The Northern Sea Otter is the largest member of the weasel family but the smallest marine mammal. We found this one trying to eat its feet in the Homer, Alaska harbor.

This was a special encounter for us. We had heard that otters might be spotted in the Homer harbor so went to check it out. We pulled into the parking lot at low tide and the water level was way below us. I could scan most the harbor with binoculars but with all the boats there could be otters that we wouldn't be able to see. After scanning for a while...no otters. Just a floating piece of driftwood. Wait...that driftwood just moved. OTTER!

We exited the car as quickly as possible and headed down the steep gangplank to the docks. When we approached the otter, we could tell it was sound asleep because we could hear it snoring. After about 20 minutes it woke up and groomed for quite a while. They have no blubber but the thickest fur of any animal on earth. Grooming is critical to keep their fur in peak condition for maximum insulation.

As a likely frequent visitor to the harbor, it was very habituated to people and paid no attention to us whatsoever.

Our first ever sighting of a sea otter, a major thrill.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU to ALL the key workers who are carrying on to benefit the rest of us - we applaud you all. Alan;-)👏👏👏👏👏

From a trip to the Gold Coast, winter 2013. Initially, the beach was deserted, bar a lone canoe, footsteps leading to the Nobby Beach surf life saving club bar, and a seagull. Then this bloke turned up...

Strong winds and dangerous sea currents make this section of coastline one of the most dangerous locations on the coast of Iceland. Telephoto lens at 200mm compresses the scene.
