St Nicholas’ Church

Situated in Arne Road, Arne, DORSET BH20 5BJ

The church was built in the early 13th century by the order of the Abbess of Shaftsbury and dedicated to St Nicholas of Myra. The building was first a chantry (a building dedicated to the saying of prayers or singing of hymns). It was then annexed by the Holy Trinity Church, Wareham as a Chapel of Ease (St Nicholas was a church used by the parishioners of Wareham to attend when it was too difficult to attend their main church).

The church consists of a body and a chancel, under one roof with a porch and a buttress. The architecture is early English. The East window is a triple lancet and can be used to dating the church to about 1220. There are a few other 13th lancet windows on both north and south walls. The walls are ironstone and the roof is tiled and partly stone slates. It is remarkably unchanged since its early construction.

There is a bell but no tower. The bell is hung in the roof space at the west end of the church. The original bell was installed in 1625 but then replaced in 1782. This new bell cast by the company Chapman and Mears. There were restorations in the 19th century and in 1952 but I cannot find out what they were.

The church is sat upon a mound and has a fine view from the altar window over the harbour. It has also won an award for the quality of wildflowers in the Churchyard.

This farm at Starzelalpe in Austria is situated "far from the madding crowd": it is high up (1678m) at the end of the Duratal, where there are no roads - just trails - to cross the mountains.

We reached the farm on a hike from the Schwarzwassertal, over the ridge and then steeply down to this farm. I'll be posting more photos of this walk later on.

The Starzelalpe farm is really secluded, more than an hour's walk from the nearest village, Baad, at the end of the Kleinwalsertal. The triangular wall at the end of the farm that faces the steep slope behind it is a local way of protecting farms from the threat of avalanches. [Explored on 23/02/2022, #94]

Situated immediately S of the Alyth-Glenshee public road some 620m NW of Smyrna cottage there are the remains of a farmstead comprising five buildings and a kiln arranged around the sides of two separate enclosures. The farmstead was known as Cowstyle and was in existence in 1682 (J Meikle 1925) but abandoned by 1863 (OS 6-inch map, Perthshire, sheet 42).

1. The NW building measures 16m WNW-ESE by 4.9m over turf-covered wall-footings (1m thick and 0.3m high) and is situated within the NE end of an enclosure which has been sub-divided close to its SW end.

2. Situated close to the ESE end of (1) there is a levelled platform (8.1m WNW-ESE by 4.3m overall) which has probably served as a stance for a timber building.

3. Situated a few metres ESE of (2) there are the remains of a two-compartment building measuring 9.7m WNW-ESE by 3.8m over wall-footings up to 0.8m thick and 0.3m high. This structure is situated just outside the NE side of a small enclosure.

4. Situated on the NW side of the same enclosure there are the remains of a two-compartment building measuring 13m NE-SW by 4.4m over wall-footings 1m thick and 0.3m high.

5. The remains of a building or long pen are situated in the NE corner of the enclosure and measure 14m WNW-ESE by 3.5m over wall-footings 1m thick and 0.3m high.

6. Situated on the SE side of the enclosure very close to the SE corner there are the remains of a kiln which measures 2.1m in internal diameter and has a flue on the SW.

Robberg, situated 8km south of Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route, is not only a nature reserve, but also a national monument and World Heritage Site. Rocks from this region date back 120 million years to the break-up of Gondwanaland and evidence of middle and later Stone Age inhabitation has been found in a few of the caves along the peninsula.

The Robberg Hiking Trail is probably one of the most popular and well known trails in the area and also one of the most scenic. The route is a circular trail along the Robberg peninsula with two shorter variations available ranging from easy to moderate.

Loch Shiel is a freshwater loch situated 20 kilometres (12 mi) west of Fort William in the Highland council area of Scotland. At 28 kilometres long it is the 4th longest loch in Scotland, and is the longest to have retained a natural outflow without any regulation of its water level, being 120 m (393 ft) deep. Its nature changes considerably along its length, being deep and enclosed by mountains in the north east and shallow surrounded by bog and rough pasture in the south west, from which end the 4 km River Shiel drains to the sea in Loch Moidart near Castle Tioram.

The surrounding highlands are picturesque but relatively rarely climbed as none quite reaches the 3,000 ft (910 m) required for Munro status. A number of the hills are classified as Corbetts, including Beinn Resipol, Sgùrr Ghiubhsachain and Sgorr Craobh a' Chaorainn on the southern side of the loch; and Beinn Odhar Bheag on the northern side. The area is well wooded compared to the many Highland areas that have suffered from overgrazing. The view of the loch looking south from the Glenfinnan monument, showing wooded hillsides with bare summits rising steeply from a fjord-like loch, has become one of the most famous images of the Scottish Highlands. Several major films have used the loch for location shooting.

Loch Shiel is less than 10 metres above sea level, and was formed at the end of the last ice age when glacial deposits blocked what was formerly a sea loch.

Burano is situated 7 kilometres (4 miles) from Venice, a 40-minute trip by Venetian motorboats, "vaporetti".

The island is linked to Mazzorbo by a bridge. The current population of Burano is about 2,800. Originally, there were five islands and a fourth canal that was filled to become via e piazza Baldassare Galuppi, joining the former islands of San Martino Destra and San Martino Sinistra.

Burano is also known for its small, brightly painted houses, popular with artists. The colours of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; if someone wishes to paint their home, one must send a request to the government, who will respond by making notice of the certain colours permitted for that lot.

Other attractions include the Church of San Martino, with a leaning campanile and a painting by Giambattista Tiepolo (Crufixion, 1727), the Oratorio di Santa Barbara and the Museum and School of Lacemaking.

Situated just below Col de Champillon on the Italian stage of the Tour des Combins this mountain hut offers excellent hospitality and wonderful views of the surrounding peaks. This photo was taken soon after an early start from the hut and progress was slow because the unusual early morning light was constantly changing and it was impossible to stop taking photos. The peak on the left (Arete de Tcholeire) resembles the ruins of a medieval castle poking through the early morning mist and cloud.

Situated at the head of the Hodder valley in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire, England.

Situated in Sydney's Northern Beaches, Narrabeen Lake provides a delightful taste of Australian country while being surrounded by quite populous suburbs. It's circumnavigated by a track which is popular with cyclists and walkers alike.

To capture the wildness (combined with the human amenity aspect) of the place, I wanted a night scene with star trails. But I also wanted the light trails of passing cyclists. Obviously, if I set up this shot in the middle of the track, I'd be in the way - so the only answer was to do it deep in the dead of night (with plenty of moonlight to illuminate the scene), take my bike, then ride back and forth to produce the trails. Not one other person passed during the whole two hours of the shoot; but then, it did finish at about 2am, so maybe that's not altogether surprising.

So far, this has been the only shoot where I needed to take my bike, camera, tripod, stepladder (so the tripod could be set up high above the track) and a bag of lenses.

Bexhill or Bexhill-on-Sea is a seaside town situated in the county of East Sussex in South East England. An ancient town and part of the local-government district of Rother, Bexhill is home to a number of archaeological sites, a Manor House in the Old Town, an abundance of Edwardian and Victorian architecture, and the famous De La Warr Pavilion: today a centre for contemporary art – which has featured the work of Andy Warhol, Cerith Wyn Evans and Richard Wilson amongst others – and an auditorium, where Bob Marley had his first UK appearance and has since seen performances by Elvis Costello, Goldfrapp, Ray Davies, Years & Years, Patti Smith and Laurie Anderson.

The first reference to Bexhill, or Bexelei as it was originally called, was in a charter granted by King Offa of Mercia in 772 AD. It is recorded that King Offa had 'defeated the men of Hastings' in 771 AD. At this time, the term Hastings would have referred to this whole area rather than the town itself as it does today. In the charter, King Offa established a church and religious community in Bexhill.

During the Norman Conquest of 1066 it appears that Bexhill was largely destroyed. The Domesday survey of 1086 records that the manor was worth £20 before the conquest, was 'waste' in 1066 and was worth £18 10s in 1086. King William I used the lands he had conquered to reward his knights and gave Bexhill manor to Robert, Count of Eu, with most of the Hastings area. Robert's grandson, John, Count of Eu, gave back the manor to the bishops of Chichester in 1148 and it is probable that the first manor house was built by the bishops at this time. The later manor house, the ruins of which can still be seen at the Manor Gardens in Bexhill Old Town, was built about 1250, probably on the instructions of St. Richard, Bishop of Chichester. St Richard's Catholic College, the local Catholic school, was duly for said bishop. The Manor House was the easternmost residence owned by the bishops and would have been used as a place to stay while travelling around or through the eastern part of their diocese. There were often disputes between the Bishops of Chichester and the Abbots of Battle Abbey, usually about land ownership in this area. In 1276 a large portion of Bexhill was made into a park for hunting and in 1447 Bishop Adam de Moleyns was given permission to fortify the Manor House.

In 1561 Queen Elizabeth I took possession of Bexhill Manor and three years later she gave it to Sir Thomas Sackville, Earl of Dorset. The Earls, later Dukes, of Dorset owned Bexhill until the mid 19th century. Their main residences were Buckhurst Place in Sussex and Knole House in Kent.

In 1804 soldiers of the King's German Legion were stationed in barracks at Bexhill. These troops were Hanoverians who had escaped when their country was overrun by Napoleon's French Army. As King George III was also the Elector of Hanover, he welcomed them and they fought as part of the British Army. At about this time, defensive Martello Towers were built along the south east coast, some near Bexhill, in order to repel any French invasion. In 1814 the soldiers of the King's German Legion left Bexhill, eventually playing an important part in the Battle of Waterloo the following year. The German troops had been here to protect Bexhill from the French. However, many of the local people were actively trading with the enemy by way of smuggling. The best known of the local smugglers were in the Little Common Gang and the most famous incident was the infamous Battle of Sidley Green in 1828.

In 1813 Elizabeth Sackville had married the 5th Earl De La Warr, and when the male line of the Dukes of Dorset died out in 1865 she and her husband inherited Bexhill.

It was the 7th Earl De La Warr who decided to transform the small rural village of Bexhill into an exclusive seaside resort. He contracted the builder, John Webb, to construct the first sea wall and to lay out De La Warr Parade. Webb, in part payment for his work, was given all the land extending from Sea Road to the Polegrove, south of the railway line. Opened in 1890, the luxurious Sackville Hotel was built for the 7th Earl De La Warr and originally included a house for the use of his family. In 1891 Viscount Cantelupe, his eldest surviving son, married Muriel Brassey, the daughter of Sir Thomas and the late Annie, Lady Brassey of Normanhurst Court near Bexhill. The Manor House was fully refurbished so that Lord and Lady Cantelupe could live in style as Lord and Lady of the Manor. Finally, the 7th Earl De La Warr transferred control of his Bexhill estate to Viscount Cantelupe. When the 7th Earl De La Warr died in 1896

Viscount Cantelupe became the 8th Earl De La Warr. At this time he organised the building on the sea front of the Kursaal, a pavilion for refined entertainment and relaxation. He also had a bicycle track made, with a cycle chalet, at the eastern end of De La Warr Parade. These amenities were provided to promote the new resort. Meanwhile, many independent schools were being attracted to the expanding town due to its health-giving reputation. The railway came through Bexhill in 1846, the first railway station being a small country halt situated roughly where Sainsbury's car park is today. This was some distance from the village on the hill. A new station, north of Devonshire Square, was opened in 1891 to serve the growing resort. In 1902 the current railway station was opened and a Bexhill West Station was built for the newly built Crowhurst Branch Line.

1902 was the year that Bexhill became an Incorporated Borough. This was the first Royal Charter granted by Edward VII. Bexhill was the last town in Sussex to be incorporated and it was the first time a Royal Charter was delivered by motorcar. To celebrate the town's newfound status and to promote the resort, the 8th Earl De La Warr organised the country's first ever motorcar races along De La Warr Parade in May 1902. The town was scandalised at this time by the divorce of Earl De La Warr.

Muriel had brought the action on the grounds of adultery and abandonment. She was granted a divorce and given custody of their three children. Muriel, with her children, Myra, Avice and Herbrand, went back to live with Earl Brassey at Normanhurst Court. The 8th Earl De La Warr remarried but was again divorced for adultery. He also suffered recurrent and well-publicised financial difficulties. At the start of the First World War in 1914 the Earl bought a Royal Naval commission. He died of fever at Messina in 1915.

Herbrand Edward Dundonald Brassey Sackville became the 9th Earl De La Warr. He is best known for championing the construction of the De La Warr Pavilion, which was built and opened in 1935. The 9th Earl also became Bexhill's first socialist mayor. He died in 1976.

The Second World War caused the evacuation of the schools and substantial bomb-damage to the town. Many schools returned to Bexhill after the war but there was a steady decline in the number of independent schools in the town. The break-up of the British Empire and in particular the Independence of India in 1947 hastened the process. Most of the schools were boarding and catered largely for the children of the armed forces overseas and of the colonial administration. Although the number of schools decreased, many of the parents and former pupils had fond memories of the town and later retired to Bexhill.

The monastery of Clonmacnoise....is situated in County Offaly, Ireland on the River Shannon south of Athlone.

Clonmacnoise was founded in 544 by St. Ciarán, a young man from Rathcroghan, Co. Roscommon. (Not to be confused or conflated with St. Ciarán of Saigir, patron of Osraige.) Until the 9th century it had close associations with the kings of Connacht. The strategic location of the monastery helped it become a major centre of religion, learning, craftsmanship, and trade by the 9th century and together with Clonard it was the most famous in Ireland, visited by scholars from all over Europe. From the ninth until the eleventh century it was allied with the kings of Meath. Many of the high kings of Tara and Connacht were buried here.

In the modern day, the site stands as a preserved ruin under the management of the Office of Public Works. An interpretive centre and facilities for visitors have been built around the site, which is open to the public for a fee. The graveyard surrounding the site continues to be in use and religious services are held regularly on the site in a modern chapel - Wikipedia

Situated in the middle of 1000 acres of beautiful parklands, Highclere Castle is one of England's most beautiful Victorian castles. Downton Abbey was filmed at the grand Highclere Castle, the gardens and the surrounding 1,000 acres of English countryside lushly authenticate the Edwardian-era atmosphere of the well-known seres. To the southeast of the castle lies the Monks' Garden, a name derived from the Bishops of Winchester who had owned the estate for 800 years before it was acquired by the Carnarvon family in 1679. Records in 1218 list 61 fruit trees that were replanted in 1364 when 44 apple trees and 27 pear trees were planted.

Situated in the Peruvian Andes, Cuzco developed, under the Inca ruler Pachacutec, into a complex urban centre with distinct religious and administrative functions. It was surrounded by clearly delineated areas for agricultural, artisan and industrial production. When the Spaniards conquered it in the 16th century, they preserved the basic structure but built Baroque churches and palaces over the ruins of the Inca city.

Have a lovely monday, folks!

Basildon Park is a country house situated 2 miles south of Goring-on-Thames and Streatley in Berkshire. It is owned by the National Trust and is a Grade I listed building. The house was built between 1776 and 1783 for Sir Francis Sykes and designed by John Carr in the Palladian style at a time when Palladianism was giving way to the newly fashionable neoclassicism. Thus, the interiors are in a neoclassical "Adamesque" style.

Never fully completed, the house passed through a succession of owners. In 1910 it was standing empty and in 1914, it was requisitioned by the Government as an army convalescent hospital. It was again sold in 1928 and quickly sold again. In 1929, following a failed attempt to dismantle and rebuild the house in the USA, it was stripped of many of its fixtures and fittings and all but abandoned.

During World War II, the house was again requisitioned and served as a barracks, a training ground for tanks, and finally a prisoner of war camp—all activities unsuited to the preservation of an already semi-derelict building. In 1952, a time when hundreds of British country houses were being demolished, it was said of Basildon Park "to say it was derelict, is hardly good enough, no window was left intact and most were repaired with cardboard or plywood."

Today, Basildon Park is as notable for its mid-twentieth-century renaissance and restoration, by Lord and Lady Iliffe, as it is for its architecture. In 1978, the Iliffes gave the house, together with its park and a large endowment for its upkeep, to the National Trust in the hope that "The National Trust will protect it and its park for future generations to enjoy."

Gothenburg is the second-largest city in Sweden. It is situated by Kattegatt on the west coast of Sweden, and has a population of approximately 570,000.

Gothenburg was founded as a heavily fortified, primarily Dutch, trading colony in 1621. In addition to the generous privileges (e.g. tax relaxation) given to his Dutch allies from the then-ongoing Thirty Years`War, the king also attracted significant numbers of his German and Scottish allies to populate his only town on the western coast. At a key strategic location at the mouth of the river Göta älv, where Scandinavia's largest drainage basin enters the sea, the Port of Gothenburg is now the largest port in the Nordic countries

Situated in one of the Cotswolds prettiest villages, The Slaughters Manor House at Lower Slaughter in Gloucestershire is a 17th Century manor house and now a luxury hotel.

It is known that a manor house stood on the site before the Norman Conquest, even as early as 1004 A.D. In 1443, the Manor became a convent housing nuns from the order of Syon, the order being granted the land during this period. The two storey Dovecote that still stands in the grounds is believed to have supplied the nuns with nourishment. The Manor was returned to the crown in 1603 and in 1611 was granted to Sir George Whitmore, High Sheriff of Gloucestershire. It remained in his family until 1964 when it became a hotel.

Nestled within five acres of landscaped gardens, The Slaughters Manor House has a quintessentially English croquet lawn among its attractions.

This is my first photograph of 2023, taken on 2nd January during a circular walk taking in nearby Bourton-on-the-Water. Don’t be fooled by the winter sunshine; it was a mere 3 degrees Celsius.
