Seattle’s Smith Tower was built in 1914. At 38 stories, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi until 1931. (wikipedia). Here you can see its well known steeply pointed roof, shining in the sun, but not looking so tall any more.

Today was the second time I've ever been in the Smith Tower. The first time was in the summer of 1968, when we delivered Grandpa's artificial leg (after he died) to a business there that recycled them for poor people. The elevator operator found my story a little creepy, I think. ;-)

The Smith Oaks rookery is not very active anymore at this time! In the earlier months it is a beehive of nesting activity. The water is very green! High Island, Texas.

Smith Rock State Park is an American state park located in central Oregon's High Desert near the communities of Redmond and Terrebonne. Its sheer cliffs of tuff and basalt are ideal for rock climbing of all difficulty levels. Smith Rock is generally considered the birthplace of modern American sport climbing, and is host to cutting-edge climbing routes. It is popular for sport climbing. The geology of Smith Rocks is volcanic. It is made up of layers of recent basalt flows overlaying older Clarno ash and tuff formations. Approximately 30 million years ago, a large caldera was formed when overlying rock collapsed into an underground lava chamber. This created a huge amount of rock and ash debris that filled the caldera. That material solidified into rock, becoming Smith Rock tuff. A half million years ago, basalt lava flows from nearby volcanoes covered the older tuff. More recently, the Crooked River cut its way through the layers of rock to create today's geographic features. Smith Rock itself is a 3,200-foot (980 m)-high ridge (above sea level) with a sheer cliff-face overlooking a bend in the Crooked River (elev. 2600 ft), making the cliffs about 600 feet high.

Panic

The Smiths

1986

UK #11

‘Panic on the streets of London

Panic on the streets of Birmingham

I wonder to myself

Could life ever be sane again?

The Leeds side-streets that you slip down

I wonder to myself’

This song was written in reaction to the BBC DJ, Steve Wright playing the Wham! track "I'm Your Man," immediately after a news report on the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Morrissey observed ‘the music that they constantly play, it says nothing to me about my life.’

This is the view from the top of Richmond Hill tunnel in Leeds. It’s a cityscape that has changed enormously over the years.

The very prominent building is the Department of Health and Social Security head office, known locally as ‘The Kremlin’. It opened in 1993 on a site that was previously occupied by the ‘Quarry Hill Flats’ which were built in the 1930s and at the time were the largest social housing complex in the UK. Here’s a link to an article about the current building. Leeds Quarry House: www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/go-inside-kremlin-lee...

By the 1980s the flats suffered considerable social and structural problems. As a child, I remember riding past them on the bus into town and they always seemed quite scary. Here’s a link to some pictures and a little about the history of the flats. www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/people/leeds-quarry-h...

On the extreme left of the image is Leeds Town Hall, whilst on the right is where stone trains from Rylstone would deposit their load at the Tilcon depot.

It’s an area where further development is taking place, with some very expensive looking apartments being built just out of view to the left.

I spent a long three day weekend in Central Oregon. Felt good to get out of Portland for awhile and up onto the high desert. Each morning it snowed a bit so I headed to Smith Rock to see how it looked all dressed in winter, although by the time sundown happened most of the snow was gone. Still it was great to be out there. The entire time I was shooting I saw no other people and heard no other voices. Then on the hike back out I saw a pair of golden eagles and a pair of bald eagles, capping off an afternoon spent in one of my favorite places in Oregon.

Smith Rock , Redmond Oregon. A cool park that my bud Ted took me to.

One of my favorite views while hiking The Misery Trail over the larger massif at Smith Rock.

Crooked River winds it's way around this impressive smaller formation. There is such a primordial, primal feel to this place that was spellbinding and enthralling.

I should have stood here at first light (next time). Regrettably the rest of the hike was facing into the sun, albeit covered frequently by storm clouds. This was a challenge to process, with most of the features being in shadow.

Of all the places I was blessed to visit this year, Smith Rock was my favorite. Easy to see why it is one of Oregon's most visited state parks.

Thanks for hiking along with me.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Wow.. first time I get to see this plane in the flesh… in a remote northern compacted gravel strip… CJF3.. Ile a La Crosse

Ted Smith flew the first Aerostar 600 in October 1967. It was a mid-wing cantilever monoplane powered by two wing-mounted Avco Lycoming piston engines, with a tricycle landing gear. It was fitted with luxury accommodation for six. Also produced, and the base of most of the subsequent models, was a version with turbocharged engines, the Aerostar 601.

During the time of production, the Aerostar held the speed record for fastest twin piston general aviation aircraft,[1] capable of cruise speeds from 220 kn (408 km/h) for the earliest 600 models to 261 kn (483 km/h) for the later 700 models. Light construction, low drag and high powered engines also contribute to fast climb rates.

Piper gobbled up Ted Smith....now it is called Piper 601P
