NS 1832 leads loaded grain train 44M east through Gallitzin, PA as the train prepares to enter the tunnels without a horse on its nose.
NS 1803 roars down the Roanoke District at Ellis Run with another unit and 746 in tow. We got really lucky with the timing of this train, as well as it being a loaded coal train, and an ACC leading, because the sound was absolutely insane.
The stillness of a cloudy Summer morning along the Harrisburg Line comes to an end as NS SD70ACC 1833 hustles Jersey bound 20K through Hummelstown, PA.
NS 16T charges east through Groseclose, Va on the Pulaski District. Up front is one of the two yellow nosed SD70ACC rebuilds.
NS SD70ACC 1848 rolls through China Grove, NC with Enola, PA bound 12R on a wet and soggy January morning
The EMD SD70 was one, if not the last, series of locomotives to be ordered by Conrail. Assembled and painted in mid 1998 at JBS in Altoona, these units wore their future Norfolk Southern numbers upon their release. In late September of 1998, consecutively numbered units 2558 and 2559 are seen bringing a westbound freight through South Fork, PA. A year later, Conrail would be history. The SD70s survived well into Norfolk Southern's tenure, with some being sold a few years back, and others being rebuilt into the SD70ACC model.

A cool, sunny morning in Mansfield, OH finds one of NS's SD70ACC rebuilds on the point of a massive eastbound 12V. The train rolls under the position lights at CP-Mans, headed for a crew change at Oak Street Yard as the shell of the former Westinghouse manufacturing plant looks on.
Loaded gravel train NS 68R rolls down the hill in Shawsville at John Farm with an SD70ACC on point on a sunny July afternoon.

CN L502 crosses the Grand river bridge with a SD70i leader on point. With the number of 70i's being small already, the possibility of them getting rebuilt into the SD70ACC's aren't far off as well.
Exiting The Gooseneck and swinging onto the connector from Old Union Depot Interlocking on the KCT North-South Corridor to St. Louis Ave. on the UP KC Metro Sub is NS train 115 with an SD70ACC rebuild on the point. This train is bound for UP's 18th St. Yard in Kansas City, KS. 12/27/20.
An NS mine run out of Elmore Yard crawls past the old junction at Amigo, West Virginia on the former Virginian Winding Gulf Branch.
Norfolk Southern SD70ACC leads coal train 820 across Knox Creek in Woodman, Kentucky. The train is one mile from completing the trip across the scenic and remote Buchanan Branch. It will turn east at "Ought One" and continue to its destination at Lamberts Point in Norfolk, Virginia.
An all-EMD consist, with 2 ACes up front and a SD70ACC as mid-DPU, handles a southbound freight on the Lurgan Branch just below Shippensburg, PA.
NS 101 crosses the Tennessee River in Bridgeport, Alabama with an SD70ACC leader and a cool crew. I am standing on the parallel, but out of service, former railroad bridge, now a walking bridge.
Fall is going out with a blaze of glory as an eastbound NS intermodal train passes the helpers on a westbound manifest at Cresson, Pennsylvania on October 22, 2020.
NS 11Z flies through Arcadia (well, flying for roanoke district standards) as it passes the N&W CPLs at the control point in the James River Valley.
The SU-100X crew takes the 28X detour eastbound through Baird's Farm in Warwick, NY on the former Lehigh and Hudson River Railway.
From the vantage point of Mountaineer Hwy, NS SD70ACC class unit 1800 is seen leading Chicago bound 217 though the town of Iaeger, WV. After first shooting this train in Shawsville, VA, this would be as far as I would chase him.
Rolling eastbound through Pembroke, Va on the Whitethorne district is loaded coal train NS 820. Leading is the first SD70ACC rebuild, #1800, in its special yellow and gray paint scheme. This is one of a few places you can get an evening eastbound train on this line that isn't backlit.
Train #282 is led by one of NS's newest rebuilds as it passes the old Pegram Shops on the south side of Atlanta, GA on a gloomy fall morning.

From November 1st of 2014, one of my last shots of the day involved a sloooow speed "race" towards Santa Fe Junction between NS Train 267/BNSF Q-KCKSAG and a southbound BNSF grainer for the Ft. Scott Sub. The grain train is out of view in this image, but you can see it here: flic.kr/p/oY95XG
While on the NS, the Roadrailer had been powered by just the trailing SD70, but the no. 2661 was placed on the head end at NS' Avondale Yard in North KC. I know that at the time I was upset about the power situation, but these days, I'd just be happy to photograph ANY of these trains rolling through Santa Fe Junction, regardless of the leader.
Speaking of the power on this train, the SD70M-2 was sold to Progress Rail in March, 2021, and the SD70 (2551) was rebuilt in October, 2019 by Progress Rail in Muncie, IN as SD70ACC no. 1837!
Throwback Thursday! Standard cab SD70 2555 leads NS S20 (an extra NS 820) east on the Whitethorne district in Ironto, Va. I really miss seeing these standard cabs running around. They added variety and looked damn good in my opinion. 2555 is now SD70ACC #1827.

Just after crossing the bridge over the Hudson River in Mechanicville, New York the Berkshire & Eastern's 11R rounds the bend and passes by a tied down 265 and will proceed another half mile before tying their train down as well. Both of these are overhead Norfolk Southern trains that will be handed off to NS at the yard to continue west.

The bright yellow paint of NS SD70ACC #1801, rebuilt by Progress Rail from SD70 2548, overpowers the gloom of a rainy morning in southern Illinois. UP's MDUPB runs south at Gorham, passing the northbound MNLPR and one of the few operating signal bridges left on the Chester sub, while a steady drizzle coats the area. NS handed the train, which originates as the 15E, off to UP at Dupo earlier in the morning.
Thanks to WR for the initial heads up and MM for the in-the-field reports. A couple of cancelled meetings at work and I was able to break away for a day of chasing. Worth it, despite the prospect of making those hours up another day.
Brand new SD70ACC rebuild #1818 leads westbound NS 29G through control point Arthur on the Christiansburg district. This unit used to be standard cab SD70 #2522.
An SD70ACC leads NS train 224 on Main Track 2 of the joint NS Kansas City District-BNSF Brookfield Sub at South Liberty as it gets nearer to NS's Voltz Yard Mixing Center near Birmingham, MO. This train has a decent-size block of Ford frames on the head end followed behind by intermodal and autoracks. With three distinct blocks of traffic on this train, it'll take some time to put everything away at the Mixer. 6/19/22.

NS 1800, one of the 'new' SD70ACC rebuilds, leads NS 123 through the tight confines of Williamstown.
...and a little disappointing. I'm a big fan of a spartan cab EMD, so when the SD70s started the SD70ACC rebuild program I was a bit sad. Engine No. 1807 is fresh out of the shop, and led train 38Q across the Commonwealth earlier this week. They are only this clean once, so I got out to shoot the clean rebuilt leader.
I do love the clean rear end of the non-flared EMDs, so I can't hate these too much, but really, LOVE LIVE THE SPARTAN CAB.
Caterpillar yellow, DC to AC Conversion SD70ACC, NS 1800 is the leader for this evening's NS 202 in Rossville, Tennessee. The train awaits a crew to head east for Pennsylvania.
A crisp Autumn morning finds us trackside along the Christiansburg District's western end as NS SD70ACC class unit 1800 is on the point of Chicago bound 217 heading through Pearisburg, VA.
Norfolk Southern SD70 2511 was passing underneath the iconic Pennsylvania Railroad signals in Whiting with a short train in 2013.
A beautiful morning spent photographing now departed scenes was a good use of time as those classic signals were removed by NS and replaced with newer signals.
The 2511 has also departed the scene as well; it was rebuilt to SD70ACC 1851.
It wasn't that long ago...
135 works it's way westbound through the Old Fort loops with SD70ACC #1801 leading the way on this crystal clear winter afternoon.
Getting NS power out here in KS isn't all that uncommon. Getting a solid set kicks up the rareness a notch, but to get one of the 52 SD70ACC's on the point? Now THAT is a treat!
I first stumbled on this set earlier in the morning, hoping that it'd get put onto UP's MTPNS. Sure enough, while I was at the Topeka Train Show that was IN the train station, I saw it start to pull out of the yard! Eventually, I was able to meet back up with it at Midland, just north of Lawrence.
The 1824 began life as a standard cab NS SD70, that Progress Rail rebuilt in 2019 with a new cab, and AC electronics/traction motors. Full roster info can be found here: www.nsdash9.com/rosters/1800.html

The inaugural run of 12R as a Columbia, SC - Enola, PA train was given a nice send off when NS 1800 & NS 1065 were added to the consist. It's seen passing through rural countryside in Lewis, SC about 50 miles south of Charlotte.

Rather filthy NS SD70ACC 1801 was leading train 24M through Middle River on a dreary morning along the NEC at the 83.6 signals.
It's not often that daylight freight can be seen on this portion of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, but the UPS hotshot must get to Baltimore.
The 1801 was rebuilt by NS in 2018 from SD70 2548 and wears a special yellow and grey paint scheme along with the 1800.
Hopefully this thing sees a power washer sometime soon.
