What does Chinese culture look like to the Western eyes? Here is one abstract sculptural interpretation by English sculptor and draughtsman Nigel Hall.

Nigel Hall’s grandfather was a stonemason working on churches and cathedrals. Nigel’s observation of the precision carving of stones growing up would influence his sculptures and drawings intimately.

There is a delicate balance of forms through an organic visual language cast in a material as concrete as phosphor bronze. The two droplet-like forms are intended as “Chinese whispers”. Two separate forms connected like the yin and the yang. The interplay of shadows and balance is important to the artist, and that intention is quite evident in this minimal yet powerful piece.

Form follows function is the reason why I enjoy photographing bridges. They are always built for utility, but are always so interesting.

This is the understructure of a bridge for the MTR (Hong Kong’s metro) near the Ma On Shan station in Hong Kong. It is filled with pipes—large and small.

Lines in space. Not a single bit of ornament, but every bit beautiful.

The Hong Kong Museum of Art (香港藝術館) is the main art museum of Hong Kong [1]. It was originally established as the City Hall Museum and Art Gallery at the City Hall in Central in 1962 before moving to its present location at 10 Salisbury Road in 1991.

Unlike almost all art museums int the world, the Hong Kong Museum of Art does not take donation—a fact which I thought was somewhat bizarre. When I lived in New York, the annual tax-deductible membership to MoMA and the Whitney is part of my yearly expenses. When I went to the Hong Kong Museum of Art and paid for my annual membership, it was 100 HKD (~13 USD) which is a far cry from the 250 USD which I am used to. I asked the woman if they have other perhaps “patron level membership levels” and she looked at me oddly with a blank stare.

The permanent collections include many Chinese traditional landscape paintings (山水畫) as well as artworks by local artists. The landscape paintings in particular had much impact on my current photography work as it was from there that I learned the concept of 人氣, the presence of humans—no matter how small—to breathe life in otherwise cold compositions.

The urban landscape is filled with billboards and other distraction, so it is often hard to find a perspective which is void of all the visual distraction when using a wide angle lens. However, I think that I have identified the way out—look up and remove everything except the sky.

This is another shot of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Unlike the previous shot which is about the architecture’s overall recognisable form [1], this one is a minimalist take on one of the facade which lights up with tiny spots at night.

The irregular and almost organic light fixtures echoes the slightly cloudy sky, whereas the linear angular architecture creates contrast to the otherwise dark sky.

A black kite (Milvus migrans) holds onto his fresh-caught fish tightly with its big claws near the water surface at Tolo Harbour. I have often seen fishermen nearby so I guess I should be able to find more of these sightings in the future.

Unlike the previous shot which was photographed from the 27th floor down [1], this one was shot on ground level. To be frank was his quick dive into the sea. This shot was mostly made possible by 7D’s fast 8fps burst rate and AI Servo tracking. Everything happens so quickly that there is not really any time to think about how to compose the image, so it was cropped after the fact.

A collage of architectural forms in Central / Admiralty, the financial downtown district of Hong Kong.

In the center, the unmistakable triangular forms of the Bank of China Tower (中銀大廈 BOC Tower). Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M.Pei, it is one of my favorite architectures in Hong Kong. It is currently the fourth tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, after International Commerce Centre, Two International Finance Centre and Central Plaza. But while the those tallest three buildings have no character (IMAO) to speak of besides being tall, the BOC Tower is a modern structural engineering marvel, and the first composite space frame high-rise building [1].

On the right is also one of my favorite architectures in Hong Kong. Standing 25-storey in total, 8 levels of the The Hong Kong Club Building (香港會) is owned by the Hong Kong Club while the other floors are leased for office lease. What I love about it is its simple curved facade which is extremely identifiable despite its small size [2].

On the left is the AIA Central. It was originally named the AIG Central, but it switched hands in 2009 after the global financial crisis. I mostly included this building in the frame to show the contrast in scale by the workers tending the windows via the outdoor elevator [3].

The one thing constant about the ever-changing urban landscape is the cranes at the construction sites.

I was born in Hong Kong, but I went to the US for college (university) in 1995, and after graduation I moved to New York and have been living there ever since. But in 2012, I moved back to Hong Kong to start my own company. And I definitely notice the change.

Most of the newer architecture in Hong Kong is built upon landfill, so in many ways the Victoria Harbour just got smaller. It seems that even the Star Ferry ride as a result is shorter. Could that possibly be?

Pictured is a set of cranes seen outside the International Finance Centre (IFC). It seems that they are building even more structures over there but exactly what is unclear.

In art school, we were taught to “draw what [we] see.” The philosophy is simple: when the left brain get involved and proceed to interpret what “must” be reality, what is drawn is never a representation of reality. Of course, an artist is up to his/her own interpretation, but if the intention is to represent reality, then this is a very good way of achieving it.

These bizarre patterns are seen every night outside my window. Photography captures reality so it is interesting to note how it seems completely illogical that water should appear like this—but yet it does.

Ships disturbs the flow of water, so under long exposure, it renders a matte surface which reflects the lights + shadows from the tree-lined Tolo Highway. The undisturbed water is left behind with a clear dark divide, brightened only by the light anchor floating in the sea.

The capture is mounted on a tripod and captured using a remote, so trust that everything is lying still, but the water moves, so the light anchor is moving quite a bit, even though we might think that it should not.

Located on the 20th floor of iSquare in Tsim Sha Tsui, the Canon Customer Care Center provides support for both in-warranty and out-of-warranty care for its customers.

I went there yesterday mainly to get the battery grip for 6D as the retailer who sold me the body did not carry it, and also to send my 7D to be looked at.

None of the camera bodies except the 1D series are weather-sealed, and after leaving the 7D near my opened window during stormy weathers in Hong Kong, it kept on going to Err 70 which bothered me. My 7D is well out-of-warranty but paying 300 HKD (38.65 USD) is a fair price to pay to make sure that everything is operational inside.

Aside from providing excellent service, the interior architecture filled with organic forms is a feast to the eyes, making the experience quite pleasant.

A lot of the shopping malls I have visited in Hong Kong features open skylight ceilings, which makes it much less claustrophobic as well as being energy efficient.

I discovered that the autofocus on the 50/1.4 was dead, and I probably will never go fix it because it is probably not worth it, but luckily manual focus is rarely an issue.

Completely unexpected, someone wakeboarded outside the window yesterday, creating some truly wicked forms on water—sweet. For these kinds of photos you really need an SLR—but if you can do it with a point+shoot + able to focus then kudos to you—please remember to share your secret. :)

Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques.

It is extremely rare that I would have the time to walk around the airport to do photography. Usually when I am at the airport I am in a hurry. But I came here last week to hang out with a friend whom I haven’t seen for 20 years when she was passing through. And since I came all the way I thought that I would utilize the opportunity to take some photographs also.

Featuring very articulated structural forms and designed by Norman Foster, the Hong Kong International Airport is a perfect marriage of form and function—form follows function—which is precisely what I love about it.

I am eye’ing at the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L now. But at US$2,599 it is not exactly affordable. So for now I continue to photograph with the 17-40mm f/4L and do post-processing work inside Lightroom and Photoshop to get the perspective in order.

Pictured is an alley found while walking around 西灣河 Sai Wan Ho. The highway to the left is the 東區走廊 [1] Island East Corridor [2], an expressway which rungs along the Hong Kong Island from Causeway Bay to Chai Wan. The architecture to the right is the back facade of 西灣河文娛中心 [3] Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre [4], a cultural community arts center in Hong Kong.

Detail of a tree bark. Each year, the layers get shredded and allow new skin to be exposed.

Some people fear death—what is there to fear? The old passes away to allow opportunities for the youth. If life does not possess a limit, you would likely be wasting it all. It is through the limits of the time availability, that you realize how precious every second is.

In prioritising my own valuable time, my criteria is the same as Steve Jobs’: “Would I do this if I am going to die tomorrow? If I won’t, then it is not worthy of my time.”

If I am going to die tomorrow, will I process this image? Yes, because I love it. If I were a painter, this is what I would paint.

I downloaded a new app for panorama on the iPhone yesterday. This one is called Photosynth, which is created by Microsoft. I actually remembered Photosynth when it was first introduced for the desktop years ago. The interface is slightly better than 360pano, but for stitching the pano itself I think that 360pano is still better. Here you see the seams are very bizarre. You can blame it on the poor GPS reception but at least 360pano will not try to stitch things which physically do not belong together, whereas Photosynth would.

But in some ways all these errors makes this somewhat beautiful, in a very cubist kind of way. The colors are distracting so I removed it.

This is a 360-degree stereographic flat of a pedestrian tunnel near where I live. It is somewhat bizarre to see all the exits, yes? Thus the charm.

The interactive version is hosted on Photosynth:

The 界 Division series is mostly about forms divided by lines for balance. The black cat in this capture adds a bit of life to the space, which I like.

The EOS M will go all the way to ISO 6400 apparently—had to move the luminance noise reduction to 100 to make the capture tolerable—I guess there is a first time for everything.

A collage of forms seen at a 巴士站 bus stop at 西沙路 Sai Sha Road.

The dominating zigzagged V form is a pedestrian footbridge allowing people to cross the highway. The taller bridge going horizontally is the 地鐵馬山鞍山線 MTR Ma On Shan Line (Hong Kong’s metro network) which runs parallel to the highway.

At the bottom tip of the V form is a 雙層巴士 double decker bus. Almost all buses in Hong Kong are double deckers. The vehicle closed by is a 21 seater minibus.

小巴 Minibuses serve routes which do not have many passengers. They have a defined route with a few defined mini bus stops at the terminals, but you can get off anywhere you like. You just alert the driver when you want to get off and they stop for you. It is a bit like a cab with a route.

Pedestrian footbridge is one of the unique character about urban planning in Hong Kong. Pictured is an elevated walkway at night near Exchange Square in Central.

By using bridges and tunnels, pedestrians are able to get from point A to point B quickly and efficiently without stopping for traffic lights. The always jammed-pack traffic below also need not be halted by series of traffic light—which I reason is the primary reason why New York’s traffic is so impossible.

Almost every building in Central and Admiralty is connected via bridges. Some are even air-conditioned, allowing traders to visit different investment banks and conduct businesses in a nice calm air even in the very humid summer.

Hong Kong Coliseum (Chinese: 香港體育館), better known amongst the public as the Hung Hom Coliseum (紅磡體育館, 紅館) is a multi-purpose indoor arena, in Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It was built by the Urban Council and inaugurated on 27 April 1983. The coliseum has 12,500 seats, which is the second largest among the same kind of indoor facilities in Hong Kong, only behind the 2005-opened AsiaWorld-Arena.

Landform is a land art locate at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, Scotland.

#landart #landscapearchitecture #charlesjencks

Created in 2001, this installation combines elements of sculpture, garden design, and conceptual art to create a visually captivating and intellectually stimulating experience.

Charles Jencks is an American-born architect, landscape designer, and architectural theorist, was known for his pioneering work in postmodern architecture and landscape design.

His approach to landscape architecture, which he called “landforming,” sought to synthesize sculpture, garden design, and conceptual thought.

Jencks believed that landscape design had a unique quality of being the most “cosmic” of all arts, allowing for a deeper connection between humans and nature.

Key features of the work:

1. Design

The work consists of a series of grassy, terraced mounds arranged in spiral patterns, surrounding crescent-shaped pools of water. This design creates a visual link between the gallery’s Modern One and Modern Two buildings, which are situated across the road from each other.

2. Inspiration

The shapes and forms in Landform are inspired by natural phenomena such as waves, clouds, and geological formations. Jencks was also influenced by fractal patterns and chaos theory, incorporating these complex scientific concepts into his landscape designs.

3. Functionality

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Landform serves multiple purposes:

- It provides a striking backdrop for events at the gallery.

- It offers a platform for viewing the gallery’s outdoor sculpture collection.

- Visitors can walk and sit on the terraced paths, encouraging interaction with the artwork.

4. Recognition

Landform won the prestigious Gulbenkian Prize for Museum of the Year in 2004.

Charles Jencks. American cultural theorist, landscape designer, and architectural historian.

On my way up to the peak, I walked by a bridge and I thought that I would check out what is underneath. I like exploring places where I am not supposed to go, and I enjoy finding abstract forms in the trash.

Photographing trash—aka my “deadyard” series—is important to me. I do that as a reaction upon seeing photographs of beautiful people and beautiful objects which are themselves not beautiful. By choosing a subject that is intrinsically ugly, I attempt to force the viewer to react to the composition alone. If you remove the subject matter you simply see images as lines and space things will be more readily appreciated.

This capture contains a diversity of forms which contrast each other as if they are having a dialog with each other. That is interesting to me, but I am not “normal” and as such I can never predict how “normal people” will react to the things which I like.

So after more research it appears that these are not a seagulls but in fact Asian Waterbirds. Apparently, they are under WWF protection and is a rare species—but I see them all the time outside the window.

Also noted: I definitely need a longer lens. But it is good because I never really got to use my 70-200 til I moved back to Hong Kong.

Some captures are impossible to process inside Lightroom, so this was done in Photoshop.

At the garden surrounding the shrine, the pink blossoms contrast well with the green rooftops accented with red stripes and yellow dots. I am unsure which floral variety this is, but since the National Flower of Taiwan is the plum blossom (梅花), it would be my best guess.

Color tends to distract. This composition also makes it more evident that I am interested in forms mainly. But flight attendants don't seem to care. They just think that I'm moving my iphone way up close to the teapots trying to find “faults” — which is rather annoying at times. SML is currently researching “new” hacks to photograph without anyone noticing — not really to photograph things illegally but just in order to “not scare the crowd” when doing street photography.

Citibank Plaza (花旗銀行大廈) is a modern glass and steel office complex in Hong Kong that comprises Citibank Tower, ICBC Tower, a 3 level basement garage capable of accommodating 558 vehicles, as well as a retail podium. With a gross floor area of almost 1,600,000 sq ft (150,000 m2)., Citibank Plaza is one of the biggest office complexes in Hong Kong, capable of serving a working population of over 10,000. At 205 metres tall, Citibank Tower reaches up to the 50th floor. The highest floor on ICBC Tower is the 40th. Completed in 1992, it was one of the first office buildings in Hong Kong to incorporate intelligent building and environmentally friendly features.
