Some weird color cast here that I can't seem to get rid of. Will be reprocessing this. Somehow it does not show up in Lightroom / Photoshop. Only when posted to Flickr. Double-checked my monitor color profiles and Adobe Color Settings and they are up to date. Ugh. Very annoying!

香港馬鞍山 Ma On Shan, Hong Kong

J, a friend from New York who taught me about “active piles” for people with ADHD. He also showed me how thrilling it is to ride in a motor cycle. I rode motorcycles at the back of his. Those were the only times I’ve been on a motorcycle. It was a lot of fun.

He showed me how thrilling it is to feel alive. It might be why I eventually went skydiving. I want to feel. And I felt for the first time when I rode on a motorbike.

I didn’t keep a lot of friends in New York, but I consider him to be one. He’s one of the very few people in my life who never mind my chaos. I let very few people see my chaos — I know that you’re a good friend when I let you see mine.

I saw some colorful Xiao Long Bao 小籠包 while looking for a place to eat in Grand Plaza, and decided to check it out.

2/ Specialty Dynasty Xiao Long Bao (8 flavors) 特色皇朝小籠包 (八色)

Xiaolongbao refers to a type of small Chinese steamed bun traditionally prepared in a xiaolong, a small bamboo steaming basket. Xiaolongbao are often referred to as a kind of "dumpling", but are distinct from Chinese jiaozi or wonton. [1]

1. 招牌原味 Signature Original

2. 芝士 Cheese

3. 蟹粉 Crab Roe

4. 蒜香 Garlic

5. 川味 Szechaun

6. 韓式泡菜 Korean Kimchi

7. 鵝肝 Foie Gras

8. 黑松露 Black Truffle

The signature original is definitely the best.

3/ Vinegar 醋 is the only condiment I need for Xiao Long Bao.

4/ But some people also prefer hot sauce and pepper.

5/ 聞香蔥油餅 Scallion Pastry

6/ 聞香蔥油餅 Scallion Pastry - Inside view

Unusual item. Tasty. This pastry seems to be a modern interpretation of the traditional dish — Scallion pancakes 蔥油餅.

7/ 蘿蔔絲酥餅 Radish Pastry

Shredded daikon radish is thinly sliced and wrapped in pastry. Aka Turnip Puff Pastry, Radish Puff.

8/ 香煎豆沙鍋餅 Pan-fried Pancake with Red Bean Paste

Shanghainese dessert. One of my favorite desserts in Chinese cuisine. Often, I would intentionally dine in Shanghainese restaurants just so I know that I could order this dish.

Tanks for whale oil. Abandoned Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia.

The whale oil tanks at Grytviken Whaling Station are massive industrial structures, measuring approximately 30 feet (9 meters) in both height and diameter5. These imposing steel cylinders were used to store whale oil during the station's operational period from 1904 to 1964.

This composition does not feel quite right to in this orientation, it feels better upside down. I don't really understand my aesthetics.. perhaps you can analyze me.

I picked up this Honey Orange Wheat Baguette 蜂蜜橘子麥法包 Paper Stone Bakery, a local bakery in Hong Kong.

It is crunchy on the outside, but chewy on the inside. It’s like carved out baguette filled with oranges. The orange flavor is concentrated into a paste like consistency, but remain in fruit physical form, as seen in the closed-up macro shot.

It has an interesting balance of sweetness and acid. If you’re familiar with the yuzu ice drinks typically served in Hong Kong, then this orange paste tastes a bit like that.

For $31 HKD (~$4 USD), it’s a decent bite for the morning.

Branding — I love the “Bread is Life” tagline on the wrapper. Subliminal messaging is an important branding device. The branding for this local brand did a lot of right without being in your face.

The f/8 macro is better in terms of showing the detail of the food, but the f/1.8 macro with the far shallower depth of field gives a more romantic feeling.

British artist Michael Price spent seven years researching the techniques of pigment preparation from the Renaissance masters and prepares natural pigments from minerals. Azurite gets separated into different particle sizes to reveal different hues of blue which possesses quality far superior to modern-day synthetic pigments.
