Despite the ugly functional fountain and the sealing, the square is still a centre of attraction for the residents of the neighbourhood near the Collège Jean Moulin.

This exposure was a test of my camera's weather sealing as well as a first pass using a little Intentional Camera Movement (ICM). Camera still turns on, so it's a win!

The Bohemian waxwing has a circumpolar distribution, breeding in northern regions of Eurasia and North America. Named for the nomadic ranging patterns of its winter flocks, the Bohemian Waxwing moves widely, seeking crops of winter fruits, in particular the mountain ash. The Bohemian Waxwing is monogamous and nonterritorial, likely because its fruit foods are not defensible owing to their typically ephemeral and abundant nature. As a consequence of nonterritoriality, waxwings do not have true songs. Indeed, the hallmark of this family is a high degree of apparent cooperation associated with finding and feeding on scattered, abundant fruit crops. Waxwings are gregarious, forming large migratory and winter flocks in which individuals associate closely, with little antagonism.

The English name "waxwing" refers to the bright red tips of the secondary feathers on its wings, which look like drops of sealing wax.

The waxwings are a family, Bombycillidae, There are three species, the Bohemian, cedar, and Japanese waxwings.

Well past midnight, our imaginary protagonist is hard at work, fuelled by brandy, tobacco and chocolate!

Technical: surprisingly large number of layers needed for this image. Three base photos, exposure blended then the composite layers for each painting, tobacco smoke, embers in pipe, background wall image then layers for various fixes and cleanup, adding 'shinies' (black layer, in colour dodge mode, then very low flow white airbrushing to add shininess to some areas of metal and glass).

For Macro Mondays 'Back in the Day' theme: a glob of sealing wax impressed with the letter 'R'.

Technical: a 19 image focus stack illuminated by natural window light. Processed in Helicon Focus, cropped in Lightroom to 16:9 format. Dust and fibre removal in Photoshop. Converted to mono in Silver Efex Pro. Split toning and sharpening in Lightroom.

Many thanks for your views, faves and comments. HMM!

As winter approaches and the evenings draw in, the lower light levels outside interact differently with the oil lamp to produce a much darker and warmer scene than you get during the lighter part of the year. I love the warmth that oil lamps or candles produce in a scene. (The title — ’1794' comes from the date of the old parchment document, which I managed to catch in the magnifying glass).

The owl butterflies, the genus Caligo, are known for their huge eyespots, which resemble owls' eyes. They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central, and South America.

Owl butterflies are very large, 65–200 mm (2.6–7.9 in), and fly only a few meters at a time, so avian predators have little difficulty in following them to their settling place. However, the butterflies preferentially fly in dusk, when few avian predators are around. The Latin name, Caligo means darkness, may possibly refer to their active periods .

Bohemian Waxwing - Bombycilla garrulus

The waxwings are passerine birds classified in the genus Bombycilla. They are brown and pale grey with silky plumage, a black and white eyestripe, a crest, a square-cut tail and pointed wings. Some of the wing feathers have red tips, the resemblance of which to sealing wax gives these birds their common name. According to most authorities, this is the only genus placed in the family Bombycillidae, although Phainoptila is sometimes included. There are three species, the Bohemian waxwing (B. garrulus), the Japanese waxwing (B. japonica) and the cedar waxwing (B. cedrorum).

Waxwings are not long-distance migrants, but move nomadically outside the breeding season. Waxwings mostly feed on fruit, but at times of year when fruits are unavailable they feed on sap, buds, flowers and insects. They catch insects by gleaning through foliage or in mid-air. They often nest near water, the female building a loose nest at the fork of a branch, well away from the trunk of the tree. She also incubates the eggs, the male bringing her food to the nest, and both sexes help rear the young.

They are not true long-distance migrants, but wander erratically outside the breeding season and move south from their summer range in winter. In poor berry years huge numbers can erupt well beyond their normal range, often in flocks that on occasion number in the thousands

Here is one more photo of a Waxwing taken in South Yorkshire last week. I decided to post this one because it shows a better view of the wing feathers that look like they have been dipped in red sealing wax and which gave rise to the name Waxwing. The scientific name is Bombycilla garrulus. Bombycilla means silk-tailed, referring to the bright yellow tail tip. Garrulus refers to their habit of constantly calling. Tromsø has been the North Norwegian capital of sealing. Following its establishment as the “Gateway to the Arctic” in the late 19th century, Tromsø became a key as a base for many polar expeditions. The Polar Museum preserves and conveys stories related to this aspect of the history of Tromsø and the Arctic.

The Polar Museum’s permanent exhibitions deal with sealing, overwintering trapping, the stories of famous trappers such as Henry Rudi and Wanny Wolstad, the expeditions of Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen and the cultural history of Svalbard. Click here to read more about the exhibitions.

Tromsø, a city in northern Norway, is a major cultural hub above the Arctic Circle. It’s famed as a viewing point for colorful Northern Lights that sometime light up the nighttime sky. The city’s historic center, on the island of Tromsø, is distinguished by its centuries-old wooden houses.

The city centre of Tromsø contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789. The city is a cultural centre for its region, with several festivals taking place in the summer.
