More than the hobbyists’ pursuit, maker communities are disrupting manufacturing. Shared spaces offer a new amalgam of craft, industry and technology, where both tools and knowledge are pooled. July's Friday Late invited visitors to resist mass production and uncover how hacked machines and open source design are changing the way we make and live.

One that gives cyclists a bad name. Milngavie town centre is a pedestrian precinct (and not a shared space so cycling is technically not allowed). There is a children's play area just out of shot to the left and several infirm elderly pedestrians are about. Here a cyclist without a care in the world nonchalantly steering single handed is travelling so fast I can barely keep up with him panning. Fortunately the few pedestrians about were alert to him and no harm done.

Coincidently, the next day I heard of an incident where a set of keys were grabbed from someone's hand by a passing (hooded) cyclist in this area. Maybe this was a reconnaissance!

I found these pics I took from 4 years ago when H+H were in the bonding process

This wee exclusive shop, where that nice different item could be bought. Alas now closed.

Taking into account the great success of the stand-alone version this new concept was developed to transform the original four-squared table into a modular system. You can now create a table of extraordinary dimensions by adding as many sets of 4 squares with base as you wish. The Dusk Modular system is a wonderful solution for oversized dining or meeting rooms.

Tuning the rhythms that connect the world: Marie Hojlund at TEDxVennelystBlvd

There are rhythms in everything around us and every person has their own individual rhythm(s). While the rhythms within us influence how we experience the world, those around us also shape us. In her performance Marie Hojlund loops a variety of sounds and vocals which give us an insight into her personal internal rhythm. It makes tangible how our sense of time and space and the atmosphere emerges in the relations between our internal rhythms and the rhythms in the environment.

Marie Højlund is a composer under the alias ‘Marybell Katastrophy’, she has received numerous grants, released several albums and played in concerts and festivals in Europe, including Denmark, Germany, Austria, France and Italy. In her PhD research at the Department of Aesthetics and Communication of Aarhus University she studies soundscapes. She is interested in exploring various strategies to create dynamic atmospheres with sound, integrated into the physical environment in the shared space in hospitals.

I was astounded how many shops were shut in the Cowgate. It's a really depressing sight.

This past summer, Student Health Services and the Counseling Center moved from the Professional Building to a shared space in Dascomb Hall. Take a look inside.

"Shared Space" is a tool that allows scenographers to create virtual sound spheres in any space in a museum. This new experience offers the public the possibility to merge more deeply with works of art. While wearing headphones, the visitor is at the center of every sound. Depending on their location in the museum, the visitor can focus on a specific sound, story, or sound texture. In this way, senses other than sight, may be aroused and stimulated.

The Haverstock Hill site provided LUC with an opportunity to develop shared space gardens, play areas, and a green roof for residents of the redevelopment to enjoy.

The landmark building at Chalk Farm includes a mixed tenure of residential units comprising market housing, social rented and intermediate housing; garden and terrace spaces at various building levels; ground floor retail provision; and an adjacent children’s play space.

The site also interfaces with the Grade II listed London Underground Chalk Farm Station.
