i tot torna a ser trist, i llunyà, i difícil.
"Potser Nadal" Poema de Miquel Martí i Pol

Moutains mean a lot to me, they always have. I feel so good when I'm there, even when the weather gets moody. No words or pictures can fully convey such feeling, but I hope this one gets you there a little...
Sentiment is intellectualized emotion, emotion precipitated, as it were, in pretty crystals by the fancy.

Covão d’Ametade is a paradisiacal setting full of bucolic and poetic sentiment, one of the most symbolic and beautiful places in the mountain named Serra da Estrela. It is located at the beginning of the Zêzere Glacier Valley. It is in Covão d'Ametade that the Zêzere River takes shape, in the small plain originating in glacial sediments that was previously a lagoon with the same origin.
It is a very attractive area due to the surrounding vegetation mostly composed of birch trees, a plant that has the particularity of creating an ecosystem with a great biodiversity. Although the place is at a quota close to 1500 meters of altitude, it is just not accessible on the most severe winter days when the roads do not allow passage due to snowfall.
The Zêzere River begins to take shape in Covão d´Ametade, where it strolls with superb vanity, as if preparing to thicken the flow of its crystalline waters along the Zêzere Glacier valley, to later deposit them, with all its strength, on the Tagus River.
Further info on Serra da Estrela can be found on this other photo of mine:

First, my apologies for bringing up a political subject in a forum that some feel should be devoid of political opinion.
I spent today reflecting on the merits of public lands in the U.S., and the potential outcome of turning over Federal lands to the states, and subsequent sales of those lands to private individuals and companies. The possibility of this transfer is more realistic today with the recent bill passed by the House, making it easier to transfer Federal land to the states, and the inauguration of Donald Trump.
The view in this photo is on Federal land, but is within 1/4 mile of evaporite ponds that cover a significant area near Moab Utah (earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=83905&eocn...). The ponds are used to concentrate potash, a potassium bearing mineral used largely in fertilizer. (BTW my father was one of the chemical engineers who consulted in the construction of this plant in the early 1960's, so my early well being is tied in small part to its existence)
Clearly the current use of this land has merits in enhancing food supply for humans. However this area is also heavily used for recreation. It is conceivable that this area would be used to enhance the production of the potash mine, and become one of the next evaporite ponds., which are already quite visible from Dead Horse Point, the high point on the mesa in the center of the skyline. Access to this scenic area and the White Rim road may also cease. It would enhance the profits of the company that operates this mine, and may increase the supply of potash, of which the U.S. produces about 2% of the world's production. It would also seriously compromise the aesthetic value of the area. Is the loss of public access to this land, and the loss of tourist money worth the benefits to greater potash production? This is only a hypothetical possibility- as far as I know there is no plan for increased use of the area for evaporite ponds, but it provides a reasonable scenario, given the sentiment in the Utah state government.
My hope is that those in power will properly weigh the pros and cons of use of Federal lands, and the potential for transferring those lands to the states. Let's keep public lands public. Let's also remember people need to make a living. The two are not antithetical.

...
Col de la Croix Morand July 12, 2014.
We are a Sunday.
At over 1100 meters altitude.
A freshness that adheres to the body and creeps everywhere ... Sensations fine and fragrant high altitude grasslands. A sense of heightened vitality. The senses ... All awakens in itself.
With Chris, we descend on Sète but with escapades.
We are passionate in these places. A little further down we pass a small village, where its inhabitants rejoueront time required to a chapter of our revolution.
July 14 approaches ...
And we ... we get closer to our Languedoc
with even a crossing loaded with moments of grace.

Within the last few days this spray painted image has appeared on what was previously a blank wall on the side of a local pub.
As we approach the centenary of the Great War armistice, I cannot imagine many people would argue with the sentiments of this!
The management of the pub should be thanked for giving permission for the artwork to be carried out and the artist applauded for using his/her incredible talent and time on such a project!

Laisser parler mon instinct me guérit
Puisque tout cela est bien trop court
J'aimerai jusqu'à mon dernier jour

Was wird kommen?
Es ist egal, wohin ich gehe,
Solange ich es wage,
Des anderen Hand zu halten,
Um die Zeit zu lieben, die vergeht.
In allem was ich tue,
Umarmen sich Wut und Liebe.
Sei es meines oder sei es deines,
Das Leben geht über uns hinaus.
Was wird kommen?
Was wird kommen?
Ich schreibe meinen Weg,
Ohne daran zu denken, daran zu denken,
Wo er enden wird
Was wird kommen, was wird kommen?
was uns später erwartet
Was wird kommen, was wird kommen?
Was wird kommen, was wird kommen?
Was wird kommen, was wird kommen?

I found this plow sitting on the old ramp at CSXT's little Pittsfield Yard and used it to capture my sentiment. I sure wish something would eat these ubiquitous GATX blue lease units and give us matched yellow and green Housatonic power back!
But I'll shoot what I can get in 2021 so here is HRRC train NX12 up from Canaan with GP38-2s 2627 (originally a straight GP38 blt Jan 1971 as Penn Central 7916) and 2328 (blt in Feb 1966 as Illinois Central GP40 number 3011) they have just cut away from their little six car train on Main 1 of the old Boston and Albany just west of CP147 on modern day CSXT's Berkshire Sub. They will couple to their big pick up and start switching up the the half mile long stub of the old B&A North Adams branch that remains in service as far as the former crossing over Route 9.
If you wish to learn about the history of the railroad in general please check out the long form caption with this shot on a different day:
And for more Housatonic shots be sure to check out my Housy album.
