By spring 2001, the Friendly Southern Pacific had been gone for over four years. Every so often, a reminder of the good old days would appear. Such was this southbound RoadRailer train, pictured just south of Dunsmuir at Dirigo, California. Led by a solitary SP SD70M, the IBRCI was traversing the Sacramento River Canyon.
Ethanol train NS 6W4 blasts out of a snowy Big Four tunnel with a Union Pacific SD70M showing the way. This train went on duty at 5:25am in Portsmouth, OH and finally made it into Bluefield 11 hours and 55 minutes later. Talk about running short on time.

Two images from my short chase of PCBCY with UP's newest commemorative unit on the point. The foam was thick going after the UP1616 that it was not unlike a UP steam chase with visitors driving 12 hours to get the Abraham Lincoln unit. This deadhead move is taking equipment to Cheyenne for the Big Boy's roundtrip to Denver this weekend, it's only scheduled outing in 2025.
I framed this view of the train descending Blair hill a little differently.

With a healthy train of 24 empties in tow, the Potash Local climbs away from the Book Cliffs that it left at Brendel/Crescent Jct in the distance. The first half of the run down to the potash mine is across open desert like this, so its a wonder why DRGW chose to put the station name of "Arch" on the northern portion of the Cane Creek Sub.

The trouble with CN's Grand Trunk Western painted SD70M-2 is thanks to a lack of anything on the nose it tends to look like a normal CN unit when you whip out the telephoto lens. Case in point is this shot of the unit leading M316 tipping over the grade east of Uncas Alberta on the Wainwright Sub.
