Fall foliage is in full effect in the mountains as NS SD70IAC 1181 grinds around a curve in Northfork, WV with eastbound 18M. Even with 3 units up front and a mid train DPU, the slick rails had this train almost come to a stall
SD70IAC 1210 leads hopper train NS 77A through the S curve in Shawsville on a beautiful spring afternoon.

NS SD70IAC 1210 pops out of Montgomery Tunnel as it leads hopper train 77A westbound on a beautiful spring afternoon in southwest Virginia.

Conrail JR-4 brings an empty 62V down the Waldo Running Track in Jersey City, NJ to run around 4100' of trash empties destined for New Jersey Rail Carriers in Kearny. As luck would have it, a westbound PATH train flies by heading to Newark.
776 cruises south through the Control Point PKIN on the NS Shenandoah Line. The leader, NS 1208, was built 5 months prior to the taking of this shot and still looked somewhat clean.
Shortly after crossing the FL/GA state line near St. George, NS 209 races down the GS&F at track speed with a fairly new (at the time) EMD SD70IAC.
A dirty SD70IAC 1193 is seen leading westbound 393 past the rock cut at Friendship Road in Shawsville, VA on a crisp Spring afternoon
A fresh overnight snow creates a picture perfect setting as NS SD70IAC 1189 rolls through Kumis on the ex Virginian with 744. The train will get a fresh crew in Roanoke before continuing east.
With about 15 minutes left until the sun dips below the horizon, P98 zips west through Dover in some splendid lighting. NS 1230, one of the recently acquired ex EMDX ACes, is the only unit online for this 60+ car train and is putting on a show. This unit has spent well over half of its service life so far on the ECBU, with it first coming out here for use on P29, E32, and P97. It later went north to Roanoke, but then made its way back via the perpetual 350-P98-351 loop, which keeps units captive to here for weeks or even months at a time.
A shiny new (to NS) SD70IAC leads eastbound 392 through Matewan, West Virginia, passing by the former junction of the Mate Creek Branch, now completely ripped out minus the small section of track between the WV 49 crossing and the former switch off of the Main 2.
NS SD70IAC 1209 takes 32N through Vermilion after coming off the ex-NKP (Cleveland District) at GC just west of town. Although NS 1209 is only about a year or two old, it likely has one of the worst sounding horns on the NS system.
NS 1219 (EMD SD70IAC) is seen leading a long and heavy 12G through Newport, PA on a beautiful summer evening.
The SD70IAC's were built in 2019 for NS after the SD70ACe-T4's were built and NS decided to get the IAC's instead, the SD70IAC says "SD70ACe" on the side of the locomotive but inside it has the SD70IAC designation. This version has specialized Individual Axle Control which is what the IAC stands for.
Fog and mist blanket the area as NS 234 thunders east through Wabun, Va with SD70IAC #1212 in the lead.
The last NS SD70IAC on the roster passes a link to the line's heritage as it heads westbound through Swatara, PA with 19G.
With 130+ cars in tow on a rainy October afternoon, the JR-5 begins to make their double in Oak Island with some added horsepower on the head end to assist the regularly assigned 1700/3429 combo. SD70IAC 1218 was built in November of 2019 for Norfolk Southern, and is assisting SD45-2 1700 (built 1972 for the EL) and SD40-2 3429 (built 1966 for KCS). Talk about an age gap.
A new Tier 4 Credit SD70ACe leads Roadrailer train 255 west at Island Grove, IL.

NS 1076 leading NS 15R at Pineville NC on the NS R-Line. I just BARELY beat this train here. As my dad took time to go and see it.
NS likes running these with one engine, as a tradeoff a clean SD70ACe T4 credit unit #1205 (SD70IAC) on I believe an 823 by Yadkin.
NS 954, Norfolk Southern’s OCS heads eastbound past “205” on the NS Dayton District in downtown Dayton, Ohio. This area was once known as Wayne Avenue Junction where several railroads converged, it was quite the railfan hotspot for many decades as many trains passed through here daily. In modern time CSX’s Toledo Subdivision and NS’s Dayton District parallel each other from here to a few miles west of here at MC Cabin where they then go different ways. CSX refers to this area as “Second Street” and NS refers to it as “205”. The empty executive train was headed back to its home base in Altona, Pennsylvania. On this day several rail fans gathered here to shoot the executive train at this once bustling junction. November 15, 2025.
The 256 Roadrailer ducks under the eastbound signal bridge at Hazel Dell as the snow continues to fall. 256 met 297 at Bates, giving me time to head back to Springfield to get this shot.

NS 154 rolls by CP RPM with a decent set of power. On the head end is an AC44C6M with a P5 Horn leading the Lackawanna Heritage Unit and a former N&W SD40-2. The DPU was an SD70IAC.
After 7 hours of waiting and stalling near Abilene, we were finally able to get this monster 16,400ft, 322 car NS 823 at Patrick Henry on the Altavista District. Leading is an SD70IAC along with an ES44AC. Mid DPU’s were a D9W and a new 4400 series C6M. They lost the C6M and was a lead cause of the the train stalling. To my knowledge, this was the longest MTY hopper train to ever come out of Norfolk. The train was split in Roanoke before making the attempt on the Christiansburg grade.

With light fading and the whine of EMDs echoing off the hills, NS 347 passes by the 105.0 milepost on its daily run from Chattanooga, TN to East, Point, GA.

NS 183 comes up the remainder of the hill in Thomasville, AL with a newer SD70IAC leading and an SD79ACC trailing third.
Eastbound Norfolk Southern train 10RB326 is seen coming over the switch at the east end of the siding and approaching 8th street at Chesterton, Indiana on October 26th, 2021, at 11:26 am with BNSF 5751-794-NS 9434-1212 and 118 cars. These types of photos with a good mix of power are my favorite. I was lucky to have good lighting.

BNSF C44-9W #794 was built by GE as ATSF #794 in June of 1997.

NS SD70ACe (SD70IAC) #1212 was built by EMD in April of 2019.
If you asked me who got into me trains/railfanning, I would immediately point to my dad, Steve.
He gave me his old camcorder where I shot my first videos in summer 2017, he helped me create my youtube channel, taught me new angles and so much more. If you see any photos of heritage units on this page, he was most likely with me for it.
I thought I'd give him a moment in the sun as he watches NS 16G with an SD70IAC leader pass Millbury, Ohio on a gorgeous afternoon in June 2020.
A long 148 rolls east into New Berlin behind one of NS' new Tier 4 Credit SD70Ce's. 148 will go into the hole at New Berlin to meet an extra long 181 holding the main.

21T treated us with not only an EMD leader, but it became my first sighting of an SD70IAC variant. Taken in Henrietta, Missouri.
