With the invention of the camera phone, everybody is now a pro photog, not to mention a selfie-expert.
This photo represents the word gathering for me, because gathering can be understood in two different ways. One would be to come together, gathering around each other and the other one is that an object or person gathers/attracts all your attention. In this photo I wanted to bring those two meanings together and what doesn’t explain the daily life of a teenage girl better than: “selfie!!” Coming together as a group of teenage girls almost never goes by without taking a selfie. Personally not my style, but I took this photo to annoy the person who sees it. Many very girly things come together in this picture and if that’s not your style, you will understand what I am trying to show: iPhones often gather all the attention of a girl, leaving less attention for the people around them that are physically and not virtually around them. It also annoys me that the attention goes to the phone and not the camera, (thereby the observer) where you can’t see what the people in the photo see. I purposely made them do a duck-face, because many people (not me, to be honest) think that that’s an annoying pose, but it is the classical “Instagram-selfie” pose, so it could only add even more to my Instagram photo.
I set this scene up by laying the three girls down on a purple carpet with sunglasses, not only to bring in some summer feeling, but because I thought that it would look cool to see 6 phone-reflections. After attempting to take a photo from the bottom, inspired by a photo in the yearbook, but the amount of double chins I saw.. I couldn’t do it!! It was very hard to get the girls to all keep still and not move their hands with the phones in them after I have positioned them correctly. Another silly challenge was to not have my foot in the photo which happened on most of my earlier shots, which were actually nice, but the sock was in all of them. The more technical problem was that unfortunately again the day that I had planed to take the wow and all the girls had time, it was cloudy and rainy, so by 2:30 when I took the photo it was very dark and I had to have an ISO of 1600 so that my shaking couldn’t be captured in my image. I even turned on the light and still had to use the smallest f/stop and a fairly slow shutter-speed. I cropped this photo to measure 1x1, because this is the Instagram format. Lucky I had already thought of that before seeing the sock in the left corner and didn’t delete the photo.
I start looking more and more like a retired person. How could that be possible? Anyway I'm wearing my best shirt.
My first foray into the selfie genre since early adolescense (holiday greetings to friends & relatives excepted).
I'm so out of it pop-culturally that I'd never even heard the term selfie until this year.
So, I decided to pay combined tribute to my bafflement that people use ipads as their regular camera with my surprise at the selfie genre to take my very own selfie with an iPad mini.
Anyone else go in their backyard and take self-portraits with a remote shutter in their free time?
