Amid some of Spanish Fork Canyon’s early autumn color, an eastbound Union Pacific Board of Directors special passes through Castilla, Utah, on September 30, 2000. Powering the 15-car passenger train over the grades of Soldier Summit is new EMD SD70M No. 4167 and three E9s.

10 cars are easy work for the two SD70M-2s as they race east along the Susquehanna River. The bridge at Millrift had closed for nearly two months for work and this movement acted as a test to see if the work had been done properly.

K614-25 crosses the Popolopen Creek trestle south of Fort Montgomery with CN SD70M-2 8952 leading. The 8952 was the first of several heritage units created by Canadian National recently, and is also the first to traverse down the River Subdivison.

Union Pacific EMD SD70M No. 5000 leads an eastbound UP freight out of one of the bores of the Hermosa Tunnels between Hermosa and Dale, Wyoming, on September 25, 2003. The eastbound grade is readily apparent here.

Nearing their turning point of Moab UT, a pair of SD70M’s leads the once-weekly local along the icy Colorado River through Bootlegger Canyon.

Seen briefly illuminated by a sliver of sun, Irving's 908 is heading east at Lake View, led by one of their new SD70M-2s. I haven't had much luck getting these, so when I saw this was leading 908, I stuck around after going off duty to grab a shot of them.

Freshly released from the paint shop and ready to lead its first train, New York, Susquehanna & Western's SD70M-2 4064 sits on the point of the next SU-100 ready to depart from Binghamton, New York. This is one of four ex-Norfolk Southern SD70M-2's purchased in 2021, and the first one to receive the railroad's black and yellow paint scheme.

The evening sun casts long shadows as a Union Pacific SD70M leads rock empties across the long wooden trestle that spans the flood plain of the Trinity River on the south side of Dallas, Texas. The train is pulling out of the Martin Marietta facility and must double their train to collect all the empties to head towards the quarry for another load.

Four Canadian National SD70M-2s bring train U78081-19 through the sag in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, hauling 193 loads of ore for the steel mill in Gary, Indiana.

I'm not really one for roster shots, but it was hard to resist getting a shot of the NBSR 6401 sitting at Siberia. The brightly painted SD70M-2 is one of six purchased by Irving to help supplement and replace their aging SD40 fleet.

Built in 1874, the shops and yard at Burnham, located a couple of miles south of downtown Denver, Colorado, were the main shop facilities for Rio Grande. In this later view on December 7, 2015, Union Pacific locomotives are repaired and serviced in the newer Diesel House opened in 1965. Lined up on the north end of Track Nos. 1 to 4 are four locomotive models from Electro-Motive Division and General Electric are represented by EMD SD70M No. 4698, EMD SD70ACe No. 8543, GE AC4400CW-CTE No. 5901 and GE ES44AC No. 7812. UP closed the entire Burnham Shops facility in February 2016. The tracks are gone and these buildings sit as neglected and trashed, empty shells.

The ground thick as thieves with foam the only place to go was up, up on a car for the first run of Lake States fresh pair of SD70M's making their way north.

NYSW SD70M-2 4062, having emerged from the Butler, NJ shops in new paint hours prior, sits in the MC Yard after making its maiden run east in its new appearance. The 4062 is the third of four SD70M-2s to be repainted into the yellowjacket scheme after being purchased from Norfolk Southern.

With Canadian National's Grand Trunk Railroad heritage unit on the point, CSX K614 rolls under the Bort Road bridge just a few minutes after sunset in North East, Pennsylvania where the sky glows with a mix of blues and pinks that complement the heritage scheme.

Fall colours hit peak the last week of September in the Edmonton area, so I've been spending a bunch of time trackside.

The RJ Corman Kentucky Line's empty Alcan aluminum slab train crosses over the Kentucky River as it comes into Frankfort, Kentucky on a bridge that parallels an abandoned road bridge that once carried Broadway Street across the river. Nestled inside the center of CSX's Russell Yard, Progress Rail's Raceland Shops in Raceland, Kentucky have tracks full of relatively modern EMD locomotives that have been cast off from Class 1 Railroads in recent years. The ranks include SD70M's from NS, KCS, and CSX, SD70M-2's, SD60M's, and SD70ACU's from NS, and SD70ACe's from CSX. Sitting out front are a few selected units undergoing various workscopes, including RJCC 2616, an ex-NS SD70M that is now being prepped for delivery to RJ Corman.

CN Z148 drops down the hill at the cowpath, around the corner from Bayview Junction with two UP SD70M's...? The FPON flashbacks to the mid-aughts keep happening in 2022 and I'm all for it.

The Potash Local has reached its namesake at the Intrepid Potash mine (directly behind me). Trains seem pretty big compared to people, but they're nothing when it comes to the scale of landscapes like the red canyons along the Colorado River near Moab.

A CN SD70M-2 leads UP Train MKCAS 14, likely the most-photographed freight train in Missouri that day, passing the Kirkwood Depot on the UP Jefferson City Sub.

Railfans were crowded around the line that morning in anticipation of the train behind this one, a Wimmer Inspection Special with the UP Centennial on the head end, the trip that unbeknownst to us would be its last through St. Louis.

Not for nothing in this case, it was 3 foreign units on the MKCAS, a train that usually drew garden variety UP power most of the time. Those CN SD70M-2's were basically unheard of here back then. This one was only about a year and a half old, but they'd spent a majority of their life so far north of the border in Canada. When they did get into the US, they didn't get off the CN much being pretty new. The Yahoo! Groups were buzzing about it.

I think at least a dozen people shot it at Kirkwood alone besides me. The KCS ACe’s didn’t wander off home rails much at that point either. Hiding in the middle was an NS Dash-9, but who cares? Those will be around forever, right?

On the units maiden run in fresh INRD paint, INRD 7009 and another ex NS SD70M waste no time departing the CN interchange at Newton, IL with a BNSF H1 dash 9 and a handful of freight cars. The train, NTHW 25, will head to Palestine, IL to do some switching before heading back to Hiawatha yard in Jasonville, IN.

A westbound Union Pacific 10-car Engineering Special powered by a super clean SD70M No. 4222 rounds the curve along the Colorado River just west of Bond, Colorado, after a brief thunderstorm came through on July 28, 2020.

NBSR 6402 leads the matched trio of SD70M-2s on 120 into Welsford on a sunny Sunday morning with a cut of loaded wood chips on the headpin, and intermodal bringing up the rear of the 310 axle train. This eastbound was running several hours behind schedule (which seems to happen more often than not lately), thus making this shot possible. This was a one and done as the clouds had their way at Nerepis so I gave up at that point, having happily bagged this.

Three of Suzie Q's four SD70M-2s lead the Cortland Job back from Syracuse at Tully. These M-2s wear the NYSW scheme well and it was a real treat to catch a set of three.

Again, big thanks goes out for all the help. And that goes beyond just this trip but to other railfanning outings and misadventures. I can confidently say I wouldn't even have half of what I've shot without the help of others.

After both SD70M-2s failed on the mountain, the SU-99 crew pulled the train up to Green Pond Road in Newfoundland to wait for the SJ-1 to assist. Luck would have it that NS GP38-2 5212 was assigned to SJ-1, making for a unique consist reminiscent of the 90s.

UP SD70M 3845 is at the head of one of the long lines of stored power at Butler Yard, just outside Milwaukee proper. Myriad types of power currently rest here, from SD60Ms to ES44s, from AC44s to SD70Ms to the odd geep or two- one of these can be seen to the right.

Butler has become one of UP's major centers for motive power storage in the Midwest, as its role in reblocking trains and collecting local traffic has declined in recent years, freeing up space for idled power.

Brand new SD70M-2 (ex NS) NBSR 6401 makes its maiden voyage, powering train 907 as they head through Welsford, New Brunswick on a dreary day. August 5, 2021.

Norfolk Southern 28X detoured over the New York Susquehanna & Western due to a major derailment in East Palestine, OH. The train carried the symbol SU100X while on the NYS&W, and one of their former NS SD70M-2s was added to the head end for the run between Binghamton and North Bergen. 4066 is seen passing a long out-of-service block signal that dates back to the Lehigh & Hudson River ownership of this line. This was also the first time several years that a double stack train operated over the NYS&W.

Four fresh SD70M-2s arrived in Saint John just two days ago to be added to the Irving fleet. One of four would end up leading NBSR 121-01 out of Saint John, that would later tie down once across the border in Bancroft. We picked the train up at Bancroft this morning with the clean 6411 leading the way, and ended up chasing all the way to Brownville Jct. Here, EMR 121 rolls across the Pleasant River within Cautionary Limits in preparation to yard the short train.

One of the many transfer jobs in the STL area pulls out of Lesperance Yard with an SD40-2 / SD70M duo.
