is right—kind of. The aerial view is still good to get a macro view, but it is easier to photograph them in this side view.
I have always wanted to photograph birds, and in New York it used to mean that I have to venture far out in a special trip. But now that I am in Hong Kong, I just go downstairs. Super sweet!
@Mom SML Thank You for the suggestion!

Buses in Hong Kong run on time, have routes which make sense, are air-conditioned, some with wifi on board, and are tidy in clean. Compare this to the MTA bus system in New York, which is never on time, with routes which make no sense, and filled with filth, and you know why I don’t miss New York.
Pictured is the bus terminal in Ma On Shan for 286M, a bus which goes to the Diamond Hill MTR station. The suffix M means that the bus stops at MTR (Hong Kong metro) stations. Similarly, if you see a suffix K to the bus route, you know that it stops at a KCR (Hong Kong train) station. KCR and MTR used to be two companies but after the merger they are the same—but you will see that the stations are slightly different as well as the trains which they use. For visitors to Hong Kong all you need to know is that buses which have a K or M will connect to the metro network at one of its stops, usually at the terminal, thus making travel planning easy.

These are lamp posts situated around the Olympic Park. See how similar they look to the observation tower they are building? I have a feeling that the observation tower is somewhat inspired by the designs of these lighting fixtures. They could also have been built by the same people—which I am unsure.
The little dotted lines in the background are Chinese kites being flown near the park.

I like it when I can find human participants in the collage of street forms.
A young high school student is leaving the tunnel lit with yellow lights, as an old man is entering it from afar. Their direction adds a bit of life to an otherwise cold composition while the architecture hides their identity (as usual, I am conscious of limited use without a model release).

The Exchange Square 交易廣場 is a building complex located in Central, Hong Kong.
The property is the home of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong since the 1980s. It also houses many international banking and law firms ncluding Credit Suisse, Bank of Montreal, Lloyd George Management, Latham & Watkins, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Allen & Overy and Allens Arthur Robinson. It is also home to the consulates in Hong Kong of Argentina, Canada, Japan, and the American Club of Hong Kong.
Pictured is One Exchange Square and Two Exchange Square from the point of view from the entrance level—which, like many hotels in Hong kong, is not on the ground floor but at the elevated footbridge level.
This photo was taken at night so it is a bit grainy. And as usual, I find this extreme wide angle view up to be more interesting than other perspectives.

There is something gritty about this scene. I was reminded of some of iD Software’s many first person shooter games when I saw this. There are the pipes, the dirt, the multiplied boxes of no-one-knows-what. And then of course there are the lights.
To me this lives in the game world. It is interesting to me.

There is something beautiful about where building touch—especially when they are almost touching but not quite. That oh-so-sweet soft shadow is left behind.
The facade on the architecture are distinctive from one another: one old, one new. One weathered, battered and used. The other shiny and new. But the older one always has so much more character—texture, color, inconsistency—in other words, imperfection.
Imperfection is always so much more interesting. Perfection is boring, cold and uninteresting. Embrace imperfection. It would make a happier life—true to nature.

The straight and curve lines of a wooden bench under a late afternoon sun at a park in Hong Kong.
The numbers 3, 6 and 9 have special numerological properties in Chinese culture.
+ 三: 3 sounds like the character 生 which means life.
+ 九: 9 has the same pronunciation as 久, which means longevity.
+ 六: 6 is the reverse of 9 pictographically. The two numbers 69 together forms the yin and the yang.
Thus 3, 6 and 9 together is a metaphor for a continually evolving long life of longevity. This is why I picked these numbers for my landline phone numbers. Although most Chinese people prefer the number 8 which sounds like 發 (fortune). Personally I prefer 6 and 9 as money for me is unimportant, but I would love to make a mark some time in history. Hopefully, maybe.

Schools in Hong Kong has a very recognisable form. You don’t even need to look for the sign and you can immediately recognise that this is a school. It is a bit like SimCity that way. Education institutes with more funds can obviously afford to hire an architect to design something different, but most public schools follow the same design pattern. Often the only thing which differentiate one from another is the color of their facade, and that’s about it.

The Rotunda annex of the National Library of Finland, completed in 1906, is a six-story structure with bookshelves placed around an open central space. Gazing up or down in the Rotunda offers stunning views of the library’s interior architecture
The National Library of Finland (Kansalliskirjasto) serves as the foremost research library in the country and is a vital institution for preserving Finnish cultural heritage. Located in Helsinki, near the iconic Senaatintori square, it is both a repository of knowledge and a cultural hub.
I visited this place in August during my week in Helsinki, per recommendation by Alexander. I only had a 24-105 with me during the visit and was unable to capture its beauty in a single shot, so I have stitched together 14 captures to make a vertical pano.

Signal-Berg (literally Signal Mountain) is a park opened in 1984 and situated 98 meters above sea level at the top of a mountain in the center of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China. Its main entrance located at 17 Longshan Road.
At the top of the mountain is three large red domes (pictured) and a 6-storey high rotating observation deck which provides an ideal spot for observing the architecture and harbor view of Qingdao.
The hill was originally called Longshan (literally dragon hill) which is also commonly known as “Large Stone Mountain”). During the German occupation period, it was named Mount Diederichs (Diederichs-Berg) (also known as Signal Hill (Signal-Berg). During the Japanese occupation period, it was renamed as 神尾山 (Kamio Hill). In 1922 when Qingdao was finally returned to China, the Chinese government official named it as 信號山 信号山 Signal Hill.

Most Chinese literature has an implied subtext. To understand precisely what they mean often it is useful to know about the person who wrote it. I don’t know who wrote this text so I can only interpret it in the most “objective” way.

This photo was taken into Photoshop for some H+S specifically for the shadow area. The color cast is somewhat troubling so it was taken into the L*a*b mode for curve adjustments — which is by far the best method to tweak Lightness curves without affecting color information. The Lab mode additionally allows for color contrast tweaks which are more natural because it does not affect the lightness information (unlike RGB mode where color + lightness is intertwined.)

I have been cheating and doing time-lapse videography with video sped up at 1000% but it does not have the quality which I seek. So now I am doing things the proper way.
Pictured is the Canon EOS 7D + the Canon EF 17-40 f/L USM mounted on tripod and set to shoot at 10-second intervals using the Canon TC-80N3 remote.
This way I get full resolution RAW for every frame, thus good enough even to play as a 4K cinema movie while having the sharpness I needed for the video and require no unnecessary time spent rendering the 10x speed increase inside Premiere. Not to mention that it saves space also.

30-second long exposure on tripod with ND400. This was mainly used to illustrate more clearly how blurry the leaves can get with just a little bit of breeze.
With this capture, I figured out why it is that people who does ND LE always have a bit of architecture or rocks in the scene that sit still, as they provide interesting contrast to an exposure which looks almost fake otherwise.
It is an interesting way to show motion also, as I have learned.
I will take my tripod to the shore as requested. Stay tuned.

We stopped by the Siberian Tiger Park (東北虎林園) at Harbin (哈爾濱) during our trip to Dongbei (東北). The park was built in 1996 and contains an open area with hundreds of tigers. At present, it is the largest natural park for wild Siberian tigers in the world.
You can definitely see the tigers up close and personal here. And there are so many of them. The ride through the open area takes approximately 30-45 minutes and is well worth it. I took my 100-400 with the 7D with me but even this photo was shot at 200mm because it was that close.

The sand is a super sturdy tripod for the Canon EOS M, apparently.
I discovered today that there is a beach near me in walking distance. So I took my EOS M to see if it is too far to lug my SLR with me. 15 minutes. Not too bad at all. Expect to see some long exposure photography with water soon.

An island was discovered near the water surface yesterday when I was testing with my new toy—the Canon EF 1.4x Extender III which turns my 70-200 f/4 L lens into an effective 98-280 f/5.6L lens.
I don’t really know what it is. From the angle I was shooting from on the 27th floor, it is hard to tell exactly how closed by it is. Is the Hong Kong Government doing some deep sea research? WTF is that? This “island” spans at least 100m in length and is seen very close to shore (10m). It first appeared yesterday but it is no longer present today.

Public calligraphy is generally reserved for the VIPs in China. The text usually references the beauty of the landscape, but since they are recorded somewhere, they often also works as landmarks in the wild before the age of GPS.
# SML Translate:
+ 日: sun
+ 高: high up
+ 月: moon
+ 同: together
# SML Opinions:
Broadly speaking this suggests the sun is far up in the sky, but the moon is also very nearby. So the writing was probably written some time during the evening, where you can see the sun and the moon together. I don’t know what the calligrapher’s original intention is, but to me it implies a bit of romance.
# SML Notes:
I shot this photograph before I bought the GPS unit for my 7D, so the GPS coordinates here is approximate.
