An SD70MAC and an SD70MACe lead Run 35 down Main Track 2 of the UP KC Metro Sub at St. Louis Ave. en route from KCS's Knoche Yard to UP's Armourdale Yard. Previously, transfers from the KCS had been sent to UP's Neff Yard, but now they will be moved to 18th St. and Armourdale Yards due to the closure of Neff as part of UP's Unified Plan 2020. 10/15/19.

After a stop at Buc'ees, I got in position at Berthoud to photograph the Longmont Switch (R-PWR4211 30F) returning from Fort Collins with BNSF SD70MAC 9709 and SD70MACe 9716 for power.

A few coal trains sit staged in the Staples Yard on this perfect October afternoon. One is led by the 9749, an H2 MAC and a Grinstein MAC on the head-end.

The barren landscape of northern New Mexico is a magical place full of rich history and artifacts that tell a story of the area's past. Most of it is gone but some of it still stands as a reminder. Both the village and rock formation of Wagon Mound loom in the background as off in the distance, the sound of cars on the interstate will get overpowered by the sound of an eastbound BNSF train as it approaches the semaphore intermediates between Wagon Mound and Levy, on August 8, 2018.

Run 20 with a KCS SD70MACe in the lead passes by KC Union Station on the way to Knoche Yard with the transfer from BNSF's Argentine yard.

A unit fertilizer heads west on the Wayzata Sub, coming from Madison, IL, and heading to it's destination in, coincidentally, another town called Madison in South Dakota.

It was a foggy morning in eastern Kentucky and I was out with a gaggle of other railfans who had descended upon Appalachia for the previous day’s Santa Train festivities. On top of the Santa Train, CSX was running all kinds of other neat things that weekend including this coal empty led by an SD70MACe and a YN2 AC4400CW. Chasing trains on the Big Sandy Subdivision is always fun due to the large amount of C&O signal installations that are still standing, such as this cantilever at EM Cabin in Emma, KY. Us railfans were lined up right in the middle of the gauge on the main track, but the crew didn’t seem to mind. When something moderately cool is running, common safety concerns seem to go out the window. Probably wouldn’t have stood there if I could go back in time, but it did make for a nice angle. Emma, KY, 11/19/2023.

Overcast skies linger across the Front Range as CitiRail ES44AC No. 1214 leads a Warbonnet painted C44-9W and BNSF SD70MACe on the Provo-Denver manifest as it descends the grade through Coal Creek Canyon, Colorado, on February 14, 2019.

Not a bad birthday gift from BNSF.

The C EBMSLP 003 twists through Tomah as it makes its way down the Joint Line.

BNSF SD70MACe No. 9716 leads the H-LINDEN with a cool consist slowly passes through Roggen, Colorado on BNSF’s Brush subdivision.

Loaded coal train CSX T208 has the green through the end of the Big Coal siding in Sproul, West Virginia and passes under a C&O signal cantilever with a dwarf mounted to it that guards this interlocking. T208 was running a loaded double train with a 2x2x0 distributed power setup and will head to Handley where the train will be split.

CSX L79006 has a flared SD70AC rebuild, CSXT 4713 on the point for the return trip, presumed to be the first of its kind in South Floriida. For whatever reason it idles just shy of Galloway Road at dusk on an otherwise cloudy day, which was forecast to get stormy as the evening set in. A moderate rain from a frontal system moves in giving the 4713 a little bath. Fortunately the crew kept the headlights on favoring some patient photography of the unit under rapidly fading light.

The BNSF H-TULMEM with a n SD70MACe leader heads south at Catalpa Street in Springfield, MO.

BNSF SD70MACe 9728 leads CN ES44DC 2327 and westbound coal empty E PAMBTM0 47 on the BNSF Sand Hills Sub just west of Bingham. This Black Thunder Mine bound empty came from Alabama Power's Plant Miller in Palos. AL and is being helped out on the rear by BNSF ES44AC 6227 and BNSF SD70ACE 9268 as the DPUs. Catching something other then a GEVO or ACE leading is somewhat exciting on this part of the railroad. Heading west towards our destination of Alliance worked well with this as we caught up to the empty thanks to some eastbound traffic and meets on the few areas of single track. The 134 car coal empty made very good time out of Ravenna until it got into a line of 4 westbounds getting into Alliance. With a very hot summer in 2021, the coal was running well over the Sand Hills Sub. How many more years of this is the question at hand.

I didn't even know it was possible to have a locomotive be so clean. But here we are with a recently repainted, flagless ACe leading a manifest through Houston in 2022. Probably the cleanest locomotive I've ever seen.

And oh yeah, there's a nice-looking BNSF SD70MAC rebuild to the right too.

With suspicious activity going on in the distance (people climbing out of the hopper), SD70MACe BNSF 9749 is out front of a tied down loaded RWSX coal train in Norfolk Southern's Harris Yard in Memphis.

The same train I shot a week and half earlier with the SD70MACe leader is now returning to Oklahoma again after another trip to Caballo Mine in Wyoming for more loads of black diamonds. Now symboled as BNSF train C-CAMMAH0-26A, it's approaching 30th St. on BN 1, about ready to leave the KCT and enter the BNSF Ft. Scott Sub. Behind the train is the former KCT Roundhouse, now home to DST Systems.

This train is bound for the Western Farmers Electric Cooperative power plant near Hugo, OK via interchange with the KRR at Madill, OK. 9/18/24.

CSX SD70MACe 4732 leads CSX M642 West to a stop in South Holland, IL.

BNSF 9721 SD70MACe pulls loaded coal out of Black Thunder Mine's west loadout and underneath the highway before getting onto the mainline. The use of this massive culvert was much more economical than pouring concrete.

BNSF 4083 leads a six engine consist out of Memphis as it approaches a Mississippi River crossing on the Frisco Bridge with the H MEMKCK1 07A.

CSX SD70MACe 4534 leads CP 281 West through Morton Grove, IL.

Two coal trains- one with a GEVO leading a pair of SD70ACes, the other with an SD70MACe on the point, wait for new crews at Blue Island Avenue, Chicago. Behind the trains are intermodal cars in UP's adjacent Global I terminal, which has since shut down.

CSX E885 passes the former Purina elevator in downtown Fortville, Indiana with a fresh SD70MACe on point.

The BNSF E-NMANAM coming into Fordland with a pair of SD70MACs up front, one rebuilt as an SD70MACe.

Brand new (at the time) SD70MACe 4562 leads a northbound CSX auto rack train along Nickajack Lake near New Hope, Tennessee.

After sitting tied down for many days just east of La Plata, MO. U-MNSNYF finally resumed its journey south to Fort Worth, TX. This train being a loaded ethanol train, the priority to get this across the railroad at a decent clip wasn't high. That said, after numerous days of being tied down for long periods of time, we see BNSF SD70MACe 9750 leading U-MNSNYF south through Norman in the middle of the night.

An SD70MACe leads a monster double coal empty into Palmer Lake on its trip up the Joint Line.

The afterglow of a summer day gives final luminescence to BNSF coal loads before darkness sets in over the eastern Wyoming prairies north of Orin. Forty-five years since this line's completion, traffic has almost certainly peaked and entered terminal decline, but it's still a good show. SD70MACe No. 9752 takes the lead on this day.

A rebuilt SD70MACe followed behind by an SD70ACe lead BNSF train C-WTMPAM1-07C down BN 2, the Coal Route, on the KCT at 23rd St. 5/6/22.

Loaded BNSF coal train C BTMCLS0 77A cruises through Avery, Iowa as it makes its trip from the Powder River Basin's Black Thunder Mine to the Shawnee Fossil Plant in Kentucky. One of BNSF's SD70MAC's that has been rebuilt and repainted as an SD70MACe brings up the rear DPU position.

SD70MACe, number 9729 gets the honors of leading this westbound Northtown to Grand Forks freight through Ramsey, MN

A pair of KCS SD70MACe's head north up Track 79 of the KCT North-South Corridor at Old Union Depot Interlocking with a transfer from KCS's Knoche Yard to UP's Neff Yard, which makes a circuitous routing around the West Bottoms in order to get between the two yards.

Both of these former TFM SD70MACs feature retrofitted Mitsubishi inverters and traction control systems, which explains the primer patches on both units. The work has been done by Progress Rail in Mayfield, KY and Patterson, GA.

This transfer from KCS's Knoche Yard to UP's Neff Yard is handled by KCS Job Run 36 now. Previously, UP handled both transfers both to and from the KCS, and UP train YKC49 took care of the transfer from Knoche to Neff. Now, UP train YKS97 delivers to the KCS, and the power will then sit there at Knoche until later that evening when Run 36 goes on duty to take a transfer to the UP. 7/29/17.

I thought this shot I took was cool of K596 stopped with both the shady side and bright side of the SD70MACe leader. TAKEN WITH PERMISSION BY A RAILROAD EMPLOYEE.

S709 rolls north through Nestle with CSX SD40-2 #8017 in the lead. A CSX SD70MACe and CN GEVO Trail.

NS 732 screams south into Hiram behind a pair of BNSF motors, with a rebuilt H3 painted SD70MACe leading. He would swap at Rockdale before heading on south to Plant Scherer.

BNSF 9750 is on the spur track next to Main 1 on the Joint Line in Spruce, CO.

BNSF will park locomotives at various locations on the Joint Line between Denver and Palmer Lake to help out if a train stalls out climbing the grade. Traditionally, these units would be located in Castle Rock, here at Spruce, and Palmer Lake. I'm not sure if they park one in Castle Rock any more, and I can't remember the last time I saw one in Palmer Lake. This is the first time I've seen an elusive MACe serving in this role, so I had to document it (especially since I can't seem to run across one leading!)...

An SD70MACe rebuild and an ACe approach the 12th St. Viaduct while passing Tower 2 at Old Union Depot Interlocking as they lead BNSF train C-CAMMAH6-24W. They're on Track 82 of the KCT North-South Corridor, which becomes BN 1 around the I-670 overpass. These coal loads are bound for the Western Farmers Electric Cooperative power plant near Hugo, OK via interchange with the Kiamichi Railroad at Madill, OK.

In addition to the EMD power on the head end, another pair of EMD's were also the DPU's on the train, which were also an ACe and an SD70MAC. It's not all that common anymore to find solid EMD consists on BNSF coal trains, especially with the influx of GE "heavies" over the past year. 9/7/24.

CSX R615's DPU, an SD70MACe, brings up the rear of the Creech empties as they skirt the Cumberland River at Varilla.
