Seoul Station is my arrival point at downtown Seoul, after an hourlong ride from Incheon Airport on the A'REX airport railroad. I have quite a few items on my agenda to cram into the precious few hours I have in Seoul. before moving on to Tokyo.
The old station house of Seoul Station was completed in 1925 in a Byzantine-inspired style. The overall effect, due to the Japanese occupation, is still that of a Japanized Western architectural style; in fact, one reason I wanted to take photos of Seoul Station was for comparison to its larger sister, Tokyo Station. (Unfortunately I would not have enough downtime at Tokyo Station to get photos of the exterior!)
A new station was built in 2004, and the old station house now functions as a cultural space.
My exact location is a new bus transfer center, completed in 2015; for the short hop to nearby Namdaemun, I will take a free transfer onto a city bus due to the chilly weather. Good thing I still remembered some of the bus routes from my 2008 Seoul residence; in fact, the bus I ended up taking was the Green 1711, the exact bus I used to take on my daily commute.
This journey was a great start to 2017, a challenging year for me, but it ended with me landing a new job as a Korean-language interpreter, inspired in part by this journey. Looking forward to a prosperous 2018 and beyond - and a return journey to Korea to further my linguistics.
