Reflection from skyscrapers are always fun to photograph. Now that I have the 1.4x extender it makes things far more easier and lens distortion does not appear to be much of an issue anymore. Some day I would consider getting the TS-90 as that seems like a nice to have.

I came from a very academic family. Growing up, books are the only constant which surround me, and sport is the last thing on any activity list. I do play tennis and squash, but not very serious about it.

So I never really notice until recently that the infrastructure in sports contain so many wonderful forms. But of course they do—there are lines which lead, lines which separate and divide, and they are fitting for my forms series.

Pictured is the oh-so-lovely tree-lined blue jogging trail at the Ma On Shan Promenade. While I dislike many of the color choices built by the Hong Kong Government, this jogging trail is the best subject that has landed near my home in Hong Kong. Some day, I will jog on it. I really don’t jog, but I probably should…

A blue yacht from the CUHK Water Sports Centre (香港中文大學水上運動中心) sails in peaceful waters at Tolo Harbour. Its simple triangular forms accents well with the organic reflected forms of the water surface.

More gorgeous forms of utility. This one was taken inside the multi-function space which was being used as badminton courts at Kowloon Park.

Badminton is one of my favourite sports. You might think that since it weighs nothing you don’t really exercise much. You would be wrong. It can get quite extreme. One of my cousins used to play badminton a lot in high school and his right arm is one handful longer than his left.

Seriously crazyisgood. :)

The Clock Tower (尖沙咀鐘樓) in Tsim Sha Tsui, also known as Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower (前九廣鐵路鐘樓) is the only remaining artifact from the original site of the former Kowloon Station on the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR, now bought by MTR). Built out of red bricks and granite, the Clock Tower stands 44m tall and is situated right next to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre [1].

I photographed this mainly to see if it was actually possible to use the 100-400 at night, and amazingly it was with the 6D—seriously crazyisgood. The IS on this lens is quite powerful as the exposure was 400mm, 1/80 sec, f/5.6 at ISO 12800. For lenses without IS shooting at 1/80 sec at 400mm would be impossible.

Very soon in the future not a single human would understand the concept of a “fast lens” vs a “slow glass” as technology advances.

If you have a plane which averaged US$24–30 million per unit [1] lying on a completely open space while the ship set sail, you would bind it security on the deck also, with multiple chains, as seen here on the deck of the USS Peleliu (LHA-5).

Tai Wai Station is an interchange station on the East Rail Line and the Ma On Shan Line of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong. The station was originally opened in 1983 as an intermediate station of East Rail Line. In 2001, the station underwent expansion and construction ended in September 2004. The new concourse part was opened at first in the same month. Since 21 December 2004, the station has served as the terminus of the Ma On Shan Line, as well as the interchange station between these two lines. [1].

Pictured is the super long escalator which leads passengers from the ground station level to the platform. To cope with large amount of passenger traffic, most escalators go up only, and the exit going down are usually in the forms of staircases.

I usually try to leave photographs in colors when they work. Black and white photography does have its charms, but sometimes the colors add quite a bit.

Central Plaza (中環廣場) is a 78-storey, 374 m (1,227 ft) skyscraper completed in August 1995. Unlike what the name may have suggested, it is not located in Central by Wan Chai (灣仔), and is currently the third tallest architecture in Hong Kong after ICC and IFC [1, 2].

Designed by Dennis Lau & Ng Chun Man Architects & Engineers (HK) Ltd, the building was design to be in triangular shape in order to allow 20% more office area to enjoy the harbour view as compared with a square or rectangular shaped buildings.

As with the HKCEC next door (pictured at the lower left corner), the Central Plaza was built on reclaimed land. And as you can see, even more construction is taking place in the land in front of it—though exactly what is unclear at this point.

Stitched using 15 full resolution RAW captures with the 6D and 100-400 in order to achieve a high enough resolution for the building as well as minimise geometric distortions.

Almost all buildings at the PolyU campus features red brick facades with very geometric compositions. I have passed by it many times but this is the first time I have been inside, and it was actually a lot nicer than I had expected.

Although the buildings officially have a name (usually in reference to their donors), they are usually referenced by students and their staff via their “core” name—a letter from the English alphabet for speedy way finding.

Pictured is the intersection between two buildings: Anita Chan Lai Ling Building (陳麗玲樓 Core P) and the Pao Yue-Kong Library (包玉剛圖書館 Core L).

The pot cover edition was not very effective, so I bought a stainless steel strainer today as replacement.

# How it works

1. Stainless steel mixing bowl provides large container surface for cigarettes. Easy to clean and dispose of ash.

2. Instead of using oxygen-elimination as extinguishing method, I fill the bowl with water, easily found inside “smoking lounge.”

3. Strainer prevents cigarette from dropping into water accidentally.

4. Since it sits comfortably onto the bowl, the strainer also provides adequate balance to hold cigarettes in place.

5. When done, simply flip the strainer and cigarette extinguishes in water immediately.

Intended for personal use, but similar designs can be made to fit a party crowd no doubt.

Cost: mixing bowl HK$25 (US$3) 日本城. Strainer HK$18 (US$2) 日本城. Compare to my old Arne Jacobsen Ashtray (US$90) at MOSS NYC this is a bargain.

Leaving the clothes outside the window to air-dry is a Chinese specialty. I didn’t use to think much of it until I have traveled the world and noticed that no one else does this except people in Hong Kong.

So many people does this that metal racks are often built in on the building itself. If the building does not come with a rack to hang anything, people in Hong Kong will hack their way out to crate racks themselves.

Pictured here is the facade of a public housing development in Hong Kong. You can see that several households have decided to create their own outdoor structures. Drying clothes outside the window requires some skills though—it is easy to lose clothes this way, and clearly one of the towels (or tshirt?) has fallen to the floor below.

These outside hanging racks are not unique to public housing either, they are seen everywhere. In more affluent neighbourhoods the racks are usually installed outside of the maids’ quarters.

Crazyisgood. Hong Kong Specialty.

If you are willing to look, interesting forms are everywhere. This look like an art installation to me, but is just marks left on the road. The text is cropped from an upside down “SLOW”, situated next to some road signs. But it is beautiful to my eye. I love seeing typography in the wild—whether they were intended as typography or not. It says something to me.

Give me a camera, and I am never bored.

The urban life is filled with deadweight time. For this photo, I was waiting for the bus to go home. But once I have a camera in hand then I can be stuck in traffic all day long without a moment of boredom.

This is why there is a photography series for shopping malls, a photography series for human logistics, a photography for almost everything—even for when I go to bathrooms.

Photography is my creative outlet. It brings me happiness. It prevents me from killing myself. It is in many ways my biohack. I have ADHD+Bipolar, so I get bored very easily. But photography keeps life interesting to me. And having an interesting life is what makes life worthy to live for.

This is a handheld panoramic photograph of West Kowloon from the vantage point of 中港城 China Hong Kong City in 尖沙咀 Tsim Sha Tsui stitched together in Hugin using 8 RAW capture with the Canon EOS M + Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM lens.

As usual with these panorama done handheld, the seams are not perfect, so I left the imperfect seams here as otherwise there is no way to cover the tall 環球貿易廣場 International Commerce Centre (ICC) in the middle.

ICC is the tallest building in Hong Kong as well as the fifth tallest building in the world. Notable tenants include Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, and ABN-AMRO.

Also in view are the shopping mall 圓方 Elements as well as many luxury condos featuring gigantic Feng Shui holes—a bizarre feature in Hong Kong architecture.

This is a vertical panorama stitched using seven 7D RAW captures (at 98mm) of the entrance to 中環廣場 Central Plaza in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Escalators at the entrance of the building are typical in Chinese architecture, as the ever flowing energy is similar to that of water, an important element in 風水 Feng Shui.

I never liked the design of the building. Most of the people in Hong Kong also question the naming of the building when it was built—although its name suggest that it is in 中環 Central, it is in fact located at Wan Chai—which is two MTR stops away.

# About 中環廣場 Central Plaza

This 78-storey, 374 m (1,227 ft) skyscraper was completed in August 1995 and is located at 18 Harbour Road, in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong.

It is the third tallest tower in the city after 2 IFC in Central and the ICC in West Kowloon. It was the tallest building in Asia from 1992 to 1996, until the Shun Hing Square in neighbouring Shenzhen was built. Central Plaza surpassed the Bank of China Tower as the tallest building in Hong Kong until the completion of 2IFC.

The West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) is a strategic investment by the Hong Kong Government to meet the long-term infrastructure needs of the arts and cultural sector and to position Hong Kong as a world-class city for contemporary arts and cultural entertainments.

The proposed and currently developing site is approximately 40 hectares and when completed will include 17 arts and cultural venues as well as space for arts education. One of these development will be the M+ Museum, which recently made news in the art world by snatching Lars Nittve to be its executive director.

Nittve was the founding Director of Tate Modern in London, former Director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the founding Director of Rooseum – Center for Contemporary Art - in Malmö, Sweden, and Director of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark. Many have high hopes that by involving Nittve it would allow Hong Kong to make a mark in the art world—an area where Hong Kong at the moment quite frankly lacks.

At the moment WKCD is still under heavy construction but WKCD has taken the opportunity to organise some temporary art installations such as the “Mobile M+: Inflation!”, which features inflatable sculptures at the future site of M+.

The site was closed because of weather when I visited it but trust that I will go back again when the weather is good. A roster of international artists are involved, including: Cao Fei (China); Choi Jeong Hwa (South Korea); Jeremy Deller (UK); Jiakun Architects (China); Paul McCarthy (USA); Tomás Saraceno (Argentina); Tam Wai Ping (Hong Kong).

The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens has a fairly severe vignette. When I switched on the profile lens corrections settings in Lightroom 4, I can see it fairly well. But for some captures the vignette is not really a bad thing—especially when what you wish to focus on is in the center of the frame.

I got yelled at by the security guard at the car park so I guess I won’t be able to study forms here anymore. I don’t know why but photography seems to always get me into trouble. I just like the way the lines move. They do not identify anything. But then the police or security guards will woo me away—which is very annoying.

I guess I will just need to find a car show in LA near where my sister live instead. Hong Kong does not seem to have any car shows, though the street itself is basically a living car show, with people driving the latest anything all day long.

When I say the latest. I meant the latest—last month I went to do some shoe shopping and picked out a pair which I liked, and the salesman looked at me and said: “You _do_ realise that that model is 2 months old, right?” Like I was crazy or something.

Oh, humans.

The 馬鞍山運動場 Ma On Shan Sports Ground is a multi-use sports ground built at 1 Hang Hong Road, Ma On Shan, Sha Tin, Hong Kong at a cost of HK$153 million (~US$19.73 million). It opened in 1999. The sports ground is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of Hong Kong.

This pano was shot handheld with the Canon EOS 7D + Canon EF 70-200 f/4L USM + EF 1.4x Extender III. The 24 RAW files are first imported to Lightroom 4, then exported as 16-bit AdobeRGB files, and then stitched together using the open source Hugin software using a Rectilinear projection.

Conventional wisdom might suggest that it would be easier to photograph pano using a wide angle lens. The truth is, it is easier to use a long lens if it is possible because telephoto lens have much less geometric distortion and as such makes it easier to stitch even when you don’t have tripod with you.

The resulting TIF flat is 745 MB big with a 40611 x 2292 resolution. If you are still wondering why I am shopping for a RAID config + buying at 24" large format printer. This is why.

The poetic forms of people swimming at the Kowloon park in Hong Kong.

# Soundtrack by Tomo Nakaguchi (CCBY)

I’ve shot a lot of videography but they are often stuck in queue because writing music is not my forte. But I have found a solution. SoundCloud now supports Creative Commons search, and I found this beautiful composition composed by Japanese musician Tomo Nakaguchi. The piece is titled “Swim” and it has the dreamy quality which I seek for this video.

I publish everything via Creative Commons when I can, so it is nice to also be able to use other people’s assets. Creative Commons make the world go round. SML Thank You!

This is the facade of Jardine House (Chinese: 怡和大廈), one of my favourite architecture in Hong Kong. It was formerly known as Connaught Centre (康樂大廈), but it was renamed some time later. Since I was not aware of its renaming until moving back to Hong Kong in 2012, I deduced that it was likely renamed between 1995-2012. Wikipedia did not say when, but this was the period when I was not living in Hong Kong.

Jardine House is an office tower in Hong Kong. It features these gorgeous circular windows on its facade. With a time-lapse series, it could very possibly be seen playing digital notes, but I don’t yet have access to a secure location in Hong Kong with a view of this architecture, and I am not about to hang out on the street the whole night to photograph that. So until then, here is a still, photographed from the vantage point of City Hall late at night.

Yes this would look very good in black and white also, and it shall be processed as such later on. For now though I think that the disparate yellow lights add a bit of charm to the overall composition so I kept it.

Faces are everywhere. I did not take this photo because it looks like a face. I liked the proportion of the forms. But when I started working on it I can’t help but notice the logos from the Transformer movie / toys series. Once registered it is difficult to not see them anymore. Perhaps subconsciously I am drawn to the proportions because it is similar to a face? Feel free to analyse me.

This is a photo of the Ma On Shan MTR station. The ladder like forms are the train tracks. The entire Ma On Shan Line runs parallel and above the highway as an elevated track. The station is located below the tracks in the yellow area, and is connected to two shopping malls.

The Light-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis 白頭鵯), also known as the Chinese Bulbul or 白頭翁 in Chinese, is a bird and a member of the bulbul family [1, 2, 3].

These birds are common in East Asia, and they feed on fruits and insects (pictured). They are mostly characterised by their black heads with a large white patch covering the napes and bellies. Their wings are in yellow and green stripes.

Bulbuls breed in the fall seasons, and tend to cluster together in the woods to call in a “cha-ko-lee...cha-ko-lee…” sound.

Two giant clocks with white marks and handles are fixated on a bright blue background next to the giant digital display at the Ma On Shan Sports Ground. Aside from having tracks for running, there is a standard soccer field inside, so it looks like that these clocks were designed for football.

The one on top shows the standard Hong Kong Time, where as the one below I think is for soccer.

Standard adult football match consists of two periods of 45 minutes each, known as halves. Each half runs continuously, meaning that the clock is not stopped when the ball is out of play. There is usually a 15-minute half-time break between halves. [1]

A man training for soccer inside the hard-surfaced soccer pitch at the Ma On Shan Recreation Grounds on a foggy afternoon.

This photo was stitched using 5 RAW captures. The bars blocked the view somewhat on the right but depending on use I guess it is possible to either crop the center to see the context for the buildings around the soccer pitch, or crop low to show the full soccer pitch. So I kept it. As usual, this was photographed for personal stock use.

I am learning more about the Hugin stitcher. Apparently by default it will mask out everything which is not in every frame, but it is possible to include areas of interest—so it is in fact possible to do multiple exposure if I wish to. For this photo I included the guy because it adds life to the photograph. But it is just as easy to leave him out. Lots of fun — all in an open source program. Highly recommended!

Usually car parks are built underground. But here in Hong Kong, some car parks are built above ground high up in buildings.

I don’t really know why this is, but I would reason that it might have to do with structural engineering. Most of the lands in Wan Chai were landfilled. There are also a huge networks of tunnels connecting all kinds of MTR lines underneath the downtown area. So it may be more economical and structurally sound to just build the car parks upstairs instead of downstairs. Thus creating these rather uncommon sights.

It looks as if it was going to rain but it did not. The circular dome houses Hong Kong Space Museum’s planetarium [1]. The square-ish structure is the Hong Kong Museum of Art [2]. The rectangular architecture is in fact the IFC Building [2] in Central across the Victoria Harbor—crazyisgood!

The aerial view makes for some truly spectacular photography. Now with the new 1.4x extended, I can really get close to the action. People photographed this way will always be anonymous, so it should relieve some of the pain I had when photographing humans, meanwhile the perspective is quite wonderful from this perspective.

Skyscrapers and reflections are fun—especially through a layer of glass with dotted patterns. I don’t really know the reason for it—maybe it shields heat better this way? I will ask an architect and get back to you on that. For now I am just glad that the camera has enough resolution to not turn all that into a moire mess.

The beauty of utilitarian forms continues. This is the view down under the MTR (Hong Kong’s metro) bridge at Heng On station in Ma On Shan. The only way to photograph this in its entirety is via panoramic photography because there is simply no lens this wide.

Often photographs don’t work because everything feels very “framed”. Here the pedestrians are on the either side of this extreme FOV which leads the eye out of the frame, and I think that photographs which do these are generally more successful.

This panorama is stitched using 16 5184 x 3456 RAW images and resulting in a 10916 x 4411 image which spans 179-degree field of view (FOV) horizontally and 79-degree FOV vertically.

You can use a fisheye, I guess, but you will still be limited by resolution. Not to mention that fish eye lenses will distort the image and I prefer vertical lines because straight lines.

Stitched using Hugin 2012’s Panini projection.

With the recent success doing handheld pano with Hugin 2012, I tried my hands at some handheld vertical panorama today.

This was taken on the path which I take to walk to the Ma On Shan Promenade. The buildings on the top right is 聽濤雅苑 Vista Paradiso, where SML Universe HKG is. The architectural complex to the left is 錦豐苑 Kam Fung Court—a series of public housing estates in Hong Kong. The forms you see in the middle is a primary school, as you should no doubt recognise by now from my photography of schools. The mountain in the background is 馬鞍山 Ma On Shan. And that’s not an airplane in the sky, it was a bird in the midst of flight.

This is a stitch of 12 RAW captures stitched together using the Trans Mercator projection so the buildings are not straight as it should, but it is the best projection I have tried out which would tile this well without losing too much materials in the process.

Finding perfection in life is going to be very difficult, but the imperfection adds to its interest, I think. If I wanted a perfect leaf, I could have just drawn it. But try drawing imperfection. It is very hard. I am imperfect. The leaf is imperfect. It feels closer to heart. Like the leaf which is imperfect, I find my own imperfection adds to my overall interest. If people are perfect life would be very boring, I think.

It seems that sports photography is definitely the 7D’s forte. So I think that I just might go and photograph some action at real matches soon.

Pictured is a guy shooting a hoop at a basketball court nearby. His identity is concealed because of the bokeh. The hoop in focus is located at the basketball court right next to his.

Identity concealed = no model release necessary. Excellent.

Sometimes when I photograph physically large things they appear to be microscopic images. This is one of those times. It is the ceiling covering an outdoor escalator in Central, Hong Kong. But it appears almost like some kind of tank tracks in a sci-fi movie. Abstract forms are interesting that way—a single image tinkles the mind for millions of possibilities. I think that this might be why I also have a preference for abstract paintings which evoke emotions and energy.

Over-complication is a human fallacy. So when I photograph anything, I try to maintain focus and make sure that every form in the frame matters and contributes something to the capture. If it does not belong then I make sure that they are not included.

For photographs which there is no time to think (live action), I just shoot and then crop after the fact. But for things which stay put I take my time to compose before clicking the shutter.

In digital photography, cropping means lose of resolution and detail, so it is best to do it right at the moment of capture then trying to fix things in Photoshop after the fact. Photoshop is not magic, you know. The best Photoshop jobs do not look like it was ever Photoshopped. And I am not a one of those wizards who can wield magic. So I try to do it right where I can.

Yin and Yang motifs seen at an open air plaza in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Unlike Western modernist architectural forms in the Bauhaus tradition which are heavily driven by orthogonal forms, curves play a big part in connecting elements together in China to create flows which echo with the humanistic qualities better than straight lines.

A collage of forms, accented by the echoes of colors and lines.

The afternoon sun casts a warm shadow of a baby carriage on the footbridge. Below the bridge, a man in blue sweater walks casually across a zebra crossing. The lines of the zebra crossing is shielded by the bridge, thus it would appear as if the man is on the same plane when in fact is is very far away. The S in “SLOW” is obscured so you see the word “LOW” instead. The white markings not the road leads the eye to the lower right as well as the upper right, which is the entrance to a car park, where the yellow warning signs echo nicely with the warm glow of the afternoon sun.

Unlike mainland China, bicycles are not considered a primary form of transportation. But bicycle lanes are everywhere in Ma On Shan, and people do ride it everywhere. Cycling is a good form of exercise.

In Hong Kong, you can ride along the 3.2 km long Ma On Shan promenade spanning an area of 5.2 hectares (sometimes pictured in my “Serenity” series) while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Tolo Harbor and Sha Tin Hoi.

I don’t exercise much these days so I might get a bike to do it. Of interest: although the promenade itself is a smoke-free zone, ashtrays are provided along the cycling lane. I don’t think that I have ever biked and smoked before. There will always be a first time, I suppose.

A fisherman sped through calm waters on a lazy afternoon at Tolo Harbour in Hong Kong.

I love the forms on water she is left behind. In many ways it is not dissimilar to the slow-motion time-lapsed photography of gun shots tearing wooden planks.

I feel that it is important to have a shot with the name clearly spelled out so this is a shot for that.

I bought the 100-400 rather recently and have not tested fully how far the depth of field would go so I shot many of the photos for this set in the f/8 range where possible.

For most of the Canon lenses, the f/8 is generally the sweet spot. Many people think that stopping further would be sharper, but actually when you go towards f/22, optical diffraction would become noticeable and thus rendering the image “less sharp” overall.

I only had one shot at this so not having had much experience with this lens, I just went with something at f/8 range—thankfully the Canon EOS 6D’s high ISO range is quite usable, unlike the 7D.

When I was at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade photographing the Victoria Harbour yesterday, a gigantic celestial object appeared near the mountains. At first I thought that it was the sunset, but it appeared in the east. It is of course the full moon. A rather unexpected yet very welcoming sighting.

I photographed this handheld. The 100-400 was affixed on the 7D, which is fairly noisy (perhaps the 7D2 would fair better?) Technically full moon is tonight, but the moon could not be seen in Hong Kong’s cloudy sky. So I thought I would process this capture instead. It is eerie yet wonderfully magnificent.

The Art Basel 2013 photos will continue after this short break.

These wooden shed-like structures were found inside a park in Hong Kong.

Unlike normal sheds which actually shields the rain, it is left bare and slotted with the bare frame. Ivy-like plants are then planted on them to create something which can best be described as half man-made and half naturally formed. When the plants are finally growing, they do function somewhat like a small tree.

I was wrong—it seems that you do still need a pano head even with modern technology.

Previously I made the opinion that modern software should be able to stitch these images shot using normal pan heads [1] and that the pano head is mostly a luxury items. But when I actually worked on the image it appears that I was very wrong about it.

As you see here the seams a highly problematic at the near end of the lens. The far end is always going got be ok, but he near end poses challenge for Hugin it would appear.

SML Apologies—but I never said that I am always right.

This 360-degree pano is stitched using 24 full-resoltion 7D RAW files. Trust that when I get a pano head I will revisit this.

More intersections between different buildings. This one is between a car park and a trash room for a shopping mall. Looks like tree branches in winter, or it could also be a leaf. :)

Often the simplest things are the most beautiful. This is the underside of a leaf of a variety of palm trees grown in Hong Kong. Exact species unknown.

These gigantic letters “LHA” which identify the ship can be seen on the hull of the USS Peleliu.

The ship’s structural metal beams create an interesting contrast with the extruded letterings. Visually they bear similarities to the Hollywood sign echoed by some beam lights as seen in the animated identity of 20th Century Fox. It is probably just a coincidence but it is interesting to me nonetheless.

So what are LHAs exactly? According to the United States Navy, an LHA is the largest of all amphibious warfare ships. It resembles a small aircraft carrier and is capable of Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL), Short Take-Off Vertical Landing (STOVL), Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) tilt-rotor and Rotary Wing (RW) aircraft operations [1, 2].
