44 Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC training Indonesians in surf reel and belt, Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia. September 1977
Mark (Coco) Crampton and Made put the morning squad through their drill. If none of the trainees in this squad had any military training it didn't seem to matter. They quickly adapted to the precision required of drill movements. They were also very stoic in the face of discomfort. We had imagined that with their dark complexions the sun would not trouble the Indonesians. This was not the case. Most of our trainees were unaccustomed to a day in the full sun sans shirt or hat. They burned dreadfully and peeled in great wads of skin. Even my very fair braw Scots complexion tolerated the sun better than our poor trainees. None complained however and it was only when one or two shyly requested that we share our sunscreen cream that we understood that they were suffering severe burns. Immediately we purchased litres of sunburn lotion and we gave them our shirts to wear when out of the water.
