The Portuguese town of Sintra, north of Lisbon, is a completely whimsical place, hosting a number of castles and palaces in a variety of styles.
This is one aspect of the National Palace, regarded as the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal. What we see here is part of the Manueline wing of the palace, built by King Manuel I between 1497 and 1530.
He ruled over a period of intensive expansion of the Portuguese Empire, and his sponsorship of Vasco da Gama (see his monument here) led to the discovery of the sea route to India in 1498, which guaranteed Portugal's monopoly on the spice trade.
