Since there is no boardwalk, I was worried there would be nothing to do. I could not have been more wrong. There were so many shops, eateries, parks, flowers, and things to see. I became fascinated with the architecture and photographed every house in a 5 mile radius. On the beach, there was a roaming gang of giant seagulls that loot from people's bags. Also visited other parts of the Cape, which will be in separate albums as this one will already be insanely large.
Another productive but only mildly adventurous day today. Since we've had days of rain and more says of rain on the way, nothing had been completely drying after being hung, so I decided to wash two loads of laundry and take one trip to the laundromat for drying. While everything was washing- I cleaned the bathroom like it had never been cleaned before. We filled up 15litres of gas (4gal) for $22.50. One laundromat was already overflowing with people who had the same idea and also lacking a dryer. The second one I went to had an opening in a couple driers but the machines only took $1 coins or 20¢ coins- so when I came up $1 short- I had do hunt down a convenience store. I ended up paying $10.10 #sparechange for a bottle of Vitamin Water, bag of chips, and pack of gum- in the state that's would be about $4 or less. Once everything was dry- Alex was a sweetie and helped me fold everything, put it away, then we made dinner together and did the dishes together. It was a very domestic Sunday in our new home in #Brisbane. Tomorrow it's back to the work week!
...... this is the sight that confronted me this morning.
Remember the sugar protea that I made back in January for my friend's birthday cake ? The one that she so carefully kept so that I could add more flowers to it for her ruby wedding anniversary cake?
Well, I took the flowers off that cake at the anniversary party and she asked me if I would take them home and keep them for her until she no longer had a house full of overseas visitors.
The flowers appeared fine (I last looked at them on Saturday) but we have been experiencing unusual very high levels of humidity and Sunday brought forth torrential rain which made it ten times worse ..... if that were possible !
I checked the flowers again today and I was met with these bare wires and a puddle of sugar ..... even the Blushing Brides are wilting.
My friend had treasured this protea and kept it so well since January ....... I will, of course, remake it for her but I have yet to pluck up courage to tell her what has happened.
I know in the bigger picture of things this is only sugar ........ but I could still weep ........
Seems like everytime I shoot tis neat little railroad, they uuse the same engine, 1520. Here it is bringing a few flatcars to Komatsu. A meet wiith the Iowa wasn't scheduled, but since 1520 was nearby they decided to just use her.
Since it's L. Frank Baum's Birthday today I remembered my daughter was in the Wizard of Oz play forever ago - so here a few fun pictures - follow me down memory lane and help celebrate a wonderful story and story teller - Happy Birthday L. Frank Baum!!!!

Two new members in the dynamic Montblanc StarWalker Collection
Since its launch in 2003, the Montblanc StarWalker has become one of Montblanc’s most distinctive writing instrument collections, renowned for combining cutting-edge design with the creative use of unusual or new materials. Ten years later, in November 2013 Montblanc introduces two new contemporary pieces to this dynamic collection.
A characteristic unique to every Montblanc StarWalker writing instrument is the contemporary interpretation of the iconic Montblanc emblem. The white Montblanc emblem floats weightlessly inside a transparent cap top; a reminder that Montblanc offers cutting-edge design while always upholding the finest traditional craftsmanship.
Montblanc StarWalker Ultimate Carbon
The StarWalker Ultimate Carbon features a grey carbon fibre cap and barrel decorated with a subtle geometric pattern, in a statement of ingenious and ergonomic design. The use of carbon in a material finely woven of thousands of fibres, delivers a light yet robust writing instrument. The pen’s fittings are ruthenium-plated, a very rare transition metal of the platinum group. The Au585 gold nib, the very soul of the writing instrument, is also plated with ruthenium and engraved with the Montblanc emblem.
The Montblanc StarWalker Carbon
The StarWalker Carbon gets a different twist through a few design variations. The polished platinum-plated cap and fittings deliver additional refinement to this version, and clearly set the cap and barrel apart from each other with a contrast in colour and materials. A light finish on the surface of each piece protects it from the damage of every day use.
I've wanted a PCB prototyping machine since I was a little kid and finally I've added one to my lab setup.
It's been more than two years now since the devastating Wenchuan Earthquake(12.V.2008) which caused dead of more than 70.000 people...
The story of Beichuan Middle School remains one of the saddest episodes of that tragedy.
More than 1.300 students and teachers lost their lifes. The ones who survived were relocated to the courtyard of the Changhong training center(Chinese biggest television set maker) in Sichuan's Mianyang City, acting as their temporary school.
I went there last month and met some of the kids.
The construction of the new Beichuan School is nearly complete so the students are going to move there soon...

Since that DISH Network L.L.C is could be the company that could have the annoying commercial with a satellite dish strolling around the house in the dark with extremely annoying music just like the Vengaboys song We Like to Party driving everybody nuts and reminding them of T.R. Chula's white saliva on the first half of 2006 and I never ever wanted that commercial and that annoying music to come back and I never ever want anything to go on T.R. Chula's white saliva so I hear by DISH Network L.L.C MUST BE BANNED AND GET SHUT DOWN FOR GOOD and MUST HAVE Rauland Telecenter and Canadian TV providers take over DirecTV and DISH Network just like having electric mechanical wall bells taking over Bogen Multicom 2000 and we MUST CONVERT ALL DISH Network offices into Nelvana studios or DeVry College of Technology campuses. So T.R. Chula the evil Tarantula from Fievel Goes West MUST BE BURNED TO ASHES in a FIRE and extinguish his white saliva for good. The Vengaboys song, We like to Party MUST BE BANNED and never ever get revived in the future because this song annoys people very bad and reminds them of T.R. Chula's white saliva and I never ever want anything on T.R. Chula's white saliva and especially in 2004, they introduced the worst and most creepy mascot to Six Flags who was called Mr. Six who will also be banned too because he danced to this annoying song we all hate and this is one of the reasons why Six Flags MUST SHUT DOWN forever and get replaced by Corbeil School Bus Manufacturing Plants and we want the world to be a friendlier place too not with this annoying song by the Vengaboys. This song doesn't only annoy me this song also annoys Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Buffett. Mr. Six the mascot of Six Flags of 2004 MUST BE BANNED and NEVER EVER get revived in the future because Mr. Six is so bald, annoying, and freaky and freaks people out and have killed the happiness of the late 1990s which is getting restored forever. And Mr. Six have danced to the worst annoying song we all hate which is called "We Like to Party" and also have restored the worst Tom and Jerry cartoon "Tom and Jerry: The Movie" with some bratts were getting bad advice from this movie with convience taking over good old fashioned traditional stuff is the exaggerated house demolition in 1992's Tom and Jerry the movie with a pear-shaped wrecking ball destroying the beautiful old fashioned living house and replacing it with a garage full of ice cream trucks with the bad old outdated confusing misleading red trapezoid children slow crossing warning blades that word IF-SAFE STOP THEN-GO which is extremely mean-spirited and is a yield sign that says stop which is extremely wrong and confusing to people who are deaf, color blind, can't read, or don't speak English. Also old fashined traditional stuff are extremely important not just conviences. Good thing I am making safety collaborations by updating all ice cream trucks to all have the current updated yellow trapezoid children slow crossing warning blades that word children slow crossing and or school bus swing arm stop signs which are octagon shaped especially I know for a fact in all traffic signs the shape is the most important not just the word and color especially in all stop signs the octagon shape is the most important not just the word and color in the 2000s when McDonald's had super-size which made our economy gone bad. So when Mr. Six gets Banned we will all tear apart the Six Flags buses used in the Six Flags commercial when Mr. Six was the masscot as new playplace play equipments for McDonald's restaurants and we will also smash the music box inside of these Six Flags buses into pieces so we will never ever hear that annoying song "We like to Party" ever again. So T.R. Chula the evil tarantula from Fievel Goes West MUST BE BURNED INTO ASHES IN A FIRE and extinguish his white saliva for good. Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992) MUST BE BANNED never ever get revived in the future because Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992) does have an upsetting unrealistic house demolition with an old fashioned pear-shaped wrecking ball destroying a beautiful old fashioned living house because of it being decades old ruining nostalgia and ruining my golden toddlerhood and abused many Blue's Clues Steve fans making them think the wrecking ball destroyed the handy dandy notebooks which we all love because the destroyed house at the beginning of Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992) does look slightly identical to the Blue's Clues House and now even the destroyed Handy Dandy Notebooks are getting mended back together. So I hereby Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992) to BE BANNED FOREVER due to abusing Blue's Clues Steve Fans like me. Tom and Jerry: The Movie MUST BE BANNED because it has an unrealistic house demolition with a very bad old fashioned wrecking ball that upsets people so bad and abused many Blue's Clues Steve Fans and some bratts were getting bad advice from this movie with convience taking over good old fashioned traditional stuff is the exaggerated house demolition in 1992's Tom and Jerry the movie with a pear-shaped wrecking ball destroying the beautiful old fashioned living house and replacing it with a garage full of ice cream trucks with the bad old outdated confusing misleading red trapezoid children slow crossing warning blades that word IF-SAFE STOP THEN-GO which is extremely mean-spirited and is a yield sign that says stop which is extremely wrong and confusing to people who are deaf, color blind, can't read, or don't speak English and polluting the environment and putting Eastern cottontail rabbits extinct. . Similar to modern Simpsons (seasons 19 and Later) 1992's Tom and Jerry the movie is another bad media showing convience taking over good important traditional stuff with a pear-shaped wrecking ball destroying a beautiful old fashioned living house and replace the house with convient high rise appartment building with a garage full of ice cream trucks with the bad old oudated confusing misleading red trapezoid children slow crossing warning blades that word IF-SAFE STOP THEN-GO which was mean-spirited and ruining my golden toddlerhood. In the 2000s, Warner Bros reviving 1992's Tom and Jerry the movie and and selling too many DVD copies of that movie surpassing Corduroy the Bear and his buttons was all McDonald's corporation and Bogen Communication's fault because the super size at McDonald's was brainwashing many people by reviving the bad old 1992 Tom and Jerry movie and popularizing Bogen Multicom 2000 and their mean spirited bell tones that are haunted chimes that don't sound like a bell at all scaring off kids especially kids with autism and making them not want to go to school and abandoning my golden toddler stuff like Corduroy the Bear with two buttons on his green corduroy overalls but good thing I am undoing all of the bad influence the super size gave us by restoring my golden toddlerhood, safety improvements, kindness improvements, reviving Nelvana's version of Corduroy the Bear with the premiere of Two Buttons again and Forever fixing Betty Quan's upsetting mistake for good by showing that they did get Corduroy's button out of the storm drain and put Corduroy's button back on Corduroy the Bear's green corduroy overalls and that corduroy the bear does have two buttons on his green corduroy overalls forever and bringing back all nostalgic inducing stuff like green chalkboards and electric mechanical wall bells etc and create a nostalgic inducing future. So this is why all broadcasts of The Simpsons MUST BE BY LAW MANDATED to be ONLY reruns of classic Simpsons (first 18 seasons of The Simpsons). This is why all schools MUST BE BY LAW MANDATED to be set up like Middleborough, Hilltop School from Timothy Goes to School, and or my DeVry building in North Brunswick, NJ and all with green chalkboards, electric mechanical wall bells, and Corbeil school buses and other school buses with electric stop arms, and only kind-spirited stuff like Disney Snow White and Pinocchio stuff and Corduroy the Bear with two buttons on his green corduroy overalls and Steve Notebooks etc, and no mean-spirited stuff like Bogen Multicom 2000 and that mean scary looking grumpy face with the freaky spikey eyelashes and triangular eyes and razor blade forehead wrinkles they used to have on Gordon in the old live action model version of Thomas and Friends and no processed foods in the school lunches. This is why McDonald's restaurants MUST BE BY LAW MANDATED to be McEyebrows with the yellow and orange striped awnings, arch wedge the new aluminum exterior I have created, or the original 1970s version of the iconic double sloped mansard roof and better and safe updated indoor PlayPlaces with low and safe steps and slides and green chalkboards and or just the dining room option (no playplace), This is why all ice cream trucks MUST BE BY LAW MANDATED to be all updated to the current updated yellow trapezoid children slow crossing warning blades that word CHILDREN SLOW CROSSING and or school bus stop signs and that all ice cream trucks MUST BE BY LAW MANDEDTED TO GET RID of the bad old outdated red trapezoid children slow crossing warning blades that word IF-SAFE STOP THEN-GO for good, This is why Crayola Crayon boxes MUST BE BY LAW MANDATED to be new modern 1997 boxes. This is why school PA systems MUST BE BY LAW MANDATED to be Rauland Telecenter or PA systems with no bell tones. And this is why Nelvana and Hanna-Barbera MUST TAKE OVER Warner Bros. Animation. The reality is that demolition are based on how bad the building is damaged not on how old the building is like in 1992's Tom and Jerry the movie. And River TV and other Canadian TV providers of Ontario will expand in the USA to Take over DirecTV and Dish Network.
If you like my work and wanna show it by inviting me to one of your groups, you are very welcome to do that, but please do not leave any graphic logos! I'll delete them.
Since I had this photo printed in a 8x12 format, it was a challenge to frame (it's not a common frame size). However, when I saw this 13x15 floating frame, I knew it would be a great fit.

Since the early 1920’s, famous movie stars like Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry and the Lone Ranger have been shooting it out at Alabama Hills. In 1969, the BLM dedicated nearly 30,000 acres of public land west of Lone Pine, California, as the Alabama Hills Recreation Area. The rounded, oddly shaped contours of the Alabama Hills form a sharp contrast to the glacially chiseled ridges of the nearby Sierra Nevada. Both landforms consist of a similar granitic rock that was uplifted around 100 million years ago.
The Alabama Hills lie west of Death Valley National Park, so it’s an easy trip for park visitors. And the Alabama Hills also lie at the base of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48, which adds to the spectacular landscape. The BLM and the Alabama Hills Stewardship Group care for this area with the goal of preserving the hills in as close as natural state as possible for the enjoyment of future generations. A one-of-a-kind road trip!

Since 1554, when the Reformation spread from Bern to Grandson, this church is the Evangelical Reformed parish church of the small, quaint town at the banks of the Lake Neuchâtel.
Most of the structure seen today was erected after 1178, when the lords of Grandson had founded a Benedictian priory, dependent on La Chaise-Dieu in the Auvergne, about 400kms southwest.
Inside the nave facing east to the gothic choir. It seems, that the iconoclasms of the Swiss Reformation did not harm the church, all capitels are "in situ" and intact. Most of the column shafts are - Roman! They were probably hauled to Grandson for recycling from the vast ruins of Aventicum the Roman capital of the Swiss area during Vespasian´s time. Today "Avenches" is a small town about 40kms east on the other side of the lake.
The church is extremly well preserved and very tastefully furnished.
One of the capitals depicts four large birds. I do not think, that these birds are eagles. In medieval times pelicans were thought to be particularly attentive to their young. When no other food was available, they wounded their breast and provided their own blood to the nestlings. As a result, the pelican became a symbol of the Passion of Jesus.
So I have the impression, that here are four pelicans.
Since 1999, the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) has cleared nearly 186 square kilometres of land, destroying over 665,000 mines and other explosive weapons. More than 160,000 people displaced by conflict have been resettled as a result.

Grinzing
Grinzinger village church, sky road (Himmelstraße)
To 1891 independent vintner community, since then part of the 19th district of Vienna, since 1114 a large village. Named after the personal name Grinco, by the Turks and the Frenche several times destroyed, in the 19th century vintner location, excursion site and a summer resort, today well-known Heurigenort (numerous wine taverns). Townscape with village character (under monument protection) in a valley between vine-clad foothills of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods).
Due to Emperor Probus, already in 276 AD the first vines were planted on the hills around Grinzing. This botanical avocation of Roman legionaries brought the little village at the gates of Vienna prosperity and much, much later even international fame - because in this graceful landscape grows an excellent wine! To get away occasionally with all military conflicts of the last 700 years, the Grinziger winemakers laid underground escape routes to their wine cellars, them bringing even to their beloved Grinzinger church.
Alley behind the "Old Preßhaus (winepress house)"
The former "Old Preßhaus", Grinzing's oldest wine tavern, too, had a passage under the earth. Since 1527 in the mighty, impressive cellar the "young wine" was ausgeschenkt (poured out or served). In front of a magnificent 250 year old wine press and large, old barrels one here could experience Heurigengemütlichkeit (wine tavern comfortableness). This typical Viennese form of companionableness, since the times of Maria Theresa officially as "Winery" designated, is for the Viennese a small, timeless piece of luck.
Grinzing
Cobenzlgasse
Grinzing was a separate municipality until 1892 and is now a part of Vienna in the 19th District of Vienna Döbling and one of the 89 Vienna Katastralgemeinden (cadastral communities).
Grinzing is in the northwest of Vienna and it is with an area of 613.52 ha the largest part of the district Döbling. In the northeast it borders on the Josefsdorf, then the border runs along the Wildgrube and the Schreiberbach (brook) to the east and then branches off along the Springsiedelgasse and the Neugebauerweg to the south.
Grinzing in winter
Along the hunger mountain road (Hungerbergstraße) the border to Unterdöbling follows the course of the Kaasgraben, Grinzing from Sievering separating. Over the Road to Heaven (Himmelstraße) and the Spießweg the border finally runs in a north-westerly direction to the city limits, Grinzing from Weidling (Lower Austria) separating.
Cobenzlgasse
Grinzing is in large areas marked of wooded ridges of the Vienna Woods. At the border to Lower Austria is also the highest mountain of Vienna, the Hermannskogel. In addition, here are some very well-known mountains like Reisenberg, Latisberg, Vogelsangberg, Hunger Mountain (Hungerberg) and Pfaffenberg. In the parts of the Grinziger Vienna Woods are also several streams, such as the Schreiberbach in Wildgrube which runs unspoilt until shortly before Nußdorf. Additionally, originates to the west of the Reisenberg the Reisenbergbach (which from the border of the village is administered as stream channel) and in the western part of Grinzing lies the headwaters of the Arbesbach. Another characteristic of Grinzing are also the remaining vines, which are found especially on Reisenberg and Hungerberg.

Besides the numerous wine taverns in particular the Grinziger church and the Kaasgrabenkirche (church) are worth seeing. In the expansive part of the Vienna Woods is also based the Habsburgwarte on the Hermannskogel, the Karl Lueger Memorial, the restaurant "Cobenzel" on Reisenberg, as well as the romantic forest-Biedermeier cemetery on the slopes of Mount Kahlenberg, amongst other things, with the graves of the "most beautiful woman of the Congress of Vienna" as well as various high aristocrats of the era of Metternich. A special treasure represents the organ in the parish church of Grinzing.
On the Grinzinger cemetery are the graves of Gustav Mahler, Alma Mahler-Werfel, Attila Hörbiger, Paula Wessely, Peter Alexander, Heimito von Doderer, Ida Krottendorf and Thomas Bernhard.

The wine taverns
Winery "Bach Hengl", Sandgasse
The history of the Viennese wine tavern actually goes back to the Roman Emperor Probus, who allowed his legionaries wine cultivation in the provinces in the year 276. In the Middle Ages also there are numerous sources that relate to the wine, such as a clerk, who advised his contemporaries" never to drink at a stretch more than six measures (liters) as the temperance is a really godly virtue".
Certainly, at that time, one was not yet driving with the car... No medieval ruler adopted that many laws regarding the wine, the cultivation of wine and the wine law as Charlemagne.
Winery "Bach Hengl", Sandgasse
Another Emperor, Joseph II of Habsburg, in 1784 finally created the first generally accepted statutory basis for the wine tavern, according to which each wine grower (Weingärtner) was allowed pour out self-produced juice of the grape.
The word Heuriger has a double meaning and means both the wine of the last harvest, in November of the following year becoming the 'old' one, and the place where you drink it.
Winery "Berger", Road to Heaven
Currently in Vienna of about 300 winemakers on 700 hectares viticulture is operated. 90 percent of Viennese wine harvest of about 30,000 hectoliters are white wine, the rest red wine: a total of 12 million quarters.
Since my wife was at work, I took a walk with a camera at Northeast Park/Pennington Athletic Complex this morning. It was a cool and dreary day. .

Greymouth, our lunch brake. Day one of our four day trip away over Arthur's Pass and back through the Lewis Pass. February 8, 2012. South Island, New Zealand.
Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region in the South Island of New Zealand.
The town is located at the mouth of the Grey River, on a narrow coastal plain close to the foot of the Southern Alps. In clear weather, Aoraki/Mount Cook can be clearly seen to the south from near the town.
Māori had lived in Greymouth for considerable time before European settlement, and called the area Mawhera (for 'wide spread river mouth', still an alternative name for the Grey River). The first European to visit the site of what is now Greymouth was Thomas Brunner in 1846. Brunner discovered coal in the Grey valley, and several places in the region (notably the town of Brunner and Lake Brunner) bear his name. Brunner himself named the Grey River after prominent 19th century New Zealand politician Sir George Grey. Together with gold, coal mining was a major impetus in the town's early European history.
On 19 November 2010, there was an explosion at the Pike River Mine, trapping 29 miners. Attempts to rescue the trapped miners were repeatedly delayed due to high levels of methane gas until a second explosion on the 24th November was believed to dash all hope of survival for the miners.

Since a fair number of my contacts have and like cats, I thought it was time to take a few pics of mine. Jake was a friend's cat who I agreed to look after for 6 months last year, but who ended up staying with me permanently.
Since Mockingjay is going to be released tomorrow I wanted to do something with the Hunger Games trilogy......
Since this family photo was taken my D70 has since moved away and sadly, my 12-24 Tokina has been taken to another home. So the family is much smaller now. Just the Nikon D300s, Tokina 11-16 f2.8, Nikkor 55 f2.8 AIS macro, Nikkor 85 f2 AIS, Nikkor 70-210 f4, and Nikon SB600 flash remain. It's just a few of us now but we're very close.
Ever since 1851, the New York Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion,69th Infantry Regiment has been the parade's first march unit, and this year, they marked its 171st time leading the Annual New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, on a rainy March 17, 2022, in New York City. The entire battalion of over 600 soldiers marched in this year’s parade, led by their Commander Lt. Col. Shawn Tabankin, after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus of the full Battalions participation in the parade.
The regiment's officers start the day with a toast of Irish whiskey, followed by an early morning march to St Patrick’s Cathedral to attend a to honor the regiments fallen and honor its Irish heritage prior to the parade. The Regiment then then marches back to form up at the starting point, to then lead of the parade. After the parade, The City of New York provides a dedicated subway train to transport the Soldiers back down to the East Village for their unit day activities at their Armory at 26th and Lexington, where they are then cheered by the battalion's officers who render honors and pay tribute to the enlisted Soldiers and Non-Commissioned Officers as they enter the armory. Rookwood has been operating since 1867, & is one of the largest cemeteries in Australia. It is managed by five separate demoninational Trusts & an independant Crematorium. The Anglican Trust, General Trust, Catholic Trust Board, Independent Trust, Jewish Trust & the Muslem Trust. Each Trust looks after a portion of the cemetery under its control. The Cemetery has 8 Chapels for indoor funeral services, 5 denominational Open Air Chapels for special ceremonies & three Florist Shops.
The earliest references to the district around what is now Rookwood Necropolis, occur in 1793 when the first land grants to free settlers in the New South Wales colony were made nearby. As a result of its association with the first free settlers, the district was given the name of Liberty Plains. In 1855 the railway between Sydney & Parramatta opened &, four years later, a station was opened at Haslem’s Creek (misspelt from Haslam). Once the site was chosen by the government for a cemetery, the settlement around Haslem’s Creek grew as people who worked in jobs connected with the cemetery moved nearby. These residents, however, didn’t like the name of their village being associated with the cemetery at Haslem’s Creek, & so lobbied politicians to change the name of the settlement to Rookwood. In 1879 they were successful but, unfortunately for them, the cemetery then became known as Rookwood Necropolis. Another new name was sought for the settlement & in 1913 it was named Lidcombe (adapted from the names of two mayors, Lidbury & Larcombe.
Before Rookwood Cemetery the Europeans who died in the first few years of the settlement at Sydney Cove were buried at Dawes Point (at what is now the southern end of the Harbour Bridge) & at land near what is now Erskine & Margaret Streets (near Wynyard Station). In 1792 the main burial ground for the colony was established on a site which is now occupied by the Sydney Town Hall & St Andrew’s Cathedral. By 1818 the cemetery on the Sydney Town Hall site was full, so governor Lachlan Macquarie established a new one near the brick-fields, known as the Sandhills or Devonshire Street cemetery. Rookwood covers 315 hectares of pleasant land 16 kilometres from Sydney, with over three quarters of a million graves
Rookwood was served by a rail spur from the main line from 1867 until 1948. Mortuary stations served each of the three sections of the necropolis, with a fourth at the main junction & a fifth on Regent Street adjacent to Sydney Central Station. This rail line was used to convey funeral parties to Rookwood until 1948 when the expanded use of processions by road made it obsolete. The stations were offered to the Joint Committee of Necropolis Trustees for the price of £1 but due to maintenance costs the offer was rejected & the platforms within the cemetery were demolished. Cemetery Station No. 1 at the head of the rail spur was sold to Reverend Buckle for £100 in 1951 & was moved to Canberra in 1957 to become the All Saints Church, Canberra.
Historic Environment Record for H BUILDING, Malvern, UK
The building, having military purposes and designated locally as H building, sits on a former Government Research site in Malvern, Worcestershire at Grid Ref SO 786 447. This site was the home of the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) from 1946. It has been owned by QinetiQ since 2001 and is in the process (October 2017 to February 2018) of being sold for redevelopment.
This unique building has at its heart a ‘Rotor’ bunker with attached buildings to house radar screens and operators as well as plant such as emergency generators. Twenty nine Rotor operational underground bunkers were built in great urgency around Britain to modernise the national air defence network, following the Soviet nuclear test in 1949. Two factors make H building’s construction and purpose unique; this prototype is the only Rotor bunker built above ground and it was the home to National Air Defence government research for 30 years. This example of a ROTOR bunker is unique instead of being buried, it was built above ground to save time and expense, as it was not required to be below ground for its research purpose.
H Building was the prototype version of the Rotor project R4 Sector Operations Centre air defence bunkers. Construction began in August 1952 with great urgency - work went on 24 hours a day under arc lights. The main bunker is constructed from cross bonded engineering bricks to
form walls more than 2 feet thick in a rectangle approximately 65ft x 50ft. The two internal floors are suspended from the ceiling. The original surrounding buildings comprise, two radar control and operator rooms, offices and machine plant.
The building was in generally good order and complete. The internal layout of the bunker remains as originally designed. The internal surfaces and services have been maintained and modernised over the 55 years since its construction (Figure 3). The first floor has been closed over.
There are some later external building additions around the periphery to provide additional accommodation.
In parts of the building the suspended floor remains, with 1950s vintage fittings beneath such as patch panels and ventilation ducts.
The building has been empty since the Defence Science & Technology Laboratories [Dstl] moved out in October 2008
As lead for radar research, RRE was responsible for the design of both the replacement radars for the Chain Home radars and the command and control systems for UK National Air Defence.
Project Rotor was based around the Type 80 radar and Type 13 height finder. The first prototype type 80 was built at Malvern in 1953 code named Green Garlic. Live radar feeds against aircraft sorties, were fed into the building to carry out trials of new methods plotting and reporting air activity
A major upgrade of the UK radar network was planned in the late 1950s – Project ‘Linesman’ (military) / ‘Mediator’ (civil) – based around Type 84 / 85 primary radars and the HF200 height finder. A prototype type 85 radar (Blue Yeoman) was built adjacent to H Building in 1959. live radar returns were piped into H Building.
Subsequently a scheme to combine the military and civil radar networks was proposed. The building supported the research for the fully computerised air defence scheme known as Linesman, developed in the 1960s, and a more integrated and flexible system (United Kingdom Air Defence Ground Environment or UKADGE) in the 1970s.
The building was then used for various research purposes until the government relinquished the main site to QinetiQ in 2001. Government scientists continued to use the building until 2008. Throughout its life access was strictly controlled by a dedicated pass sytem.
Notable civil spin-offs from the research in this building include the invention of touch screens and the whole UK Civil Air Traffic Control system which set the standard for Europe.
Chronology
1952 - Construction work is begun. The layout of the bunker area duplicates the underground version built at RAF Bawburgh.
1953 - Construction work is largely completed.
1954 - The building is equipped and ready for experiments.
1956-1958 - Addition of 2nd storey to offices
1957-1960 - Experiments of automatic tracking, novel plot projection systems and data management and communications systems tested.
1960-1970 - Project Linesman mediator experiments carried out including a novel display technique known as a Touch screen ( A World First)
TOUCHSCREEN
A team led by Eric Johnson in H building at Malvern. RRE Tech Note 721 states: This device, the Touch Sensitive Electronic Data Display, or more shortly the ‘Touch Display’, appears to have the potential to provide a very efficient coupling between man and machine. (E A Johnson 1966). See also patent GB 1172222.
Information From Hugh Williams/mraths
1980-1990 - During this period experiments are moved to another building and H building is underused.
1990-1993 - The building was re-purposed and the bunker (room H57) had the first floor closed over to add extra floor area.
2008- The bunker was used until late 2008 for classified research / Joint intelligence centre
2019 - Visual Recording of the buildings interior by MRATHS. Be means of a LIDAR scan and photographs being taken. The exterior was mapped with a drone to allow a 3D Image of the building to be created via Photogrammetry. This was created in Autodesk Photo Recap.
2020 - Building demolished as part of the redevelopment of the site.

Since I make my home on the PITL, Foreign leaders are non-existent (cab signal rules). To catch something like this, I have to go east of Harrisburg into HARL or LURB (both ex-Reading) territory.
NS 212-03 is lead (timetable) eastbound lead by UP 5975 thru Sinking Spring on its way to New Jersey.
Since Antarctica palys their first gig to an at capcity crowd at Fat Tuesdays in Fairfax. They totally rocked the house and owned the stage.
They were the opening band.
