Twist this little pebble in sunlight and deep peacock blues flash from deep inside it.

The molten rock that formed it cooled and crystallized into alternate stacked layers with two different compositions. They produced the iridescence - or 'schiller' - by multilayer interference.

A close-up of “Tiger’s Eye”, a gem/semi-precious stone from South Africa.

Tiger’s Eye has a silky lustrous look derived from its many parallel and wavy threads of minerals visible in this macro shot.

The fibres are originally composed of crocidolite, a form of asbestos**. During later stages of formation or subsequent heating they convert to quartz of the same shape. Iron minerals stain the stone with reds and yellows. The darker and bluish areas have incomplete replacement of crocidolite by quartz (Hawk’s Eye). Strong iron staining also gives dark bands.

**Harmless in Tiger's eye unless ground into dust

Happy New Year to all my friend in Asia! ⻁

This is the second year of Covid that I cannot spend this holiday in Asia. I tried to find some suitable image to post as new years greetings, but I couldn’t find a tiger photo in my archives so quickly. Instead I quickly took a close-up shot of a tiger eye!

The arcades of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque are flanking by thousands of columns, which are made of white marble panels, inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, red agate, amethyst, abalone shell and nacre. Their overall design has been inspired from a valued tree throughout Arabia, the date palm.

These semi-precious stones are imperfect for final processing because they contain impurities, so they are only rounded and strung into a beautiful necklace.

No, semi-precious stones from the gem collection at Houston's Museum of Natural Science.

This specimen nicknamed “The Rabbit Ears” is elbaite (a member of the tourmaline group), found in 1972 at the Tourmaline Queen Mine, San Diego County, California. This 24 cm example is the finest of the 33 major specimens recovered and is considered the finest North American tourmaline. The crystals are undamaged and grow from quartz crystal and are accompanied by smaller tourmaline crystals.

A collection of semi-precious tumble polished stones that were a bit of an obsession many years ago. Now they live in a bowl and are still enjoyed.

Lapis lazuli or lapis for short, is a deep blue metamorphic rock used as a semi precious stone that has been prized for its intense color. It was used in the funeral mask of Tutankhamon (1341-1323 BC.) Most of it is mined in Afghanistan. At the end of the Middle Ages it began to be exported to Europe, where it was ground into powder and made into ultramarine, the finest and most expensive of all blue pigments.

These are my lapis beads I got when in college and have always loved their blue color and flecks of gold.

A mirror studded with semi precious stones, gifted by one of my best friends and I'm so sad that she's no more. This is of great sentimental value to me.

HMM !!!

My father gave me these three hearts.

She should always remind me of him and his love for me.

I always have a heart with me and when things get mixed up in my life, I take it in my hand and I remember the words my father said to me when he gave me hearts.

And it helps ..... !!!!

At 1,869 carats, this emerald is credited with being the largest uncut natural emerald discovered in North America. The gem is growing on a bed of large gypsum and mica crystals.

My favourite ring, set with a yellow sapphire and diamonds, resting on a small selection of semi-precious stones.

The “Alma Queen” is considered to be the greatest mineral specimen in North America (I read). It was found in 1965 by John Soules and Warren Good at the Sweet Home Mine, in the Alma district of Park County, Colarado. Rhodochrosite is a rose-red mineral consisting essentially of manganese carbonate. Seen at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas in St. Vitus Cathedral is one of the most sacred places in the Czech Republic, built between 1362 and 1367 under Charles IV. It honors St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia, whose tomb lies beneath the chapel. The walls are richly decorated with semi-precious stones and 14th-century frescoes depicting scenes from Christ’s Passion and St. Wenceslas’s life. A heavily guarded iron door leads to the chamber holding the Bohemian Crown Jewels, accessible only with seven official keys. The chapel is a powerful symbol of Czech history, faith, and royal legacy.

Malachite, tiger eye, turquoise, amethyst and jasper for the Smile on Saturday group, challenge: Gemstones. Happy Saturday!

..................................................

The sadness is already close to autumn, and it's sad to part with summer…

I must admit, but I'm a little sorry that it's time for us to say goodbye.

It was very good with him: his warmth charmed,

But no matter how much warmth there was, it will always be not enough for us…

His dawns in the morning sensually awakened our soul,

We found solace in the hot sun rays,

We did not regret anything, and the rain was only a joy to us,

Summer was good for us, it had everything we dreamed of…

There was only one sadness left, the hope that he would come back again,

What will warm again in the rays of the sun hanging in the sky,

That summer will love us, and we will love it too,

Otherwise, it's impossible to just live, and we can't do it any other way…

“A nanny, by being the child's doughty defender, may put sensitive noses out of joint.” – Jacob Rees-Mogg (British politician)

Antique jewellery can often be not just beautiful, but also a wonderful window into a time gone by, such as this charming antique nanny brooch dating from the Victorian era. Dating from the 1880s, this was, as the name suggests, worn by the family nanny as a traditional brooch and when she was out with the children, if they tore a hole or seam in their clothing whilst playing, it could quickly be repaired thanks to the hollow section in the centre that contained needle and thread. Made simply of brass and set with a goldstone or aventurine with a stylised fleur de lys leaf pattern to either side of it, the brooch measures 48.8 millimetres in length by 6 millimetres wide at the centre, and one end cleverly unscrews to allow the needle and thread to be kept securely inside and ready at a moment's notice.

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 1st of September is "needles". I immediately thought of an etui (a small ornamental case for holding needles) of which I have several in my possession. Then I remembered that my mother gave me an antique nanny brooch a few years ago. She had great pleasure watching my face light up with delight as I unscrewed the secret compartment to reveal the needle and threads, more than a century old, carefully ensconced in the bar of the brooch. Although not made in gold or platinum, or set with sapphires or diamonds, there is no doubt that this antique nanny brooch is just as charming as any antique brooch and certainly a wonderful talking point. One can almost imagine the scene now with rambunctious children of a wealthy Victorian era family playing in a park, whilst under the caring gaze of Nanny. I hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.
