With their diminutive size (between 6" and 10" tall) and fluffy sleep-sunning, one would never blame you for confusing an Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio) as cute. Seriously, look at how adorably it blends in with the tree bark! But that would be foolhardy, especially if you're smaller than a screech owl and look tasty. Unlike the saw-whet owls, whose natural defense is to stand firm on their branches, the screech owl roosts in tree cavities, where it waits out bad weather and daytime. In the cold of winter, you will occasionally find one who has come out of his hole to collect the sun's warmth, as this little one is doing...sunning itself and contemplating its meals? Mouse tartare, perhaps?

Old railway sleepers in a row on the shore of the lagoon and Bega River at Mogareeka near Tathra on the Far South Coast of NSW.
Lugduff rises 608m to its highest point and borders part of the longest glacial valley [8km] in Ireland [Glenmalure] with a ridgeway of 5km. I always love the light on this mountain as its forever changing. The old railway sleepers help when crossing the wet ground which is dotted with "dancing" bog cotton flowers at this time of year. They are replacing the timbers at the moment as they are rotten, and maybe this time they might get it straight though in all honesty I really hope not!!!

C505 and BRM001 work train 9343 from Port Kembla to Goolgowie, past the excess stockpile of sleepers delivered to Gunning following a derailment last year that destroyed 8km worth of sleepers.

Having just finished a night shift I noticed the Sunrise was going to be nice and clear and also that the Caledonian Sleeper was running via the ECML. However I didnt think that it was the Moon that was going to make my shot this morning, not the Sun. A stroke of luck as I literally just beat the train to Burton Coggles and switched to my long lens. Sadly I didnt get the focus right and had to whack the ISO right up but it still represents my first shot of the Moon used as a backdrop to my Train photo
The working was 92010 and was running as 1E39 Inverness to London Kings Cross
During the period when the ECS was sent to Glasgow for servicing 37404 takes it back to Fort William on 20/9/1995.
The train is running above Loch Treig and has just left the tunnel built when the line was diverted to a higher level to accomodate the raising of the loch capacity

SCT012 and SCT001 prepare to pass the long wall of sleepers sitting beside the down main at Gunning with 2BM9.
The wall of sleepers were all dropped off for a 5km long derailment that destroyed thousands of sleepers late last year, and more than was required were ordered. They will be eventually used up for other local projects in the future.

37403 and 73968 lead 1B16 2036 (Suns) Aberdeen to London Euston sleeper portion off the Tay Bridge past the South box.

Door werkzaamheden in het weekend van 8 en 9 maart 2025, op het baanvak Roosendaal-Essen, moest de European Sleeper 1278 omgeleid worden. Als alternatieve route werd de trein vanaf Eindhoven omgeleid via grensovergang Visé om zo bestemming Brussel-Zuid te bereiken. Tot Eindhoven bleef de rit ongewijzigd, echter door beperkte capaciteit op station Eindhoven moest de trein kopmaken in Boxtel. Vanaf Boxtel reed de trein verder als trein 1279 en konden de reizigers nu wel in Eindhoven uitstappen.
Deze uitzonderlijke route was reden genoeg om er achter aan te gaan. Het voordeel van deze route was dat ook de rit met 1700 gunstig voor de zon zou rijden, wat met haar gebruikelijke route niet zo is.
TCS 101001 met European Sleeper (uit Venetië) van Boxtel via Maastricht naar Brussel-Zuid, als trein 1279 passeert ter hoogte van Weert.

In 2012 reed nog dagelijks de nachttrein tussen Praag, Warschau, Kopenhagen en Amsterdam, met koerswagens naar Zwitserland. De delen uit Warschau en Praag werden in Berlijn Ostbahnhof gecombineerd tot 1 grote trein naar Amsterdam, via Hannover waar de rijtuigen naar Kopenhagen en Zwitserland uit de trein werden gerangeerd en de rijtuigen uit Kopenhagen naar Amsterdam er weer in. Het deel vanuit Praag werd aangebracht door een Knödelpresse van de České dráhy uit de serie 371. Op 23 september 2012 werd er na de PKP IC naar het station Berlin Ostbahnhof gereisd om deze trein te fotograferen. Kort voor twaalf uur 's nachts kwam het deel vanuit Praag aan met de CD 371 001, twee groene CD intercity rijtuigen en de nachttrein bestaande uit rijtuigen voor Amsterdam, Kopenahgen en Zürich. Voordat de locomotief met de eerste twee rijtuigen ging rangeren werd deze eerst gefotografeerd waardoor mijn eerste České dráhy foto een feit was.

In 2012 the nighttrain between Warsaw, Prague, Copenhagen and Amsterdam, with single wagens to Switzerland was still driving every day. The two parts from Warsaw and Prague were combined at the station of Berlin Ostbahnhof to one train to Amsterdam, via Hannover where the coaches to Switzerland and Copenhagen left the train, and new coaches from Copenhagen were added. The part from Prague was traditionally hauled by a locomotive of the series 371. On the night of 23 September 2012 was decided to take pictures of this train and after the departure of the PKP IC, we traveld to the station Berlin Ostbahnhof. Shortly before midnight the part from Prague arrived at the station, hauled by the České dráhy 371 001. Together with sleepertrain there were two intercity wagons which served as a normal intercity from Prague to Berlin. After the picture was taken the locomotive shunted togehter with the two carriages off the train, and left the sleeper coaches waiting for the part from Warsaw.
