These lockers seen at the Supercell Headquarters in Helsinki are intended to be used by visitors.
They’re beautifully designed. The staggered forms of small, medium, and large sizes create visual rhythm that makes it pleasing to look at.
Turning utilitarian objects into artistic expressions that delights is an aspect that’s often overlooked by brands.
Everything can be and should always be designed. When you show attention to detail in the smallest things that no one else care about, it’s a testimony to the other things that you do care about.
That’s what makes a brand stand out.

These are the stadium seatings inside the Bird’s Nest National Stadium. Most of the chairs were painted in a deep red color. Some chairs were painted in white, which would make more sense if you look at the whole stadium as a whole—they form a gradated pattern from the bottom to the top. This would be clearer once I posted a panoramic shot of the stadium.

It is not a skyscraper if it does not touch the sky. And on a foggy day like this, the International Commerce Centre (環球貿易廣場 ICC) certainly does [1] (pictured right). Besides being the tallest building in Hong Kong, it is currently the world’s fourth tallest building and the five-star Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong hotel currently occupies floors 102 to 118.
The red building to the left is The Arch (凱旋門). It is an 81-floor 231-metre (758 feet) tall skyscraper completed in 2006. It is currently the third-tallest residential building in Hong Kong and is made up of four towers. The towers join at the 69th floor to form an arch with the top floors and thus was named “The Arch” [2].
In the middle is another residential skyscraper called The Harbourside (君臨天下) [3]. It is a 255 m (836.6 ft) tall residential skyscraper which features many “Feng Shui Holes 風水洞” originally seen only at the luxury high-rise at the Southern District in Hong Kong. In Chinese mythology, the dragons flow from the north to the south and so architects decided to make “holes” for the dragon to pass through. Accordingly, the apartments near these holes are more expensive than the rest.
Altogether these building complex together with several other few and the shopping mall Elements make up what is called the “Union Square” area of Hong Kong in West Kowloon.

This is a close-up view of the Beijing National Aquatics Center (北京國家游泳中心), otherwise known as the Water Cube (水立方). It was built alongside the Bird’s Nest in the Olympic Green for the swimming competitions of the 2008 Summer Olympics.
I have seen it in media a lot but have never been in person until now. It really does look like a lot of water bubbles. Up close, you will see that the facade is translucent with its supporting frame somewhat exposed. At night, it also puts on a light show. But personally I prefer the daytime view better.

In Hong Kong, the presence of holes in some skyscrapers is a fascinating aspect of architectural design deeply rooted in feng shui, an ancient Chinese practice that empharsizes harmony with nature and the flow of energy, or qi.
These holes, ofter referred to as “dragon gates,” serve a symbolic purpose, allowing mythical dragons to traverse freely between the mountains and the sea, thereby facilitating the movement of positive energy throughout the buildings.

Arrays of similar things have always interested me. On the surface, they all look the same, but then when you look closer, they all have minute differences among them. Macro vs micro.

As usual, I feel that one cannot fully comprehend an architectural space without a panorama, so here is one such. This shows the inside of the main arena, with the exposed skylight, which is both functional and beautiful. Form follows function.

I was not sure what this was when I photographed this, but it appears that Beijing is building an observation deck for the Olympic Park. When completed, the tower will stand 243m tall. It is designed by Shi Yingfang, Li Lei and Wen Yaling. The form of the architecture looks very similar to the organic lamp post nearby.
This would be very much welcome. The area currently lacks a good vantage point to photograph the wonderful architectures inside the park.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the reflection at the river was the oil paintings by Gustav Klimt [1] — in particular, the abstract geometric forms seen in his “golden phase.” Although it is often hard to say how an artist pick up his particular style of painting, it does make me wonder if Klimt has passed by some water surface near European castles, which under the afternoon sun create some fantastic abstract as seen here — though in this case it is just some residential building which has no architectural quality to speak of, though within the reflection they are very much desired.
Noting this, I would probably go back and shoot some videos as they are quite interesting to look at.

How do you paint with photography? By creating composition of forms from the surroundings around you. I picked up photography because it’s a way to see — it’s how I see the world.
The understanding of forms is best understood when you can find representative structure in space that you could capture on a 2D plane.
It’s like music — but rhythm, melody, and harmony in space. Sometimes it’s hard to even describe what these things are.
Often, it’s a feeling. Emotion is hard to describe. This is an abstract painting about monochromatic blues, accented by the tip of a white paint and shades of gold in the shadow.

Sunset is a good time for photography—not only for landscapes, but also for architecture. The sun is just bright enough to give some color to the buildings. It is also late enough so the lights are turned on. The unevenly lit office lighting create interests in the facade.
This is the facade of Jardine House, one of my favorite architectures in Hong Kong. The dotted patterns give it interests, and at night it looks like an array of musical notes. I have been photographing this building from the north side, but it seems that this vantage point from Connaught Road C is best. So I might do some long exposure with a tripod some time in the future.

In traditional Chinese architecture, the roof-figures always form a marching procession (lower right). At the tail of the procession will be an imperial dragon, representing the authority of the state. At the head of the procession will be a man riding a Phoenix.
In between will be mythical beasts, usually an odd number of them. The number of beasts indicate the importance of duties performed within the group of buildings nearby. The maximum number of beasts is nine. Here at entrance hall of the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine (國民革命忠烈), there are five in total (dragon + 5 + man riding Phoenix).
The best examples of these figures can be found at the Forbidden City in Beijing, which shall be posted later in the stream (taken on a separate trip).

The Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, has been photographed tirelessly since its opening. That makes it harder to find a point of view that may be of interest.
I have often found its roof to be most interesting, so I try to capture its spirit in an abstract manner. To get this view, you really need a long lens—400mm here—because there is no way to get the same view up close with a wide angle. This also shows that the 100-400 is not just for birds and moons photos. It definitely has its use even when traveling.

This is where I live. Not this particular tower but another one close to the promenade. No feng shui holes here but who needs feng shui holes when you the air is free of pollution and birds are singing outside?
When this place was first built, there was absolutely nothing around the complex, and it truly felt like a paradise. But alas the space in Hong Kong is tight but very soon the development is surrounded by other buildings, including some public housing development which is seen also at the top of the capture.

I have to take a break from my photojournalism, so here is a panoramic view of the Hong Kong Coliseum (香港體育館), photographed recently when I went to attend a lecture but could not hear a thing because the sound projection at the “mountain top” was dismal at best. So as usual, I took the opportunity to do photography instead.
The coliseum is better known amongst the public as the Hung Hom Coliseum (紅磡體育館, 紅館). Although it was built for sports originally, it was mostly used for pop music concerts and other large performance events which need to house a large amount of audience. Opened in 1983, it seats 12,500 people and is the second largest indoor facility in Hong Kong, only behind the AsiaWorld-Arena opened in 2005.
The seats to the top of the audience stage is intimately known as the “山頂” (mountain top) mostly because it was so far away from the stage. But as you can see, it offers a fantastic view for panoramic photography.
Stitched using 10 full res RAW captures with the 6D + 17-40 f/4L. Processed using Autopano Giga 3, a new pano stitching software I just bought and am trying out.

IFC Tower 2 is currently the second tallest architecture in Hong Kong. It is 415 meters in length, and is quoted as having 88 storeys and 22 high-ceiling trading floors [1]. The number 8 in Cantonese sounds like “fortune” whereas the number 2 in Cantonese sounds like “easy”—together it means get rich easily. Chinese are crazy like that.
The building is designed by César Pelli & Association Architects and Rocco Design Architects Limited. Besides being very tall I am never really quite fond of them. I like architecture with character, not just another phallic skyscraper.
However, I have always found the “claws” on its roof to be interesting, and I can finally reached its height! This was shot from ground level with the 100-400 at 400mm so you can see just how amazing it is. I am still getting used to the zoom level and it simply is incredible—along with the 6D this is one of my best buys in recent years.

I wanted to see what the depth of field, bokeh and sharpness when the 100-400 is wide open at f/5.6 at 400mm, so I shot this. If you zoom in up close you can see that the lens resolution is good, ads I can make out pieces of hair under the sparrow’s cheeks. The bokeh is creamy but it does look somewhat odd at these geometric forms as it also seems like there is a ghosted image. It could also have been the IS. It is unclear.

Someone on Facebook asked me how I could love the architectures designed Frank Gehry as well as Norman Foster. He sees them in different genres because they follow very different methods of construction, but I see them as the same—as pure expression of forms. While Gehry’s architecture is sculpturally organic and Foster’s designs feature very geometric compositions, they are ultimately about the beauty of forms. My art education from Yale is based in Bauhaus, so perhaps my appreciation of forms differs from his Harvard GSD background.
This is a handheld panorama of Terminal 1 at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). It was stitched together using nine 6D full-res RAW captures with the 17-40. I still haven’t bought a pano head yet so parallax is a bit of an issue, but I am planning on getting one any day now.
My mom saw some panorama shots I took recently and asked me if it was a single shot because I have been raving about the super wide angle I was able to achieve with the 17-40 + full frame 6D body. No—a full frame body cannot really achieve wider than 180-degree shots—perhaps a fish eye lens can but I do not yet have one. 8-15 f/4L looks good, will do some research perhaps.

A sparrow grabs onto a metal stick readying self for flight.
I am mostly attracted to how the angle of its tail and body echo with the rope and metal structure it is standing on. The metal structure is used as man made bones for a young tree at the promenade (I am not exactly sure what they are called, but I am certain that the biologists from my extensive social media network would know better).
Every time I post photographs of birds, I am surprised by how loved they are by humans, so I will try to post more of these in the future, now that I realize that the 100-400 makes for an excellent macro lens.

Aside from photojournalism, the core focus of my photography from day 1 has been form composition. It is mostly an extension of graphic design education really. In graphic design, the objective is to create a balanced layout using type and images.
Using the urban environment as an ever-changing puzzle, I try to capture what I feel is balanced an interesting, and that is really all there is to it.
I did not get very far in the analog days mainly because there is a hidden cost to time and materials, but when digital photography came about to be reasonably priced, I bought one in 1997—a 640x480 Sony Mavica FD-7 for $999USD which stores images on the floppy disks.
Obviously technology has advanced quite a bit these days but Forms remain an active focus. This was shot at a hard-surfaced soccer pitch in Hong Kong. It is best described as a wet dream for photographers like me—filled with curves and lines ready to be framed and composed.

The first day when I arrived, the Queen Mary 2 (QM2) was parked at the city harbour. The gigantic transatlantic ocean liner makes the Sydney Opera House nearby look infinitely small. The clash of the two creates an interesting montage of curved forms. It stayed there for a couple of days and was gone soon after. So I was glad that I took the photo before I was even settled in.
Photographed with the 6D + 24-70 f/2.8L at the Rocks, Sydney, Australia.

Nature has a very magical property: under the right condition, one can look like another.
This looks like an aerial view of a snowy mountain, but in fact is a 11 second long exposure of the sea. The white streaks are mostly a result of the sunlight being reflected on the moving water surface. Eleven seconds is a long time for water to travel, and so it renders a rather unexpected capture.
In my mind, I had imagined that it would leave a long trail of something, but I too did not expect these results. Trust that I will be trying this more in the future, perhaps with a wider lens also.
The uneven exposure on the left side of the frame is somewhat unfortunate—it comes from the shadow of the building I am in. I tried to fix it a bit inside Photoshop but perhaps I should just try to avoid this spot next time.

When I was young, I took the train to school everyday. Trains in Hong Kong are very crowded during rush hours, and when I was still little, when I look outside the window, all I see are these wires—wires coming together, wires coming apart, wires splitting, wires joining.
I have always wanted to photograph them but they are always so far away. Now that the 100-400 + 7D gives me an effective 640mm zoom, I finally get to have a clear look at them, and they are even more magical then I once imagined.
Pictured is a small section of them near the Heng On MTR station. The architecture in the back is the roof of some of the public housing development in Hong Kong.

A man jogs on the blue jogging trail at the Ma On Shan Promenade in the morning while an old lady walks behind him.
Although I have a huge problem with most of the color choices that the Hong Kong Government makes regarding most of their architecture, I absolutely love the color for this path against the greens around it.

This is the facade of the Water Cube (水立方) looking from the inside to the outside. The outer wall is based on the Weaire–Phelan structure, a structure devised from the natural pattern of bubbles in soap lather. Each bubble has its own unique shape—no single shape is alike. Ground was broken on December 24, 2003, and the Center was completed and handed over for use on January 28, 2008.
The total construction cost was ¥940 million yuan / $ 140 million USD / € 94 million EUR. Architects responsible for the work include PTW Architects, CSCEC, CCDI, and Arup.

Kam Tai Court (錦泰苑) is a HOS court in Ma On Shan, built on the reclaimed land along Tide Cove shoreline, near MTR Tai Shui Hang Station. It has totally 12 blocks completed in 2000.
Sometimes in rendering photographs like these I am a bit undecided if I should push their contrasts and vibrance. The photograph was taken on a cloudy day, so it lacks color details. I also never really liked this shade of teal/green. They “feel” like public toilets to me. I can’t quite explain why.
From afar it would seem that the dark green was painted to echo with the greens of the mountain next to it (馬鞍山 Ma On Shan) but as Heidi Klum likes to say in Project Runway, matchie-matchie is no style at all. I tend to agree with that philosophy.

The Innovation Tower [1] designed by Pritzker-prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid [2] for Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Design is one of those amazing architectures which I have been following since its inception—and am so glad to see it being built.
Zaha Hadid is one of my all time favorite architects, and this building will be her first permanent architectural works in Hong Kong—but hopefully not the last. As many people in the architecture world know, what is seen on paper rarely get built, so it was truly amazing to see this in person yesterday when I went to do location scouting at the PolyU yesterday.
The bamboo scaffolding has just started to be taken apart. For those who are unfamiliar with Chinese traditional structural engineering, almost all buildings in Hong Kong were built in this manner [3]. Not only are bamboo scaffolding uses nylon straps to tie knots as couplers. They are structurally strong yet light enough to carry around, thus speeding up the process to build skyscrapers both efficiently and safely.

This green fence surrounding the soccer pitch has my name written all over it. I see it, because I am not normal. You don’t, because maybe you are human.
Also you from this you can see why I had to use a long lens. It is close to impossible to use a wide angle lens to photograph people playing sports inside because there are no elevated platforms surrounding these fields, and so the only way to photograph what is happening inside is through these frames with extremely tight openings.

Contrast makes for interesting compositions.
In colors: orange vs blue. In materials: reflective vs matte surfaces. In age: old vs new. In size: large vs small. In forms: curves vs lines. In proportion: majority vs minority. In brightness: dark vs light.
When all the elements are there they sing to my eyes. Everyday found art in the urban landscape is a living poetry waiting for the eyes to explore.
The thing which applies to photography also applies to design. The visual art language is the same for food—food tastes best when it hits all the taste buds: sweet, sour, salty, heat. Visual pleasures work best when it hits all the visual notes: hues, colors, brightness, proportion, size.

This highly recognisable building requires no introduction. It is of course the Bird’s Nest in Beijing. Officially known as the National Stadium, it was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
I have wanted to photograph this architecture since its inception, and am happy to finally have seen it. The architecture was designed by Herzog & de Meuron. It is both a visual as well as structural marvel.

Round 3: The lines becomes curve for this one.
The building on the left is Exchange Square. The one on the right is still Jardine House. With its circular windows, Jardine House has an interesting facade which makes it beautiful to photograph. In many ways, when I first saw the Maritime Hotel in New York, the first thing I was reminded of is how much better Jardine House looks comparatively speaking.
This photo might look better in black and white—so it will be processed as such later—if I have learned anything looking at the Flickr stream of Thomas Hawk, it is that interleaving photographs from different places and series generally look better than streaming the same kind of photos continuously. Diversity makes life interesting…

Designed by Arquitectonica, the building complexes at 貝沙灣 Residence Bel-Air located at 數碼港 Cyberport feature many of the key ingredients in Hong Kong’s luxury residential properties, as well as some WTF sceneries:
+ “風水洞 Feng Shui Hole”, the hole in the middle of the building which allows the dragon to fly through.
+ High density which soars to the sky. Higher density means more space around for scenery. This allows everyone to have a good view.
+ Ocean view. No one wants to be looking at humans when they are indoors. Well, I don’t.
+ Clothes hanging dry on the balcony. Hong Kong does not have a lot of space so everyone regardless of their income level dry their clothes outside. Truly WTF, yes I know.
+ Swimming pool with a view. This seems almost standard. There is a swimming pool at my place, too. But alas they are always surrounded by buildings so if you are super-private like me you will never swim there. Public swimming pools actually are more private because at least no one can see you.
Pictured is the view from the balcony of one of the apartments at 貝沙灣 Residence Bel-Air. Stitched together using 16 RAW captures with the 6D + 17-40 f/4L, processed with Autopano Giga 3.0 and Lightroom 4.

A collage of forms which create a nice “swoop” in the form of the letter “J“ at the back alley of 港威大道 Gateway Boulevard, the back alley which connects every single shopping mall complex at 廣東道 Canton Road including the 港威大廈 Gateway Tower, 海港城 Harbour City, 海洋中心 Ocean Centre and 海運大廈 in Tsim Sha Shui, Hong Kong.

The 7D is back from the shop (3,000 HKD for main board switching after water damage—ouch!). The first thing I tested is to see how far the 400mm can reach from the aerial view peering down from the 27th floor.
Pretty far it seems.

A man running on red tracks in black shorts and cyan sneakers.
I had originally not wanted to post this because it was shot without a model release. But it is a perfect collage of forms + human forms. So what the heck—if he happened upon my Flickr stream the worse is that he would ask me to put it down for good. Not a big problem.
Maybe what I should do in the future is find a runner who can sign me a model release but I honestly do not know where to find people to do TFCD in Hong Kong.

A collage of forms seen at the Ma On Shan Sports Grounds. Bright colors seem to be a main stay in sporting arena regardless of location in the world. Blue and yellow stripes always work. It looks like an Adidas retro sneaker to me. The circular rubber band and the curvature from the seats add a little bit of contrast without dominating.
If I could paint, this is what I would paint as well. As such this is part of the SML Paintings series also.

I had always assumed that the best lens to do macro with a creamy bokeh like this is to use a wide angle lens. I was wrong. The best lens to use appear to be a super telephoto.

Every weekend, crew teams from different universities practice at Tolo Harbour. Pictured is the team from The University of Hong Kong (HKU 香港大學), noted by its abbreviation 港大 seen on the tank top of of of its crew members. According to their Facebook page [1], the club has been around since 1981.
I am particularly drawn to the delicate lines of the boats as well as the patterns each cox makes on the water surface.
I have attempted multiple times to capture them on video but it is fairly hard with my current setup. The 7D combined with the 100-400mm gives a combined equivalent focal length of 640mm on the zoomed-out side. This means any minute movement will result in camera shake.
At the moment I do not have any geared head and anyone with a ball head knows that getting precise positioning in a quick action shot is not really doable. I guess I will just have to get closer to the surface — but by the time I reach the ground floor they are usually gone. Tricky business.

Repetitive yet dissimilar forms are most beautiful. Form follows function.
This staircase found at a public housing estate in Hong Kong features bright yellow paints painted on each step to help the predominantly elderly retired residents as they walk up each way.
SML Universe corporate colors are good for some things—even the Hong Kong Government seems to agree.

I went to PolyU to see a drama performance last week, and just like my sources at the university has mentioned, the bamboo scaffolding on the Innovation Tower is completely gone, and now you can see the organic forms of this magnificent architecture soaring to the sky.
As I last wrote [1], Zaha Hadid is one of my all-time favorite architects, and this will be her first permanent fixture in Hong Kong. Truly it is incredible.
I was just passing by, and it was super late at night, but here you see why usable high ISO matters. This was shot with the 6D + 17-40. It was shot handheld with 3 exposures. Without a tripod it is not really technically ideal to try at HDR but thanks to the modern marvels of technology, the features are aligned nicely.
Trust that I will go back during the daytime when I have a chance.

The semi-reflective marble facade of this financial architecture in Hong Kong reminds me of the forms and color palette often used by George Braque, a French painter and sculptor who, along with Pablo Picasso, developed the art style known as Cubism.
