A few relics of grandfather's time as a law stationer, once as everyday as a ballpoint pen but now exotic curios.

As far as I know (and I may be wrong) the box-handled tool on the left is a 'seal cracker', for removing sealing wax. Real sealing wax is brittle, unlike the coloured hot-melt glue which passes for wax these days. It could not be removed without breaking into pieces. As well as a plain hatched seal, there are four branded sticks of wax: H.J.Ryman, Stephens' Bank Wax, East Anglian and SO (His Majesty's Stationery Office).

Above these are four quill pens — this is how they were used, the feathery plumes you see in films are just for effect. The penholder above has been notched at the end, presumably for easy recognition of different nib sizes. At the top is a bone-handled erasing knife, made by Simpson of 55 Strand.

They all sit on a sheet of real vellum, ready ruled for a lease, mortgage or conveyance, supplied by Oyez of Chancery Lane.

Locke and Lode – She went to jail for love

Evangelin Locke and Anastasia Lode are interstellar bounty hunters. Locke grew up in the wealthy area of Minuet 4 in the Camus system, gaining her degree in the hallowed halls of Batavia. Her aptitude for detective work and keen intelligence saw her apply for Pinkertons, before striking oout alone with a little ship and a wall full of certificates.

Lode, by contrast, was born in the back of a taxi cab on the third moon of Grum. Her father, who lived in the cab, abandoned it five minutes after her birth. After a childhood spent as a grafter and pool hustler, the penniless Lode took enforcement work with a local hood named Elias Blokk. When Blokkk betrayed her, she chased him down. Also chasing Elias Blokk was a certain Evangelin Locke.

The guard appeared behind her suddenly, dragging her away from Dirk as he crushed her against his manly chest.

“Time to go,” said the guard as he secured her wrists in cruel shackles.

“So soon?” she asked.

“Be brave my darling,” said Dirk who, despite his manliness, could only barely stifle a sob as his sweetheart was led away to begin her twenty year sentence.

How could life have been so cruel? Dad was hard up, he and mum had made a mistake, and her poor father couldn’t go to prison. She’d done the only thing possible – to tell them she’d done it, and make the sacrifice to be separated from Dirk forever! Oh Cruel fate!!

“I wish you’d put that book down.”

“Huh,” replied Anastasia, setting down ‘She went to jail for love’ on the little spaceship’s dashboard, “you said I needed more culture, Locke. You said to broaden my mind. You said to…”

“I know what I said, Lode,” replied Evangelin, “I’m afraid a slush prison novel you bought at the book store on Hilary Clinton Spaceport is hardly cultured, is it. I think I preferred you constantly puking up the contents of last night’s questionable takeout meals all over the dashboard. At least then I didn’t have to see ‘the face’.

“What face? I don’t have a specific face…expect you know…this gorgeous one right here?”

“Yes you do. It’s the ‘I’m trying to look smart by reading a book’ face. It wouldn’t be so pathetic if it wasn’t for the fact that Harrison Elgy novels are the worst in the Galaxy. Hell, I’m surprised there’s not a bounty out there on him for us to go collect.”

“Well we could do with it,” said Lode propping her feet up on the dashboard and examining her t-shirt, “we’re not exactly snowed under with contracts. What the hell is this?”

“What?” replied Locke, looking at her partner.

“This,” said Lode pointing at a stain on her t-shirt. When did I have ketchup?”

Locke closed her eyes for a second.

“Three days ago. On Ganymede, when we were handing in that gang of Selvian buccaneers.”

“Hang on,” said Lode licking the t-shirt, “false alarm. It’s curry sauce. Two weeks ago, remember? On Burnham prime. I was in that public toilet so long I…”

“Just….” began Locke, “just read your damn book, ok?”

“Whatever Trevor,” said Lode picking up the novel, “you’re the boss.”

“Hmm” replied Locke, concentrating almost too hard on her driving.

Her cell wasn’t too bad. In fact it was downright homely. She shuddered when they locked the door, sealing her to her grim fate. She longed for Dirk, her body ached for him.

“Hang on a minute,” said Lode putting down her book again, “that’s some curry to still have flavor in a stain after two weeks. We have to go there again…”

Tanker Sealing departs from Hamburg.

Tanker Sealing verläßt Hamburg.

This was one day not long ago, I had lots of dolly heads to spray ^^

I use an airbrush with a non-toxic matt varnish, and an extraction booth so I'm able to do it all in my work space. The dolls aren't stored on the desktop by the way! They're kept in drawers out of the light and only come out when I'm working on them or they're drying.

Der Kaufmann Georg Gisze / The Merchant Georg Gisze (1532) Detail

Gemäldegalerie Berlin

From the objects shown in this portrait it is evident that the sitter was anxious that not only his likeness but also something of his way of life should be presented. A Latin couplet above the merchant's head intimates how faithfully the artist has rendered every aspect of the man : `What you see here, this picture, shows Georg's features and figure such is his eye in real life, such is the shape of his cheeks.' Yet it is clear from the very form this couplet takes that the picture is meant to convey more than outward appearances and to underline the humanist milieu in which the merchant wished to be seen. The same mood is implicit in a Latin motto inscribed on the rear wall immediately beside a pair of scales: `Nulla sine merore voluptas' (`No joy without sorrow').

The merchant is depicted standing in his workroom, behind a table covered with a richly embroidered cloth. Among the many objects on the table and the wall which illustrate his trade, the Venetian-glass vase, containing carnations and other flowers, clearly has a special significance; in the medieval language of symbols the carnation was a sign of betrothal.

From the shelf in the top right-hand corner several keys, signet-rings and a spherical container are hanging, the latter presumably containing string. On the table is a pewter writing-stand with goose-feathers, ink, sand, wax disks and sealing-wax. Beside it are a pair of scissors, a signet-ring and a seal. Near the table's edge, precisely placed in the centre foreground, stands a small table-clock which, together with the fragile glass vase and the perishable flowers, is a reminder of the passage of time, as was the hour-glass in earlier pictures.

The name Georg Gisze occurs frequently and appears several times in various styles of handwriting on the documents attached to the wall. From the letter in the merchant's hand one gathers that he has been corresponding with a brother in Germany. The subject of the portrait, the son of an alderman, was born in Danzig in 1497.

I wasn't going to upload this picture on account of a few photographic flaws, however I have decided to upload it. It is very grainy, but it was very dark and the floodlights were on by now. Also the blurred fans arms in the shot bisect the image. What it does show is Wakefields winger Chris Riley crossing for his hat trick against Hull KR and effectively sealing the win for Wakefield. The glum look of the opposing fans in the background are a stark contrast to the excited celebrations of the foreground Wakefield fans.

Taping covers everything that you don't want the sealant to stick to..

Take your time with this.

After finishing and smoothing the sealant, immediately remove the tape, so it leaves a thin, even line.

Waiting allows the sealant skim over, damaging the finished surface.

...but this lens doesn't have sealing

It was fine though.

Close-up of the U.S. seal on the 2008 Texas State Capitol ornament.

Texas was an independent Republic before becoming part of its larger neighbor, the United States, in 1845. The U.S. seal commemorates the thirteen original states with 13 stripes, 13 stars, 13 arrows, and 13 leaves on the olive branch.

The ornament reflects one of the most beautiful architectural designs of the Texas State Capitol: the terrazzo flooring of the Rotunda beneath the Capitol dome.

Sealing her nest tube with pieces of rose leaf, joined together by chewing the edges together.

I use 3M 5200 FastCure polyurethane to seal the windows and end caps. It has proven itself for decades.

Apply enough sealant to fully full the gap. Seal only the top and side seams, leave the bottom unsealed to let any moisture escape.

Using a glove finger, wet the finger and pull it along the gap, smoothing the fresh sealant.

When happy with the appearance, immediately remove the tape, before is skims over.

Wait a half hour before attempting to clean any sealant around the edges. Use lacquer thinner for cleanup.

Polyurethane is very sticky and hard to remove from skin and clothes. Wear disposable gloves and old clothes when using the stuff. Lacquer thinner and other solvents are hazardous, when used in quantity. I wear an organic respirator when doing the final cleaning before applying the sealant.

A different sort of spoon.

You heat little wax pellets in the spoon over the flame. When melted, stir, pour, then stamp.

This was a mix of three shades of iridescent blue pellets plus a pale blue-green pellet to liven it up.

Aside: No - it's not on a mirror. I was concerned the candle might ruin the black paper, so I covered it with a thin sheet of plexiglass from an old picture frame I keep for just such a purpose. However yes, it does create nice reflections as a side effect.

See comments for what it looks like when stamped.

Photographed at the Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden, Kaneohe, Hawaii.

After a bit of a lull (no doubt due to the poor weather), there's renewed activity in my garden bee-hotels. Here, a Megachile Leafcutter Bee puts the finishing touches to a new tube of brood cells.

Sealing the day after celebrating the life of our dear photography friend George Bayode, whom recently passed away ... www.flickr.com/photos/gobayode/. He inspired our photography and showed us how to see the world in light and sky ... Georgie delivered this wonderful sunset to end the day ... and no surprise, we had a full moon on the mountain view! G always told me I'd graduate from his school of life-photography once I'd shot the moon ... unfortunately I never got the chance to ... but I'm sure he would have loved this sunset shot... another one of his favourites!

Sealing the third panel, ready to dip.

The trunk of a Red Sealing Wax Palm. We have a a few of these in our garden, but I'd never noticed this green-to-red transition until yesterday. I have to thank a gecko that was sunning itself nearby for leading me to this detail.

Work has begun on the outer panels

At this point I've realized there are going to be some cracks where I don't actually light from the inside filtering through. Ideas I've had for sealing those up involve cardstock paper and making a kind of light gasket at these cracks.
