Situated close to Monaco, lies the very attractive and picturesque medieval village of Eze.

Eze is perched like an “eagle’s nest” on a superb cliff located 427m above sea level which enables the village and its light ochre church (Notre Dame de l’Assomption built in 1764) to be seen from afar.

It was during his stay on the Côte d’Azur that Frédéric Nietzsche discovered the village which later inspired him to compose the last part of his work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”.

Lytham Windmill is situated on Lytham Green in the coastal town of Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England. It is of the type known as a tower mill and was designed for grinding wheat and oats to make flour or bran. The mill was built on Lytham marshes around 1805 on land leased by the local landowner and squire to miller Richard Cookson. Wikipedia The building to the right of the windmill was formerly the lifeboat station and was opened in 1863.

Bikaner is situated in the middle of the Thar desert and has a hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWh) with very little rainfall and extreme temperatures. In summer temperatures can exceed 48 °C, and during the winter they may dip below freezing.

The climate in Bikaner is characterized by significant variations in temperature. In the summer season it is very hot when the temperatures lie in the range of 28–53.5 °C (82.4–128.3 °F). In the winter, it is fairly cold with temperatures lying in the range of −4–23.2 °C (24.8–73.8 °F).[15] Annual rainfall is in the range of 260–440 millimetres (10–17 in).[15][16] The highest ever temerature recorded is 49.5 °C (121.1 °F) on 19 May 2016 and lowest ever recorded is −4.0 °C (24.8 °F) on 26 January 1964.

Lagangarbh Hut is situated north of Buachaille Etive Mor near the River Coupall. It is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and has been occupied and maintained by the Club since 1946. It was extensively refurbished in 1994.

The hut is a former crofters cottage that is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland and is available to rent for visitors who really do want to get away from it all.

Typically with central entrance hall and stairs ahead, two rooms up and down, left and right. The roofing is still the local Ballachulish slate which covered much of Scottish housing. The walls are of thick stone, built to withstand the battering of gales.

Situated close to the Ancient city of Kourion, the Roman temple dedicated to Apollo Helates was destroyed by earthquake around 364/365 AD.

It was one of the main religious centres of ancient Cyprus, where Apollo was worshipped as god of the woodlands. It seems that the worship of Apollo on this site began as early as the 8th century B.C. and continued until the 4th century A.D. The site has undergone many extensions and alterations in different periods. The majority of the monuments as they can be seen today belong to the site's 1st century AD restorations.

It is the third highest mountain in Brazil, situated on the border of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states. It is the highest point in both states. It was historically considered the highest mountain in Brazil until 1965, when Pico da Neblina and Pico 31 de Março, next to the Venezuelan border, were explored, measured, and both found to be higher. The peak is said to have been so named after Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, ordered a flag to be flown on top of it.

It is one of the major attractions of Caparaó National Park, accessible from the nearby town of Alto Caparaó. That town and the entrance to the park lie in Minas Gerais, but the summit of Pico da Bandeira lies in Espírito Santo.

The summit is accessible to hikers of most age groups, with only very limited fitness requirements. The track from the park entrance to the summit track [8 km (5.0 mi)] can be driven by most vehicles, and the summit track itself runs for approximately 9 km (5.6 mi), with a further 1,000 m (3,280 ft) climb.

The sequence of the highest mountains in Brazil:

#1: Pico da Neblina (2,993.80 m / 9,822 ft), Venezuela/Brazil;

#2: March 31 Peak (2,972.70 m / 9,816 ft), Venezuela/Brazil;

#3: Pico da Bandeira (2,892 m / 9,488 ft), Brazil;

#4: Pico do Calçado* (2,849 m / 9,347 ft), Brazil;

#6: Pico do Cristal (2,769.80 m / 9,084 ft), Brazil;

The difference from the third highest to the first is only 101.80 meters / 334 ft in altitude.

I climbed the third, fourth and sixth in Brazil this weekend. Only the sixth mountain is challenging.

* For reasons of topographical prominence, the IBGE considers Pico do Calçado a secondary peak of Pico da Bandeira and not a separate mountain.

Schloss Neuenburg (Freyburg)

Castle Neuenburg (Freyburg)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuenburg_Castle_(Freyburg)

Neuenburg Castle is a hilltop castle overlooking Freyburg, a town in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The castle was built around 1090 by the Thuringian count Ludwig der Springer, securing his territory in the east, as did its sister castle Wartburg in the west.[1] The name Neuenburg derives from German for "new castle".

From 1656 until 1746 it was a secondary residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Weissenfels.

The Gruuthuse house and museum is situated behind the Our Lady's church. This impressive city mansion belonged to one of the richest families of the medieval city. It has now been transformed into a splendid museum.

The Gruuthusemuseum, which is housed in the 15th-century city palace of the lords of Gruuthuse possesses the most diverse collection of applied art or decorative art of Bruges from the 13th to the 19th century. In addition one finds a large collection of pictures, interesting Bruges tapestries and furniture, silverware, pewter, weapons, ceramics and musical instruments. The centerpiece is the infamous 18th century guillotine, done in the armory. The palace radiates a special atmosphere. Especially in the kitchen and in the original medieval oratory, built in 1472, one imagines still in the late Middle Ages. The most famous resident of this monumental building was Louis of Gruuthuse.

The name already explains why the Gruuthuse family was so important. The old Flemish word 'gruut' means : peeled barley or wheat. This was the main ingredient for beer-brewing in the Middle Ages. The lords of Bruges had the monopoly for the sale of this very important product. Because of their monopoly position they became very wealthy and powerful and they soon became known as the 'lords of Gruuthuse' (huse= house).

The most famous member of this family is Lodewijk van Gruuthuse (= Louis of Gruuthuse), diplomat and art lover. His equestrian statue can be seen above the lower front facade of the Gruuthuse palace. Under the statue is his personal motto 'Plus est en Vous' (= there is more in you. The motto is in French, the language of European medieval nobility). This part was built during the lifetime of Lodewijk, namely in 1465. In 1628 the former palace of Gruuthuse became a pawn shop. After a complete renovation (partially in neo-gothic style) in 1883 to 1898 the entire house became the archeological city museum 'Gruuthusemuseum' with a very large collection of works of art from different domains (lace, tapestries, paintings, furniture, etc...)

The prayer chapel gave the Lords of Gruuthuse direct access to the Church of Our Lady and now offers an excellent view of the tomb of Mary of Burgundy.

Helmsley is situated on the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park approximately 200 feet (61 m) above sea level. The town's geology is sandstone. To the west and the north of the settlement the moorland areas are predominantly limestone. Helmsley lies in a hollow in undulating open countryside, flanked by heather moor to the north and the rolling farmland of the Howardian Hills to the south. The flat lowland of the Vale of Pickering stretches eastwards from the town towards Malton. The River Rye runs by the town to the south where it is joined at Rye Bridge by the Borough Beck flowing southwards through the town from the moors. Meadows south of the Rye form an important buffer and create an attractive setting for the town from the southern approach. The area was affected by flash flooding on the night of 19 June 2005

Situated on the grounds of Culloden Battlefield lies Leanach cottage. This beautiful thatched cottage attracts many visitors throughout the year and is a lovely memory of the history of the battlefield. Today, we thought we’d share a little more about the cottage and why it is so special to all of us here at Culloden.

Leanach is one of the last survivors of a once common local structure type of a single storey thatched building. Today the building stands as an isolated structure but in the past this area was well populated and the land divided into smallholdings. Historical maps show a number of farmsteads in the close vicinity with small pockets of individually cultivated land, however, Leanach is now one of the only surviving examples of this landscape.

The cottage itself was likely constructed in the early 18th century, probably as part of wider improvements on Culloden estate and originally would have been a T-shaped structure. In the 17th and 18th century estate owners provided their tenants with the wood for their roof crucks whilst the tenant was responsible for the construction of the walls of their houses.The walls were often made from local stone and/or turf at the gable ends.

During the Battle of Culloden Leanach Cottage was situated in between the Government lines and it is likely the building would have been used as a field hospital for the government men.

Following Culloden there were several periods of occupation, sometimes intermittent and the shape of the building appears to have been altered by the demolition of the western end of the structure in the mid-late 1860s, leaving an L-plan structure which can still be seen today. The building then appears to have been abandoned again shortly after this and fell into a ruinous state (late 1860s-1880s). The cottage was then rebuilt and reoccupied in the early 1880s, possibly as part of Duncan Forbes’ work to memorialise the Battle of Culloden during which time he also built the memorial cairn and erected grave stones on the clan graves.

The last occupant of Leanach Cottage was Belle MacDonald who lived here until she died in 1912. Her family apparently gave tours of the battlefield to interested visitors as the Victorian railway brought tourists into the highlands. In 1924 the Gaelic Society of Inverness and Thomas Munro Architects set out to repair and conserve the building and the original steeply pitched roof was replaced with a shallower one.

The National Trust for Scotland was gifted Leanach Cottage in 1944 by Hector Forbes, the local land owner, and it became the original visitor centre in 1961. Quite different from the centre we have today it had a few simple panels to allow people to experience the story of the battle. Minor alterations continued until 1978 when the NTS removed the old 1920’s roof and replaced it back to a steeply pitched roof more in line with the original crucks which were still visible in the western wall.

With the opening of the new visitor centres Leanach has been able to retain its charm and beauty and we hope to be able to open the cottage once again next year so visitors can see inside this lovely piece of history.

The Snæfellsnes is a peninsula situated to the west of Borgarfjörður, in western Iceland.

The Snæfellsjökull volcano, regarded as one of the symbols of Iceland, can be found in the area. With its height of 1446 m, it is the highest mountain on the peninsula and has a glacier at its peak (jökull means "glacier" in Icelandic). The volcano can be seen on clear days from Reykjavík, a distance of about 120 km. The mountain is also known as the setting of the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by the French author Jules Verne. The area surrounding Snæfellsjökull has been designated one of the four National Parks by the government of Iceland. It is also the home of the Ingjaldsholl church, a Protestant church.

The peninsula is one of the main settings in the Laxdœla saga and it was, according to this saga, the birthplace of the first West Norse member of the Varangian Guard, Bolli Bollasson. Other historical people who lived in the area according to the saga include Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir, Bolli Þorleiksson and Snorri Goði.

The monastery of Karakallou is situated between the monasteries of Great Lavra and Iviron, on a slope by the sea and is dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. Inside the fortified enclosure, there is the Katholikon of athonite type, built in mid 16th c. and decorated with frescoes in the early 18th c. The monastery has 7 chapels, 4 Kellia in Karyes, and 14 Kellia in the forest to the S.W. of it.

The monastery is mentioned in documents of 1018 and 1087. In the 13th c. the monastery is entirely ruined and rebuilt by the emperors Andronic II and Ioannis V Paleologos. Afterwards the monastery is attacked by Latins and pirates. In the 16th c. it is completely destroyed and rebuilt with the financial aid of rulers of Moldavia and Vlachia.

In the monastery, there are many portable icons, holy heirlooms and ecclesiastical vessels. The library contains 279 manuscripts and about 2,500 books.

Situated in the centre of Reykjavík, it is one of the city's best-known landmarks and is visible throughout the city. State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson's design of the church was commissioned in 1937. He is said to have designed it to resemble the trap rocks, mountains and glaciers of Iceland's landscape.

At 74.5 metres (244 ft) high, it is the largest church in Iceland and among the tallest structures in the country.

East Ruston Old Vicarage

Situated in Vicarage Road, East Ruston, Norfolk NR12 9HN this garden was full of surprises. This is the first time we have visited here but it will not be the last. It has over 30 acres of garden, of long borders and vistas, individual rooms of flowers and rare plants. The house which is closed to the public but is surrounded by many exotic plants. There is also a walled garden, a wildflower meadow, garden sculpture, a sunken garden and many other features.

The garden was established in 1973 by Alan Gray and Graham Robeson on a harsh site with the North Sea close by but by careful planting of trees, particularly Monteray Pines, they have created a micro-climate where their many plants and shrubs flourish.

Close by is Happisburgh Common where it’s possible to walk from the house to the lighthouse and beach. The distance is just over two miles. We didn’t do it this time but will on our next trip. Definitely a great garden to visit.

Oxburgh Hall is situated in Oxborough village, to the south west of Swaffham in an area known as the 'Brecks'. The hall itself is a beautiful moated manor house, managed by the National Trust. The house was built in the late 15th century by Sir Edmund Bedingfield and his descendants have lived here pretty much ever since. The staunch Catholic family have seen the house come under constant threat and over the years it has been subjected to fire, war, dereliction and even a threat of demolition. Thankfully it survived and has been restored, much of which took place in the mid 19th century. The interior of the house contains both Tudor and Victorian rooms which contain many treasures and surprises - such as needlework by Mary Queen of Scots. Henry VII stayed in the King's Room when he visited Oxburgh in 1487 and little has changed in this room since.

Cuenca is situated between Madrid and Valencia, in the third least populated region in Europe, and the town itself is a World Heritage site - the old town is an outstanding example of a medieval city, built on the steep sides of a mountain. The many casas colgadas ("hanging houses") are built right up to the cliff edge, making Cuenca one of the most striking towns in Spain, a gem in the province of Castilla La Mancha.

This remote house, situated on the east edge of Hardcastle Moor at Bental Head above Vipoints Hill and has a wonderful view down into Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. Originally located in the now long gone village of Hardcastle

The track behind me continues to Lords Hall which was a “Laithe” house, that is a building where the accommodation for both humans and animals is under the same roof, but separated by a solid wall.

At the time of the 1911 census there are only 3 houses in Hardcastle shown as occupied, one is Providence House and the other two are not named

This house is not named on the map and I did not see any signs but I think it is Vipoints The permitted route was left from where I'm stood so I did not pass the house

You can read of the history of Lords Hall and Hardcastle village here and on the small map shown this house is adjacent to the last "s" in the word Springs

Situated on a small rocky island in Anglesey overlooking the Irish Sea, South Stack was one of the iconic locations I just had to visit on my trip to North Wales. I arrived here on my first night hoping for a sunset but with a cloudless sky and with insane winds that I couldn't stand up straight meant it almost impossible to get a shot i was happy with. Only there for three nights we decided to give it an other go on our last night. This time we got better conditions pretty much no wind which meant I could sit on the cliff top and enjoy this incredible view.

Situated five minutes away from Princes Street, visitors can find the Dean Village, a beautiful oasis right by the Water of Leith.

Dean Village was previously where milling of water mills took place, of which remains of this can still be seen by visitors. Hidden in the village, you will come across a variety of mill stones and stone plaques decorated with baked bread and pies. The Dean Bridge can also be found if you walk along the walkway following the Water of Leith. The Bridge and St Bernard's Well were both designed by Thomas Telford.

At the heart of the village is Well Court, the most iconic building in the village. This building was built in the 1880s and housed local workers who worked at the water mills.

Just a short walk away, visitors can also browse exhibitions in the Dean Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Both buildings were previously converted and refurbished to be used as art galleries and many of their exhibitions are free
