The Pena Palace (Portuguese: Palácio da Pena) is a Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.

Sintra is a delightful Portuguese town that is situated within the hills of the Serra de Sintra. Hidden within these pine covered hills are extravagant palaces, opulent mansions and the ruins of an ancient castle.
The variety of fascinating historic buildings and enthralling attractions, combine to form a fantastic destination. A visit to this wonderful place is a must

Although there are many places to visit in Sintra, I preferred rambling through Sintra's streets, both narrow and wide. I find the Sintra architecture very beautiful and quite peculiar, conveying a mysterious sense of dignity in spite of their old age.

Sintra, Portugal (UNESCO World Heritage Site) showcases a special style of Architecture called Manueline which is a cross between Gothic & Romantic - it flourished particularly in the 19th century.

View of Sintra .. here you can see the Paço do Concelho (the tower is all covered in azulejos), built in early 1900. Sintra is a Unesco Heritage and an unique place; about 30 minutes frm Lisbon, its fascinating not only for its beauty and unique climate, but for its Palaces and History.
A favourite holiday place of the Royal family and beloved by the British its a charming place.
