The first major snow of the year fills the air in Harborcreek, Pennsylvania as CSX I010 breaks the night's winter silence and speeds east. Leading the way are CSX 4578 and 4577, a pair of freshly rebuilt SD70MACe's completed at CSX's Huntington Shops.

On Sunday night, I got to spend some time up on the St. Joe Sub after a concert in Atchison, and eventually ended up chasing a Siemens generator north a ways ( flic.kr/p/2nTCLCn ). The special went in the hole at Leavenworth, but I figured that I'd photograph whatever was coming at us, and sure enough, it was this rather nice looking BNSF SD70MACe on the C-EBMMLM2 88A.

This is the BNSF 9728, a 1996-built SD70MAC that was delivered in the post-merger Grinstein Green colors with BNSF hood letters. Around 2016, this unit was rebuilt with new electronics and traction motors, rebranded as an SD70MACe, and repainted in BNSF's Wedge scheme.

Just a week old after a rebuild at CSX's Huntington Heavy Repair Shops and wearing a new scheme to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Operation Lifesaver, CSX SD70MACe 4568 leads manifest M316 as it departs from Russell, Kentucky. The morning sun catches the perfect break in the otherwise stormy skies as the train rolls past what was once the site of AK Steel's Ashland works, though the site has been nearly completely demolished. BNSF likes to park a just-in-case locomotive here in case one of their trains fails to make it up the grade between Denver and Palmer Lake.

Seeing as how there are only 20-something of these rebuilt MACes on the roster, this was a must-shoot sighting.

Amongst the general quietness on this Sunday morning, Northtown released a couple of eastbounds. The first was this 1 x 1 with the proper "one" on the point, that being a 70MACe. They are traversing the plant at Seventh Street with a clear shot to Prescott and down the river.

I feel like I should start calling this bridge the MACe bridge with how many of my shots are from here.

There isn't any big story from yesterday about this. I had heard that this MACe duo was in the yard, and having a bit of time between a photoshoot and meeting up for a friend's birthday, I decided to head to the west end to see if he'd move. Well, as soon as I parked, he started rolling, so I headed to Pleasant Dale to wait.

If you remember my story from last weekend, you'll know that I got screwed over the last time I was here, and with scattered clouds in the sky, I knew I was taking a gamble. However, with the sun how it was, I knew I'd rather chance the shot here than to shoot him at Emerald. Unlike the last attempt, however, they kept him moving and it wasn't too long before his headlights came into view, just as the sun cleared from behind the last cloud for a little bit.

I would have preferred to get more of a broadside with the matching units, but beggars can't be choosers, and I walked away happy either way.

Northtown-Minot heads west into Becker on a near-perfect summer afternoon.

It was about 9 months ago I had a couple opportunities to shoot the 9749 leading Becker coal trains, and with some luck I capitalized.

Now, the 9749, a MAC rebuilt into a MACe, is in mixed freight service with another AC EMD.

Of course, no train photography outing with Todd would be complete without some cloud drama! As you can see, it worked out wonderfully!

BNSF 9769 leads a southbound coal train up Main 1 as it approaches Tomah Rd. on the outskirts of Castle Rock, CO.

After passing up the previous two trains, I unexpectedly stumbled onto this one, and this is what I spent chasing the rest of the morning down to the Air Force Academy.

Why? Because I've been trying to catch a MACe on the point since they first came out several years ago. With only 20-something of them on the roster, I figured my chances were pretty slim. Now, granted, they have been showing up more frequently on the Joint Line lately, but it was nice to actually catch one up front.

The H3 paint scheme is interesting on these as it seems to be a lighter shade than the other H3 units and lighter than the H4 on the SD75s...not sure why. Regardless, it's something different and was something worth getting geek'd over!

Also, the entire train is in the shot. It's hard to see, but you can barely make out the heat shimmies of the DPUs on that ridge in the background.

Fresh out of the CSX Huntington SD70MACe rebuild program, CSX 4714 leads manifest freight M692 as it heads north on the Big Sandy Subdivision. The train is passing the C&O signals at the Marrowbone control point in Marrowbone, Kentucky as it heads towards Shelby Yard for a recrew.
