32" x 44" - stained glass, vitreous tile, mirror, glass gems, crystal, semi precious beads, hand formed tiles, polymer; charcoal sanded grout
This is my first major mosaic. I worked on it for countless hours and had to grout it 2 times to get the right color. I'm (semi) pleased with the result, but learned a lot of lessons from this that I will use on future projects.

Unglazed, burnished black ceramic stirrup-spot vase with mother-of-pearl and turquoise inlay in the form of the Crested Moon Animal, which has feline, canine and fox-like features. Moche, 200 AD - 400 AD, North Coast, Peru. From the Museo Larco, Lima, Peru. Special Exhibit, Golden Kingdoms: Luxury and Legacy in the Ancient Americas. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York, USA. Copyright 2018, James A. Glazier. One of the most impressive pieces in the show to me.
If I stare at it long enough, I can almost believe I see it growing. But the vines are wire, the berries are pearls, the leaves are metal, the glistening water drops are rhinestones.
Nevertheless, this intricately embroidered necklace presages spring in a mix of nubile pastels and vibrant blues.
In the mix is a vintage leaf brooch, a vintage 'grape cluster' earring, two turquoise teardrop beads, lots of pale blue and teal rhinestones, freshwater pearls, aurora borealis glass beads, abalone shell, and hammered wire among other things.

Green jade symbolizes well-being and longevity, and green is connected to the wood element. The Ancient Egyptians, Meso-Americans, and the Chinese usually placed jade in the mouths of their departed. Most often, they used green stones, meant to represent the heart. (An interesting note: in the ancient chakra system for describing body energy, green represents the heart chakra).

Florence, Palazzo Pitti, Museo degli Argenti, February 2012
An oval plaque, originally part of the decoration of a cabinet, showing the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. The buildings are, from left to right: the Palazzo della Signoria or Palazzo Vecchio, the Galleria degli Uffizi, and the Loggia dei Lanzi. Furthermore, the equestrian statue of Cosimo I by Giambologna, the Fountain of Neptune by Ammannati, the lion Marzocco by Donatello, the David by Michelangelo, and the statue of Hercules and Cacus by Bandinelli can be seen in relief, while Cellini's Perseus and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women (in the Loggia) are outlined in gold. The pietra dura work in precious and semi-precious stones was done by Bernardino Gaffuri, while the figures in gold were created by the Dutch goldsmith Jacques (or Giacomo) Bylivert or Bilivert.
Gold, lapis lazuli, chalcedony, cornelian, heliotrope and rock crystal. C. 1599.
With apologies to the staff of the Palazzo Pitti. Photography was not allowed, but I just couldn't resist!
A long-overdue trip to the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena today! Their collection runs the gamut from Impressionism to Asian antiquities. First up is this statue of Tara.
The largest Himalayan bronze in the collection of the Norton Simon is this image of Tara, a savior goddess and the female counterpart of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Born from one of Avalokiteshvara's tears, Tara is the embodiment of feminine grace and compassion. Elegantly bejeweled (*lots* of jewels, if you zoom in), her diaphanous garment accentuates her sensuous physical form. In both Nepal and Tibet she has enjoyed great popularity, as she helps devotees overcome difficulties encountered on the path to enlightenment. Her raised left hand exhibits the gesture of teaching while her lowered right hand, with the palm facing outward, displays the gesture of charity.

Kunzite (10x8mm) and peridot three stone cushion cut cocktail ring in 18ct white gold I photographed for our jewelery collection portfolio and website.
Kunzite is the youngest member of the spodumene family first studied in 1902 by gemmologist George Frederick Kunz. a delicate pink hue often displaying a hint of violet. The more intense the colour: the more valuable the stone. Be careful sunbathing: the colour can fade in direct sunlight!
