The Kintaikyo Bridge (錦帯橋, Kintaikyō) has been Iwakuni's most distinguished landmark and a subject of admiration for hundreds of years. The elegant, wooden bridge makes five bold arches onto massive stone pillars as it crosses over the Nishiki River.

Iwakuni Castle (岩国城, Iwakunijō) was built in 1608, at the beginning of the Edo Period. The site of the castle was chosen for its natural defensive advantages on top of Mount Shiroyama and half surrounded by a natural moat, the Nishiki River. The castle keep is four stories high, and looks out onto the city 200 meters below.

The battle of Shiroyama (1877) was the battle that ended the Satsuma Rebellion.
The Imperial army won against the Samurai of the Satsuma domain, who had rebelled against the Meiji government.
For these figs I returned to the vintage style, and I really liked how they turned out.
Kushiro Peace Pagoda (釧路仏舎利塔) is a 33-meter-tall monument built in 1959 by the pacifist Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji.

The stupa is located on the high ground of Shiroyama in Kushiro was funded by local fisheries leader Koshiji Nakamura as a symbol of eternal world peace and safe fishing.
The structure was designed by noted Japanese architect Minoru Ooka, who later designed several other peace pagodas across Japan.
The work is clad entirely in stone rather than plain concrete.
Kagoshima, a seaside city on Japan's Kyushu Island, is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture. It's best known for Sakurajima, an active volcano that faces Kinko Bay. At its base, the Nagisa Lava Trail winds through lava fields filled with boulders. Once set on an isolated island, the volcano became connected to the Osumi Peninsula after an eruption in 1914.

Spent the day in Kagoshima, first thing we did was take the City View bus up to Shiroyama Park which has a great view of the city and local volcano.

The view of the cherry blossoms all over the place, heading towards Shiroyama Sports Park at the foot of the mountain, was spectacular.

Walking down the beautiful brick walkway down the Shiroyama Observatory.
Shiroyama ("Castle Mountain") is located in the center of Kagoshima city commands a splendid view of the beautiful volcano Sakurajima in Kinko bay and the city. Its name comes from the fact that it was once the site of a castle where a fierce battle occurred in 1877 during the Satsuma Rebellion, the last war involving samurai warriors (“The last samurai’).
The 2-kilometer promenade to the observatory is filled with more than 600 species of plants.
Though located in an urban area, it is a treasure trove of nature populated by many birds and insects.
